It's astounding how difficult it was to find good information on such a simple topic. Every time I looked at a different source online I came to a different conclusion on whether I was over or under pronating. Finally seeing that it's the entire motion of the foot rather than just a still picture of your ankle was massively helpful. Thanks!
so far the most simple yet decisively informative video i have ever watched - i have had the opportunity to several runners (HM distance to ultra running category) to help me understand the basics of pronation and choice of shoes - no one ever came this close to help me understand as conveniently and simply as SimplySweat just did. Thank you so very much.
If you are a midfoot or heel striker, you can overpronate on landing, not on toe-off. The wet test isn't very accurate because it does not factor in the impact - many overpronators like me have a normal arch, but when the impact of landing from running is factored in, they are overpronators. The wet test as described does tell you your foot type only,, it does not tell you if you overpronate.
I have flat feet and pronate especially my left foot. I have always bought New Balance or Brooks stability or Motion Control. I then discovered Hoka running shoes. I tried several types at a running store. I found the neutral shoe called the Clifton worked for me best. I simply remove the sockliner and insert a Superfeet insert. I have had excellent luck with this shoe vs other shoes from Brooks and NB. Before I forget. This is an excellent informative video.
Thanks! That was great! I think it would also be helpful to go into the differences between all those different kinds of shoes. I think it would be helpful to show what the heels look like for each type and why, a rear view of the shoe would be helpful, e.g., for stability shoes that tries to prevent overpronation, the inner heel is higher/thicker than the outer heel to keep the foot from over-pronating. At least, that's what I think is happening as I look at all these stability shoes.
A question about testing the pronation type. When stepping on the cartoon paper, shall we stand or be seated? In my case when I am seated its overpronation and when standing its severe overpronation
I just did the wet test and outlined it with a sharpie. Looks like I could be neutral to underpronation. My current shoes have worn soles on the outside, which is suppose to be for underpronation. But my physical therapist from a few years back said I have moderate to severe overpronation. I can also feel my foot rolling inward. My PT recommended Asics GT series, which what he had at the time. I bought the Asics GT 2150s which are for overpronation and my feet and legs felt great with them. I'd still but then but Asics discontinued them. I'm still so confused about the pronation stuff. 🤔
I just bought the Asics Gel Nimbus 17 last night online. I wish I had seen this video before I made the purchase. I always thought that striking the outer heal was the indication of under-pronation. According to this vid, the heel usually strikes the outer heel in each case of pronation. I'm going to see if I can switch to the Kayano 17. Thanks for this great vid!
I don't know about overpronaters, I'm an underpronater and the best shoes for that: Asics Nimbus Brooks Ghost Saucony Echelon Going to try out some Echelons tomorrow.
+MerkinMuffly Thanks for listing some of the underpronater shoes that worked for you! I'm trying to figure out which shoes to buy for myself (underpronater as well).
+Mufasa Mostasa Also check out Brooks Glycerin 13, New Balance 1080v5, Nike Vomero 10... go to underpronation dot org for more list. I also ordered Hoka One one Clifton and Hoka One one Bondi 4 for max cushion. I have asics kayano 21 and it feels good like my nimbus but better. So far I only tested the Hoka Bondi 4 and it feels so nice like walking on clouds. :) I'm still waiting for the rest of the shoes to get here and plus some insoles (samurai and powerstep). I'm a heavy runner and I just tried brooks beast and it helps when I'm already sore from running for couple of days (2x30mins treadmill). Good luck!
+Cqp Kyo2 Wow, thank you! I actually visited a local store and I ended up ordering the Asics Gel-Cumulus 17. So I'm waiting to try those out. The ones I wanted to try were the Mizuno Wave Prophecy 4, but man, are they expensive!!! I'm in desperate need of new shoes - especially ones designed to aid my feet running on cement. Please let me know how your new shoes feel! :)
+Cqp Kyo2 by the way, I just googled the Hoka one shoes, seems like they carry a lot of comfort. I read somewhere about them, but never actually did any research on the brand
+Mufasa Mostasa The cumulus was also listed there so i hope that works for you. i have the mizuno prophecy and wave creation in my list but i'm broke now haha so maybe in the future. The price looks tempting though. Check out amazon for mizuno prophecy 4 you can get it for $80 + free shipping for prime. Change the color selection to black and green otherwise they are selling the red color for $89. I like the max cushion so i think hoka one one clifton & bondi will really help my feet and legs... design wise- it looks huge with all that cushion. :) New balance came out with 1080v6 fresh foam that looks a bit like hoka perhaps that will have nice cushion as well. I let you know if the insoles helps.
Absolutely superb. I found your knowledge of the foot type and pronation to be excellent. Your video examples were helpful. I think it would be additionally beneficial if you show some x-ray type of views. Overall, very well done.
Excuse me but I have a big question ! The running store is in the u.k I wanna buy these shoes but the I think I can't because I live in California and plus your guys money is different can i still get it or no ? I looked up online and the first thing it said was simply sweat sports store and then it said u.k
Does this apply to walking the same way? I have been researching the market for shoes that support over pronation and sever cases. I am flat footed as well so it is really hard to find shoes that help both factors. I just purchased a pair of ASICS Gel Kayano 26. They felt good when I tried them on in a store but bought my pair online. I also have some Adidas Ultra Boost 2019. They help with flat feet but not the over pronation. Feel very comfy a great shoe if your on concrete all day.
Where would I find the scientific evidence for a static examination test (wet foot test) being able to predict foot function (dynamic as in running). What is the limit for pronation, as in, ' ... stopping the foot pronating too far"?
I can't tell how my feet land. But I looked at the soles of my shoes and they are all worn out on the outside (laterally) from heal to toe. Does that mean I "under probate"???!! Ps: I wear custom made insole orthotics. Thanks.
First should train all the sales staff at all the retail stores . I bought one today at SPORTS CHEK in canada and the guy had no idea about arches or pronation and so do i . I bought the most expensive hoping will work for me but after looking at the video i am confused.
BTW - I went to your website using my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, there was no sorting/filtering by foot type or pronation. VERY Disappointing. Please update if you have more information.
Where are the divisions between these different types of 'pronation'? If you supply your references it would be appreciated. What research is your talk based on? Where did you get this information?
I have pronation when no stand straight up barefooted but have supination when I walk with shoes on what can I do it sole can I buy? I also have flat feet

That's by far the best explanation of pronation I've ever seen. And I love the chart at the end too. Thanks!
Agreed
+Kevin Hutchinson Exactly my thoughts
totally agreed! best one i have seen so far!
From pictures I thought I was OP all these years, but apparently I'm a UP. Great video!
learned so much from this one video than all the googling readups
Thank you for the no-nonsense illustration of pronation. You made it easy to understand and to self-test. Very informative indeed.
Added this video to my 'watch later' just for reference. This is the best video explaining pronation!

Finally a great explanation and illustration of which shoe that´s best for you depending on your pronation.
Short yet full of information. Thank you for this video

Where is the website? Fantastic content
RunRepeat (alternative website)
Lol the domain is for sale these days, that’s a shame. I was looking forward to seeing how they categorized shoes.
I used to have fallen arches, I wore insoles and now my arch is built up to high does that mean I have a natural high arch?

The North Face yellow shoes - could some1 tell me what model they were?
Ahhh awesome explanation. Thank You
Where would I find the scientific evidence for a static examination test (wet foot test) being able to predict foot function (dynamic as in running).
What is the limit for pronation, as in, ' ... stopping the foot pronating too far"?
The site is down ...where you guys gone to ?
Is the store no longer active?
I thought that what you're calling under pronation was actually known as supination.
I can't tell how my feet land. But I looked at the soles of my shoes and they are all worn out on the outside (laterally) from heal to toe. Does that mean I "under probate"???!!

I am suffering from over pronation so What is your opinion on Asics gel kayano 28 ?
First should train all the sales staff at all the retail stores . I bought one today at SPORTS CHEK in canada and the guy had no idea about arches or pronation and so do i . I bought the most expensive hoping will work for me but after looking at the video i am confused.
