The neat thing is that Sylvari players get a bit of custom plot (Some NPCs are wary of you, you hear Mordremoth in your head, stuff like that.) due to the plot of HoT.

    • @ZWillemz

I was lucky enough to chose a sylvari as my first character and experience the whole story (core & expansions) with him before any other character
I was wondering wether the commanders of other races would feel mordremoths influence and terror but when i knew that its only sylvari commanders it blew my mind
I didnt know anything about HoT and didnt play season 2 (i dont have it yet lol) but even without context i was still amazed by HoT
      Its just that good.
Tried to play as a human in HoT but it hits different when youre sylvari

I should also mention the amazing voice actor for the male sylvari whos voice lines and tone gave me the feeling of rush and danger, i was like "oh this is serious!"

One thing I love about ANet, is when they decide to do something, they go all in. When the game released, initially the format planned was to not do expansions, just frequent episodes like the living world series. So when they changed their mind, they made an absolute epic expansion that was so different from anything anyone had ever seen in a game.
"There will never be mounts in the game" they were pretty adamant about that, and we all came to pretty much accept it. Waypoints were faster anyway, once you uncovered them. But there were a fair number who kept begging for them. They finally give in and it's "Fine, we'll put mounts in, but they're going to be integral to the exploration we didn't want them to take away from" Then proceed to make their collection of mounts that undeniably are industry leaders, and coined the phrase "the joy of movement"
    They define the word "developers"

You didn't even mention my favorite part of the expanison! The map wide meta events are a fair step up from most things in the core game. Pushing out from little outposts, getting to know the struggling survivors and helping them to get a footing against overwhelming odds in a hostile environment, and all of that in the open world and culminating in boss fights that get over 50 players together just feels awesome. And since it's all max level content with great rewards, it's all still super relevant, so people still run these metas all the time.

It's important to note the Living World episodes are free during their initial release (or during the "Return to..." event last year, when they offered each episode again once per week.) You only need to pay if you happened to miss them when they were free, and you can use in-game currency to trade for them as well. I think that's fair for a game that doesn't run on a subscription and has such an unintrusive cash shop, though it is a bit bothersome that they don't include the relevant LW seasons when you purchase their respective expansions. I can definitely understand some disappointment and confusion when a player gets to the expansion and realizes they're missing a chunk of the story. I'm glad they provide a proper "complete edition" in the Steam store, at least.
Also, kudos for using my two favorite songs in the entire game, Tarir and Spicy Tarir. 😁

What a strange take. Your GW2 achievements can be shown off through titles, which are not purchaseable. There are also plenty of skins that can be earned through achievements, or rare infusion cosmetic effect drops. Plus I feel the need to repeat: you can trade in-game currency for anything in the cash shop. It's never necessary to spend money there. I'm not sure where on earth you're getting the idea that the average player is "probably spending 200-500 a year." If people are spending that much, it's entirely because they choose to, which is certainly ideal to feeling forced to.

I've been playing for years but sometimes I forget how great the map/ environment/ building designs are after the story moves away from certain areas. HOT was an great map and the change in dialogue delivery made the experience feel a lot more involved and dynamic. The HOT maps can be a headache to navigate while avoiding pocket raptor and smoke scale ambushes. The four stages I HATE in videogames, mostly because designers do not know how to deal with the emptiness or repetitive scenery (mostly on old games) is "snow, desert, aquatic and jungle". HoT and PoF is the proof of something done fantastic in design, and snow maps in GW2 are one of my favorite maps here. The art direction of GW2 is just outstanding, and HoT map design are the best in MMOs, yeah, a pain to traverse, but crazy good to explore and discover.

Side Note: The design of the new zones reminds me a lot of the Ancient Forest from Monster Hunter World, where players also had a hard time traversing it. I feel it adds a sense of immersion since in reality it would be pretty hard making your way around these types of environments.

Ancient Forest is actually a good point. That is also really hard to get around in, but at least in MHW you don't need to wait for certain times of day to get to an area or be forced to beat a certain monster to craft a rope that gets you into another part of the area.
When you get first thrown into the Ancient Forest proper, you can just go anywhere, spend as much time as you want, the enemies on the way aren't a big problem and the small traversal things are a fun bonus to find, rather than a requirement (the pterodactyls that get you high into the tree, for example).

Copying an idea is just taking it wholesale and applying it in a way where you can clearly see where it came from.
Mistlock Instabilities = stealing the idea
Dragon flight = copying the skyscale and the griffon with a few added dashes to make up for the weakneses ofd the WoW geography.

Really great review, your points are well thought out and explained - especially the living world seasons leaving gaps in the history: I felt the exact same way when I started HoT the first time.
Also the introduction to the raptors was spot on!

As a 10 year vet who hated (still do) Hot maps, it's really nice to see a fresh perspective on them. Think you nailed it when it comes to why they are frustrating for some. VB especially so.

Great video! A good combination of entertaining descriptions and humor, plus excellent video editing skills that show off the beauty of GW2's game environment artwork. I've been playing for almost 10 years and still have many achievements to look forward to completing, so I never tire of this great game. Sure, it's not perfect, and all games have their pros and cons, but for me, this is the best game experience I've ever encountered, and I hope that your videos will encourage more players to give GW2 a try and experience the fun that you have found with this game. As for the Living World episodes being walled off within the Gem Store, it should be noted that you can easily earn enough "In Game Gold" to pay for the Living World chapters, by converting gold to gems. Also, players who were active in the game during the initial release of all Living World chapters, received them for FREE, and again earlier this year, Arenanet offered all chapters of the Living World free to unlock, just by logging into the game once every couple weeks, over a several month period, with one chapter unlocked approx. every couple weeks. We don't know if these "Free" unlocks will happen again, but new players can also obtain every Living World season and chapter unlocked in a bundle purchase when they purchase the GW2 expansions on Steam, as one big package of all content (all 3 expansions and 10 years of Living World seasons) for the one time purchase price of $100. That may seem a steep price to pay for a game in which you can play all of the base game and the Living World Season 1 content for free, but when you step back and look at all of the content and new maps you are getting for that $100, including the 3 expansions, it's pennies per hour of enjoyment that you are paying, and IMHO, a great value for the money spent.
P.S. You've progressed very quickly through the game. I was surprised to see you getting through the core game story and into HoT so fast, and then blown away that you appear to be crafting Ascended weapons and playing in Fractals and Raids so soon after discovering Guild Wars 2, yet you don't seem to be rushing through content without appreciating the beauty of this game. Congratz, and I've subscribed and look forward to Gizmo's further adventures.

Pocket Raptors and Shadowscales are scarier than the big dinos. Been fun watching your streams when I can catch them. If you want even more Heart of Thorns fun, try going through it as a Sylvari... Mordy will mess with your head. Auric Basin meta is probably still my favorite to run since you can do any of the 4 sides at the end to spice it up. Path of Fire/Living World Season 3 really opens up the game though with all the mounts. You're in for some good times when you continue.

Thank you so much for appreciating the first expansion like that! While it was my absolute favorite time in the game when HoT launched, I feel like it really didn't get the appreciation it deserved.
I was low-key addicted to participating in the meta events, the "conquerous" character of which I've already enjoyed in the Silverwastes, and exploring all depths of the maps, where you literally could get lost. The mobs were challenging and still feel dangerous today, also loved the Elite-Specs and immersive implementation of the gliding.
