I cannot thank you enough for this primer on African interior design styles. I've been looking at pictures and videos of interiors for months now as I try to put together a space from scratch and the proliferation of minimalist Scandi / Japandi spaces in white / beige / grey is driving me mad 😅 I know nothing about design and various design styles, I only knew from the beginning I wanted a space that is colourful, lived-in, warm and cosy like a grandmother's house, and I knew which local art and objects I would incorporate into the space. God only knows why I didn't think to search for African interiors from the get-go. *COLOUR* (especially the yellow / ochres / terracotta / orange), patterns, texture, curves galore... I'm so happy this showed up in my recommendations ❤

Texture, color, geometry, and hints of luxury typify what I think of as African core design elements. There's an ancient elegance in African design, it's holds tension in a very interesting way. I'm fascinated by the intricate geometric patterns that show up across African cultures over and over again for millenia and yet somehow looks very futuristic. I know many Africans hated the Black Panther movie but I thought it did a wonderful job showcasing how ancient African symbols, geometric patterns look futuristic and ancient all at once. That's very fascinating to me.

Agreed. It might not have been documented but its alive today which makes it futuristic and yet ancient. Talking of patterns ,think of the ruins of the shona people -the great zimbabwe wall ,it got this crocodile design which symbolizes fertility for women and we see the same pattern design for their recent airport tower building. Fascinating YEAH!
