    So excited about another video in this series! I also love the puzzle-y, deduction type games. I'd never heard of 'Awkward Guests' - that one looks right up my alley! I want to try them alllll - I officially need a bigger apartment for storing all these games.

      Yesss! I LOVE a good thinky game! 🥰👏🏻 I definitely recommend Awkward Guests! It is so good! Ahahaha! This hobby is so bad! You just end up wanting them all! 🤣

      me too!! one problem is I’m better at deduction than my partner, so I absolutely LOVE how in The Search for Planet X you can pick different levels for each player, I put his on easy (so he gets like 12 clues) while I play on hard (just 3 or so clues) and it’s a close game and fun for both of us! it’s such a good idea 🤓

    My top 3 are deck-building, engine building & worker placement, but I'm definitely an omni-gamer so I am always excited to try new ideas and combos of mechanisms.

    • @JennaRoseBeasley

      Those are all amazing ones! And yes! I am very much like that as well! No matter the mechanism I am always willing to try a game at least once. You never know which games you will like because mechanisms can be used in so many different ways. 😊

    thanks for doing this video! hearing ppl saying ‘mechanisms’ all the time when I first got in the hobby really confused me but now I get it lol
    my one fav is probably worker placement and we were so excited to discover the cool way they do it in Raiders of Scythia where you place a worker and get the stuff AND then you take a different worker and get that stuff too 🤯 so fun!
    …but the best is when two are combined in a neat way like Obsession with a mix of worker / hand management / tableau / engine-building (I’m sure that’s a mechanism! lol. but also I’m not sure what is in Obsession, it’s kinda a unicorn) 💗
    I don’t like roll and writes!! I’ve tried, but they just aren’t for me, although Hadrian’s Wall has such rave reviews, I’ll prob try again HA 😜
    other mechanisms we love are dexterity games (like Rhino Hero) and real time, we just got Rush M.D. which I’m excited to try!

      Yesss! I was the same! People always mentioned card drafting, deck building, worker placement and i was so confused! I wanted to help people with this for sure! Worker placement is great! It’s definitely in my top 3 as well! Viticulture, Lost Ruins Of Arnak. Obsession is actually on our wishlist! Hoping to get it soon but it is so hard to find!

    If you haven't already, you should try Hansa Teutonica. It's area control but without any combat. You can oust an opponent's trader from a spot but it actually benefits them. Blocking spots is a big part of the strategy but you have to be clever with it. It's the most Euro game ever so there aren't any dice or cards. The only randomness is in the bonus tiles that are put out throughout the game.

    As far as Dice Games, I recommend 'Roll For The Galaxy' which has a neat dice mechanic/cup and tile management. Note: Not to be confused with 'Race For The Galaxy'. Both are good, but I prefer the dice over cards. And for Worker Placement, I really like 'Energy Empire'(Manhattan Project#2) which has a cool combo building effect that you can do with your workers. Good Gaming to All!!!

      We'll have to check out Energy Empire, never heard of it until today and this is the second time I heard it mentioned. Zee Garcia said it's his favourite worker placement game. I'm intrigued :)

And yeah like Francis said, we have never heard of Energy Empire until today TWICE! Funny. Thanks for watching and commenting! Good gaming to you as well! 😊

    Just to expand, I'm not a fan of calico/azul/sagrada because I'm impatient. I found that the turns in those felt too long (probably due to analysis paralysis) and I'm not a fan of drafting from a shared pool where the options dwindle before your turn and then you're left with dice/tile/patterns that are of no use to you.

    Mind Mgmt is a good deduction / hidden movement type game🙂. My fave game at the moment is Sheepy Time because of the push your luck aspect

      OHHH! Mind MGMT is one we are definitely interested in! We've been looking into it more recently. Its very different to anything have and looks like a fantastic game! It is hard to pick a favorite but I do love pattern building and deck building! Azul is so fun- we have the original & one of the expansions. I want the others. I also love games that combine mechanisms (Everdell being one of my favorites). Somehow we don’t have any Deduction games and I think I would love that! Definitely adding those to my list. What mechanism would you say Takaido is- worker placenta & engine building? That is another one of my favorites. I also love Ticket to Ride (mainly because I can’t beat my husband 99% of the time 😂).

    • @JennaRoseBeasley
      @JennaRoseBeasley  2 года назад +1

      Love those two mechanisms! 🥰👏🏻 I've actually been playing the original Azul on Board Game Arena and I am OBSESSED! I'm definitely going to need more of the Azul games! Francis and I played Everdell last night with the Bellfaire expansion and I definitely recommend! It was amazing. I would say Tokaido is a set collection, time track game maybe? That's a hard one! It definitely leans a lot on the last person always goes first thing which is the "time track" and all the cards are set collection for the most part. AHAHAHA! Francis hates Ticket To Ride so we never get to play it! Makes me so sad. 😭

    Great breakdown of mechanisms. I really enjoy Cartographers. Heroes is worth picking up for sure. Another awesome roll & write that doesn't get talked about a lot is Roland Wright. Excellent game where you're filling in a grid of circles with different colored patterns. And shameless plug ... 😊 If you want to try a pretty unique mechanism that I would consider tile displacement, along with some set collection and action points, check out the game I designed called Fossilis published by Kids Table Board Gaming. They also make a really great worker placement game called Wreck Raiders that is awesome as well.

    • @JennaRoseBeasley

      Thank you so much David! Cartographers is so good! Heros is definitely on my wishlist! So many roll and writes on my wishlist! 😂👏🏻 I'll have to check out Roland Wright! HAHAHA! Love the name. And yesss! Your game is one I would absolutely LOVE to try out! It looks like such a fun one! Kids Table Board Gaming has so many amazing games we would LOVE to try out! Fossilis, Creature Comforts is one I am super excited about, Haunt The House looks fun as well! Now I have to look into Wreck Raiders. Looks great! Thanks!

    Many of my favorite games have worker placement. I'm not particularly in love with the mechanic but maybe it's just a very versatile and simple mechanic that fits many types of games and can be mixed with other mechanics like in Trickerion or Barrage. Any mechanic can be done well and poorly. My favorite game is actually a roll & move game, backgammon, but it's a highly skill based game. I love games that use dice in interesting ways.
    I think that engine building is not one particular mechanic, but more of a style of game. In Photosynthesis you grow trees that generate more and more light that enables you to grow more trees. Wingspan and Terraforming Mars use tableau building etc.
    Calico looks cool. A big part of my life is trying to please my cats.

    • @JennaRoseBeasley
      @JennaRoseBeasley  2 года назад +1

      Yeah I totally agree with what you said about worker placement! Now that I think about it, all the worker placement games we enjoy also have other mechanisms. I just “plays” well with a bunch of other mechanisms I guess. Backgammon is great! And yeah that’s a good way to put it. Engine building is a style of game. 👏🏻 I totally forgot to mention tableau building! We absolutely love Wingspan, Everdell and we do want to get Terraforming Mars!

    Have you played Pan Am? It is a worker placement game with route building, similar to Ticket to Ride, but done in a very different way. It is in my top 10 games.
