Hi there, great bow video; best out there! Could you please advise me on an approximate size for a smaller dog? i.e. Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier etc. Many thanks.
Thanks so much! We don't have any other patterns but as the pieces are rectangles you can reduce the size by trimming down the pieces proportionally, good luck!
Hi there! I have watched this video a few times and out of all the bow ties tutorials I like your idea with the fusing paper but I cannot find this free pattern, can you please provide the dimensions of the two pieces?
Hello Kathleen. You can download the free pattern directly from our website, the link is above in our description. If you don't have a printer: measure out 10" by 6" for piece A and 6" by 2" for piece B!
Hi Sabrina! We only do things for dogs! Have a go playing around with the size of the template, you could always trim it down with some scissors. With the tutorial, you create the shape of the bow by folding so you can test it first then trim down afterwards if it seems too big. Good luck!
We are glad you found this tutorial useful! We decided to use elastic for this tutorial so you could easily add and remove the bow from the collar by slipping it on and off, without the need to permanently sew anything onto the collar. We aren't sure how you would best add a snap for this, but good luck! 😊
Yes this is size medium (cocker spaniel size). If you want to make it smaller the main pattern piece is essentially a rectangle, you can trim it down before you make it up.
As the pieces are basically rectangles, you can just trim down the pieces proportionally, it might take some experimentation to get the size you would like. Good luck!
This tutorial is really easy to follow. Appreciate a good tutorial, so many out there that are hard to follow, too much movement, not properly filmed, etc. Thank you. And for a great cause too. Just a quick question, does one need to use fusing paper? Can we do without and just use the fabric, iron down and sew at the end? Is the purpose of the fusing paper to add a bit of stiffness? Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for your kind words! Yes, you're correct, the fusing/interfacing is used to help the bow tie remain in shape! You could try with a piece of a thicker fabric. Good luck!
Great video and looking forward to trying this! I'm a new sewer though, probably a dumb question, but what is the fusing thing and what is the purpose of it? Can I do it without that? 🤔😅
Not a dumb question at all! The fusing/interfacing is used to help the bow tie remain in shape (it makes the fabric a bit stiffer), however you could try with a piece of a thicker fabric too. You can buy this on Amazon/Ebay etc. Good luck!

I got the same fusing paper and it keeps melting into the ironing board when I put the shiny shin towards the fabric. And it’s making the fabric stick to the board. Any idea why it won’t work? Thanks!
Hi Lexie, sometimes it can depend on the type of fusing, sometimes the glue side can feel quite rough. Do a few tests with some scrap pieces to check which side has the glue on, and use an old scrap piece of cotton or sheeting to protect your iron and your ironing board! Also try turning the heat down on your iron and gradually increasing as necessary. Good luck!
shiny side to fabric...... iron the fabric no the dull side of the paper. in otherwords put the fabric on top and iron the fabric to the paper on the bottom
Hi, the fusing stiffens the fabric and helps the bow tie remain in shape. You can try with a slightly thicker fabric if you don't have any. Hope that helps!
We also have a written tutorial with photos on our website here if it helps: www.thecaninestory.com/post/make-your-own-doggy-bow-tie Good luck! Please tag us on instagram/facebook @thecaninestory we'd absolutely love to see the photos!! :)
Hello! You can find the interfacing on Amazon and Ebay if you search for 'light weight iron on interfacing'! Otherwise a thicker fabric would work as well.
Best to check the instructions on your chosen fabric! Cold hand wash is usually pretty safe for most fabrics, and you should always wash separately as you may have a fabric where the colour may run! Hope that helps :)
I love this and am excited to get started! One issue, the pattern is showing to be bigger than an 8.5x11" piece of copy paper when I go to print it. Is this right? I can shrink to fit but that will alter the size of the pattern. Any suggestions? Thank you!
We are in the UK so we use an A4 sheet to print, however it is absolutely fine to shrink to fit when printing, it doesn't have to be exact at all; that's the beauty of these bow ties! But if you have a larger dog you could also measure directly onto the fabric too! I hope that helps.
I really enjoyed this easy to follow video and I've looked over the link for written instructions, but I don't see anywhere that says what size dog this fits? Can you help me understand what I may be missing? thanks!!
Hello! It really is based on your preference, this tutorial will fit a medium sided dog nicely, because the shapes are rectangular, we'd suggest that you can tweak the pattern yourself. Either by adding on some space around the edges or trimming down. Good luck!
Hi Cassie, We have just made the paper patterns available on our blog post, so if you head to the link in the description you can download them for free.

Hey! Great video but I’m thinking of doing a selection of these to add to my bow business so what elastic size would I do cause you say measure your dogs collar but I will be selling to customers and won’t know there collar size?
Hi there, this tutorial is intended for personal use as a fun way to raise some money for charity, so sorry we can't really give you an answer for your question. We hope you found this tutorial useful and wish you the best of luck in your business 😊
As the bow tie doesn't need to be 'tied' this method would work for an easy quick fix bow tie, for example as part of a uniform or on stage or film! You may just need to alter the size for a human, good luck!
I don’t think you have to but if you don’t or can’t the bows will just be more flimsy. If you don’t have any fusing paper but you have fabric starch that will work you just spray it in and iron it and it should work the same way
You don't HAVE to use the iron on fusing, however it will really help to make the bow tie stiffer and remain in shape better! You can purchase this on Amazon and most fabric stores. If not, you could try with a thicker fabric instead, good luck!
Sorry to hear that Katherine! It can get quite thick for sure. You may need to try with a thimble to protect your fingers and also a thicker more sturdy needle :)
