Piss On Wheels Not really true at all. In Arena you made different attacks depending on where you clicked, in Daggerfall it was hold and swipe, making different attacks depending on mouse movements. In Morrowind there was still SOME planning you could do about attacks, but yes, here is where the click fest began, and it went further with Oblivion. If they had used VATS from Fallout (which actually already is in Skyrim) then they could've allowed really cool dueling sequences of choosing to parry, where to hit etc. And they could've made all schools of magic somewhat viable for combat by letting you Alter(ation) a Destruction spell into a non-lethal cointhrower etc. Also magical duels would work with VATS as well. Seriously, Bethesda has all the possibilities and uses NONE. It's what really pushes them away from being a great game instead of an above average game.
The Arena and Daggerfall combat isn't loved by anyone, or at least not the majority. The RPG aspect and the story is what kept people invested, not the combat. Skyrim tried to be an action RPG, but it didn't work out that well. Long story short, the combat in TES is always going to stay like it is, they won't add vats because a system like that is already in fallout, adding it in to a TES game would be pointless, and it would make the games even easier. The combat mechanics can stay like they are for all i care, the story and RPG elements are the thing that need improvement.
Piss On Wheels Skyrim already has VATS in it, that's where the death cams come from! And they could improve upon it for TES to make combat good, since it's such a central part of the game. I mean, HOW many quests are combat related? Basically all, right? Why not make combat a fun aspect of the game as well then? You cannot mod it to be fun, you can mod it to become harder or easier, but that's just enjoyable to people who crave that stimuli. But making combat visually exciting by making it a duel sequence? One that improves the more skill in your weapon you have? Where if you lose a sequence you risk dying or losing a limb or something? That would be pretty nice combat I'd say. Where magic combat would be fun as it is more about breaking through protection and protecting yourself? I could see mods spawn where they just remove magicians or have all enemies ONLY be magicians just because it could be such a nice type of combat that you'd only want more of that. More enemy mods as well.
Killcam isn't VATS, it's a killcam. VATS is a crit and aim system fallout had even before it became a post nuclear TES game. If the combat isn't fun for you then whatever, it probably isn't the game for you if you find that aspect tedious or annoying.
If you really think Sykirm is the best RPG out of this list, when masterpieces like Dragon Age: Origins, The Witcher games and Dark Souls are on this list, you've got problems.

But it' poor delivery and mediocre quests and voice acting make it less than enjoyable, which is why most people only play as far as getting their Dragon Shouts on multiple playthroughs. And the Dragon Age storyline is longer than the Skyrim main questline, just so you know. To claim otherwise is just wrong

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (PC version only.) belongs in the top ten for sure. No other fantasy rpg brought so many new things to the genre, and the atmospherics were unparalleled. The AI's were some of the best ever created. No other RPG turned the environment into another set of weapons like Dark Messiah did either.
I tried to play it 2 times. A game whose only "strength" is its difficulty is pure bullshit. And it's not as hard. Half of the RPGs in the hardest difficulty are tougher.
Never got to read the books but i did play witcher 1 and 2, i didn't like witcher 1 but witcher 2 was amazing. Great graphics and combat, navigation not so fluidic, there was restriction btw each map.

For fuck's sake, learn what an actual RPG is! Games like Deus Ex HR, Fallout, Borderlands and Skyrim (yes, Skyrim) aren't exactly genuine RPGs. Sure, they have the RPG elements and such, but that doesn't certify them as an RPG in an actual old school gamer's mind. If you ask me, I would only consider the first Mass Effect to be an actual RPG - the rest two are the perfect example of dumbing down an amazing game to cater to the needs of all you 12 year old punks! Legend of Zelda, the Final Fantasy series, The Elders Scrolls (no, not Skyrim), Demon's Soul, Dragon's Dogma, Xenoblade Chronicles are examples of genuine RPGs. Well, generally the opposite is true for most people. Risen was not bad, Risen 2 was a complete turn off for me and Dark Souls was just simply epic. Hundrends of people are watching live gameplay all the time of Dark Souls on Twitch (let alone Dark Souls 2) while nobody is really interested anymore in Risen.

After completing the whole Baldur's Gate and Forgotten Realms series of games, I stopped playing any future RPG's. Thanks for sharing info on Divinity-Original Sin. You sparked my curiosity and I decided to check reviews. You might be right. The game has every element in a RPG that I have been looking for. Every single decision has some form of consequence. For example, You cant just walk in some ones house while the resident is there and awake and take what you want like you could in Baldur's Gate.
And just to add the graphics in Darksiders story and lore really shit all over 90 % of these games... :P War and Death took Word action Rpg to a good new hight.. the traversing prince of Persia styles the puzzles and combat make these games my favourite If u haven't played darksiders 1-2 u missing out nuff said.
+Kartulo yes it was a great game, but can't be compared to Dragon age: Origins and Inquisition...especially the first one was better in practically every single way...many people say that combat was improved drastically from Origins to DA2 but i don't agree...yes it was less Action packed and slower but it felt so much more strategic plus i liked the characters so much more, they felt rich, deep and interesting! In DA2 i even forgot some of my companions names!!! that s awful considering that in Origins i managed to remember names-characteristics even of all the Npcs, quest related or not (Brother Genitivi and Blacksmith Wade are still my favourite!!!)
I think Oblivion should've been bundled in with Skyrim. Oblivion in terms of the amount of content and consistent gameplay in comparison to Skyrim is far better, but I prefer Skyrim just because I played the hell out of Oblivion and it also has better graphics.
Being a huge fan of Dragon Age: Origins and all it's dlc, Dragon Age II was a huge let down for me so bad that I took it back and the guy at gamestop suggested Skyrim and it is the funnest game, second only to Everquest, I have ever played. So thanks Dragon Age II for being so bad. I hope Dragon Age: Inquisition will be epic
I like Skyrim I really do but it does get boring. You get god like within you exploring about 10% of that vast world. Mass Effect series were just so much better. As one would expect from Bioware. Their games have always been the best for me. They all have great stories and memorable characters.

I like DAO the most and I've had at least 20+ run throughs of that game no other game except maybe D2 and Arcanum have i played that much ... I liked DA2, but it has no replay appeal because you play through every map 100 times on the first play through with all the reusing of areas. Reckoning would be my favorite but the storylines got repetitive and the game was way to easy even on the highest difficulty setting and I still never died or even struggled against a single boss well maybe the maid of windemere... but thats because I stopped paying attention because everything else was easy. Skyrim isn't my rpg I disliked how I got to be the top dog every where I went and like nothing changed when i did, the story was to open for me...
Probably because the series has been consistently dumbed down, the main questline was pretty lackluster compared to the older titles, and a few too many of the side quests were simple fetch quests. A great RPG if you are a more casual player though.

Skyrim is the most overrated game I've played in a long time. Don't get me wrong, it was fun to play and a good game. But it isn't even close to being the best. Personally I don't even think its the best Elder Scrolls game.
Of course you can't say it's the best. But you can't say worst, too. You know what, the series like TES are exceptional. Because every game brings a new story, new gameplay mechanics, almost everythings new. As a result, it's possible not to experience similar fun between games. For example I miss that old thing when you have no compass to show you the exact location of long-lost temple, but you find your way by asking around and finding clues. But also, I enjoy new graphics, new mechanics etc. Best thing about TES (and also Fallout games) is the moddability. They released mod making tools, which enables you to customize most simple things like changing item statistics, or more complicated things like build your own game with a new map, new quests, new items etc... If you're not a console peasant, search for mods of the games you play. Different and mostly a better experience than vanilla games.

Legend of Zelda, the Final Fantasy series, The Elders Scrolls (no, not Skyrim), Demon's Soul, Dragon's Dogma, Xenoblade Chronicles are examples of genuine RPGs.
Edit: A few honorable mentions go to Dragon Age, The Witcher 2 and Ni No Kuni (but this game had a lot of hand holding).

I've played both, completed both, and had by far more fun with 5 minutes of Risen than with all Dark Souls game.
Well, generally the opposite is true for most people. Risen was not bad, Risen 2 was a complete turn off for me and Dark Souls was just simply epic. Hundrends of people are watching live gameplay all the time of Dark Souls on Twitch (let alone Dark Souls 2) while nobody is really interested anymore in Risen.

You might be right. The game has every element in a RPG that I have been looking for. Every single decision has some form of consequence. For example, You cant just walk in some ones house while the resident is there and awake and take what you want like you could in Baldur's Gate.

+Kartulo yes it was a great game, but can't be compared to Dragon age: Origins and Inquisition...especially the first one was better in practically every single way...many people say that combat was improved drastically from Origins to DA2 but i don't agree...yes it was less Action packed and slower but it felt so much more strategic
plus i liked the characters so much more, they felt rich, deep and interesting!
In DA2 i even forgot some of my companions names!!! that s awful considering that in Origins i managed to remember names-characteristics even of all the Npcs, quest related or not (Brother Genitivi and Blacksmith Wade are still my favourite!!!)

I think Oblivion should've been bundled in with Skyrim. Oblivion in terms of the amount of content and consistent gameplay in comparison to Skyrim is far better, but I prefer Skyrim just because I played the hell out of Oblivion and it also has better graphics.

Being a huge fan of Dragon Age: Origins and all it's dlc, Dragon Age II was a huge let down for me so bad that I took it back and the guy at gamestop suggested Skyrim and it is the funnest game, second only to Everquest, I have ever played. So thanks Dragon Age II for being so bad. I hope Dragon Age: Inquisition will be epic

I like Skyrim I really do but it does get boring. You get god like within you exploring about 10% of that vast world. Mass Effect series were just so much better. As one would expect from Bioware. Their games have always been the best for me. They all have great stories and memorable characters.

I like DAO the most and I've had at least 20+ run throughs of that game no other game except maybe D2 and Arcanum have i played that much ... I liked DA2, but it has no replay appeal because you play through every map 100 times on the first play through with all the reusing of areas. Reckoning would be my favorite but the storylines got repetitive and the game was way to easy even on the highest difficulty setting and I still never died or even struggled against a single boss well maybe the maid of windemere... but thats because I stopped paying attention because everything else was easy.
Skyrim isn't my rpg I disliked how I got to be the top dog every where I went and like nothing changed when i did, the story was to open for me...

Probably because the series has been consistently dumbed down, the main questline was pretty lackluster compared to the older titles, and a few too many of the side quests were simple fetch quests.

Skyrim is the most overrated game I've played in a long time. Don't get me wrong, it was fun to play and a good game. But it isn't even close to being the best. Personally I don't even think its the best Elder Scrolls game.
Of course you can't say it's the best. But you can't say worst, too. You know what, the series like TES are exceptional. Because every game brings a new story, new gameplay mechanics, almost everythings new. As a result, it's possible not to experience similar fun between games. For example I miss that old thing when you have no compass to show you the exact location of long-lost temple, but you find your way by asking around and finding clues. But also, I enjoy new graphics, new mechanics etc.
Best thing about TES (and also Fallout games) is the moddability. They released mod making tools, which enables you to customize most simple things like changing item statistics, or more complicated things like build your own game with a new map, new quests, new items etc...
If you're not a console peasant, search for mods of the games you play. Different and mostly a better experience than vanilla games.
