  • Charles Malki, Biologist & Plant Expert from ivorganics.com/ discussing a grafting technique that can be used in the Spring, Summer & Fall (winter can also work for evergreen plants & trees). In this video, Charles Malki grafts a Hojiblanca onto a Manzanillo olive tree. The ultimate goal is to have three varieties of olives growing onto a single rootstock; (1) Manzanillo, (2) Hojiblanca, and (3) #3 Coming Soon! Any suggestions for good green table olives?

    Love your videos they are super informative. You inspired me to start growing the ice cream banana tree as well as 2 other varieties. Do you have any suggestions for growing mangos and apples in Florida? I moved from NH and I miss fresh apples and would love to grow them here. I heard pink lady grows in central FL but I'm skeptical.

    I have a lychee tree that i planted 3 years ago. It was given to me by someone who grew it from seed. It was relatively large at the time he gave it to me, possibly 4 years old. I planted it in the ground and it has grown much since. After doing research and learning about lychees grown from seed take forever to flower i have come to the conclusion that i either need to remove it now and waste no more time with it or top work it. Would an approach graft work with a hat racked tree? What are your suggestions? Thank you for your time.

    So I have a question that I’m having a hard time finding the answer to. I live in Illinois in zone five where it gets over 100 with 98 percent humidity.
    I’ve been buying two year old potted apple trees mostly red delicious. I cut all the leaves off and tried grafting five diff kinds of apple to each branch. The apple tree is still in a two gallon pot. Are my grafts no taking because it’s still in a pot? Does the tree have to be planted in ground for any of theses grafts to take? I’m having a hard time any info would be a great help. I have a grafting scissors and wax with tape. Tried many diff kinds of diff type of grafts technique spent over 500.00 and have had no luck.

    Will this technique work with Lemon trees. I live in Pennsylvania and I have a 3 year old lemon tree that I grew from seed to be a recipient tree. I have a Meyer's Lemon tree and a Key Lime tree all in containers. I want to graft both onto the recipient tree. All the trees will come inside for the winter in the next few weeks. Will it work and is it too late in the season to attempt the grafts.

    Charles, I have a question. I have a couple of lychee saplings grown from seeds. I know that seed planted trees take much longer to fruit. Can I graft off of a lychee sapling? Or will it also be inhibited because its not actually from a fruit bearing tree? TIA.

    Your title says ‘Grafting Fruit Trees Any Time Of Year.’ Does this mean if I have scion wood left in my refrigerator I can graft in the heat of July, although it is recommend to perform grafting in early spring just before the buds of the rootstock tree are ready to open and the sap is flowing? Look forward to hearing from you.

    are there any different fruit trees that can be grafted together...like peach and pear...or walnut and pecan...I know some nightshade like tomato and potato will work. thanks

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  7 лет назад +5

      Hello Williamlattin,
      Yes, tomato and potato can be grafted successfully. When selecting plants and trees to graft, they should be in the same genus classification. For example, stone fruits are in the genus "prunus" and the following fruit trees can be grafted onto one another in this genus: cherries, nectarines, almonds, peaches, plums & apricots! Pears should be grafted with other pear varieties. Apples with other apple varieties. Etc..... I hope this helps! Keep me posted on your grafting projects! :-)

    Will this technique work if I only have the scion wood? I am attempting to graft a nectarine tree thats in a different property, into the nectarine tree that's in the property I currently live in- both in the Bay area. Its end of March and both trees are awake from dormancy. What's the best method at this time of the year? Thank you so much, I learn a lot from your videos.

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  6 лет назад +2

      Hello AV,
      There are grafting techniques that can be used just about any time of year.... however, different techniques work best at specific times of year. The cleft graft (my 2nd favorite grafting method) is best toward the end of winter, a just before the trees break dormancy. Here is a video that demonstrates that technique: ruclips.net/video/ORmiejNDNOw/видео.html If you must start working on your grafting goal sooner than later, and you have the extra time & effort, and since the trees are established in areas where this technique of approach grafting (my #1 favorite grafting method) is not feasible.... You can begin by air-laying the desired nectarine now, and within 6-8 weeks have an air-layered plant that you can then graft along-side the other variety of nectarine (the approach graft) and within 6-10 weeks have accomplished your grafting goals! Here are some other helpful videos on these points: ruclips.net/video/rOjf7LliPmM/видео.html ruclips.net/video/rXZR-IboE_o/видео.html (specifically look at 5:08 in this video to see the fruit tree in a cup used to accomplish the approach graft). Let me know if you have any other questions. Charles :-)

    • @smilekills
      @smilekills 6 лет назад

      Thank you so much. Appreciate your response. I am all set to go try it out tomorrow. Meanwhile, I also purchased a snow queen nectarine (very low chill hours) to try the approach grafting technique with the nectarine on my other property. I will try the air layering as well to maximize my chances.

    • @smilekills
      @smilekills 6 лет назад

      A question on air layering : Do I have to get past the cambium layer to prevent the tree from healing? Do I need to get it to the wood to promote rooting, or should I stop at cambium? I guess my question is which layer promotes root growth? Any tips on how I can maximize my success with this approach. Your videos has been very helpful. Thank you.

    • @desmondou
      @desmondou 5 лет назад

    When you peel the bark on scion do you remove just the bark or bark plus wood?

    • @KefirGrain
      @KefirGrain 4 года назад

      Mikey A you cut till you hit wood, and remove the bark till you reach the wood, do not remove any wood but cut till you reach the wood leaving a clean layer of undamaged wood. Does that make sense?

      Hello Abigail,
      Thank you! :-) And the quality of our videos always get better.... Regarding the graft, yes, only separate the graft after it heals which takes at least 6 weeks and up to 3 months. I have some follow up video that will get release soon, so be sure to subscribe if you have not already. Thank you! Charles :)

      Thanks, looking forward to that. I've not seen this technique done anywhere b4...I think using not only a "live" but "living" scion reduces the chances of a failed graft greatly..yes?

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  7 лет назад +2

      Hello Abigail Brewster,
      For sure!!! Using a live graft increases your chance of success to something close 99.9%. In fact, you can see the healed wound before you sever the live graft from the container. Looking forward to showing you the signs to look for before severing the the living graft. Wishing you a Happy New Year! :)

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  7 лет назад +1

      Good observation Mikey A!
      I would go with the approach graft that has both ends growing, preferred over the scion grafted onto the pruned off rootstock. Keep me posted on your success! What tree(s) will you be grafting?
      Charles

    • @mikeya9370
      @mikeya9370 7 лет назад +1

      Mango tree, I think this method might work better because we have similar situation where the rootstock is much larger than the scion.

    • @mikeya9370
      @mikeya9370 7 лет назад +1

      I will not be able to cut halfway into such a large rootstock so i think I can just take out a piece of bark the same diameter as my scion like above.

    Thanks for another awesome video. I tried some approach grafting which I think they have took but after cutting the donor, the graft lose all leaves and then come back later anew. Why it's doing it so? I did have this issue with a passiflora that thought was dead and now again with a white sapote. Could it be that the graft union area isn't large enough because it didn't fully seal and so the plant has trouble getting enough energy?

    Does the parent plant need to be attached in order for this to work?

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic  8 лет назад +1

      Hello SM72086,
      Both plants have cambium layers (the green tissues below the bark level) in contact for at least 6-10 weeks; during which time the vascular parts (xylem & phloem) become intertwined. Once the plants systems merge, the potted plant can be severed below the graft line. I will be doing a continuation of this video in the upcoming weeks.... just waiting for more time for the graft to heal. Be sure to subscribe, if you have not already! :)
