Well for vsnetwork they choose whatever seems best among moves that do stab damage, some coverage and maybe something like a stat boost move. If they played competitively with their entire teams set up then it would just be their two strategies fighting not really the pokemon. Although they could go for using Smogon to give each pokemon in the team some type of role with the pokemon that are in the tournament as the main contender. Either way the way they battle is just see whether my Pokemon can defeat your pokemon quickly, if not I switch out.
