  • www.mod-tv.com Watch our exclusive behind the scenes film on photographer Anna Bauer and the making of her fashion book "BACKSTAGE". Anna Bauer's Backstage is a comprehensive portrait of the protagonists of fashion in the twenty-first century's first decade: not just the designers but the entire cast of PR agents, photographers, make-up artists, art directors, editors and, of course, the models.
    New York based German born photographer Anna Bauer spent four years shooting the world's top fashion personalities backstage at the shows in Paris, Milan, London and New York using a heavy large-format camera and black-and-white Polaroid. The result is her new portrait book, ANNA BAUER BACKSTAGE published by Angelika Books, designed by Fabien Baron with an introduction by Tim Blanks. We went behind the scenes with Anna Bauer at Spring 2012 fashion week in Paris, and captured her in action shooting portraits of top models Miranda Kerr and Karmen Pedearu. Featuring interviews with Tim Blanks, Fabien Baron, photographers Sean Cunningham, Bardot and Valentino brand Ambassador Carlos Souza.

    ABOUT the BOOK:
    Anna Bauer's Backstage is a comprehensive portrait of the protagonists of fashion in the twenty-first century's first decade: not just the designers but the entire cast of PR agents, photographers, make-up artists, art directors, editors and, of course, the models.
    Photographing at shows in Paris, Milan, London and New York, using a large-format camera and black-and-white Polaroid, Bauer decided to portray the diversity of the talent at work behind the scenes. "I got totally addicted to the backstage," Bauer says in the preface to this volume. "I wanted to show how much is involved."
    Elegantly designed by Fabien Baron, Backstage is divided into eight themed sections: "The Designers," which includes portraits of Alber Elbaz, Alexander McQueen, Christopher Bailey, Diane von Furstenberg, Dries Van Noten, Francisco Costa, Haider Ackermann, Jean Paul Gaultier, Joseph Altuzarra, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, Phoebe Philo, Riccardo Tisci, Rick Owens, Stella McCartney, Tom Ford and Zac Posen;
    "The Girls," which includes models such as Agyness Deyn, Kate Moss, Lara Stone and Lily Cole;"The Press," with art directors, editors and publishers such as Anna Wintour, Jefferson Hack, Dennis Freedman and Glenn O'Brien;
    "The Front Row," which features celebrities Kanye West, Milla Jovovich, Lily Allen, The Kills, Juliette Lewis, Marilyn Minter and Cate Blanchett;
    "The Beauty Squad," with make-up artists, stylists and casting directors such as such as Dick Page, François Nars, Guido Palau, James Kaliardos, Orlando Pita and Tom Pecheux;
    "The Money," which includes CEOs Giancarlo Giammetti, Michael Burke, Gianni Castiglioni and Sidney Toledano;
    "Behind the Scenes," with publicists and producers such as Alexandre de Betak, Carlos Souza, Caroline Lebar, Ed Filipowski and Pierre Rougier; and finally,
    "The Photographers," which includes portraits of Patrick Demarchelier, Mario Testino, Juergen Teller, Martin Parr and Patrick McMullan among others.

    I see some of the other photographers are using some sort of taped together large square framed "ringlight" that needs someone to hold up by hand, what's up with that? Never seen that before I would think it is best to use a regular ringlight that fits on the camera lens. If you are trying to achieve that look of no shadow on the face thing.

    Does anyone know what set up she uses? I’m pretty sure it’s a Toyo, but I can’t seem to find 4x5 Polaroid film or film holders anywhere ??

      John Smith yes it’s a Toyo, probably a 45 AX. eBay has Polaroid film (be expected to pay quite a bit for it!), then you’ll need a 545 holder (which are quite cheap). I didn’t hear what type Polaroid film she was using (probably type 54). She probably had an amount saved up in storage. I have about 60 sheets, Type 59, 53 and Polacolor 100, and as much as this stuff costs, it makes you scared to shoot it...

      @@zonev3119 Thank you! I did a bit of research shortly after I posted this and found out that Catlabs of JP still sells polaroid holders and all types of large format polaroid sheets :)

      John Smith No problem! I just checked out Catlabs, that’s a good price for a 545 holder that’s been tested, but they don’t have any film currently for it. They have the 8x10 stuff, and that FP-100c 4x5 they have uses a totally different Polaroid film back (it’s the 550).

    I wanted to shoot on Polaroid 4x5 film because of this, but once I saw the price of one pack I decided against it. Holy crap is it expensive. O.O

      Because they don't make it anymore (and didn't when you posted) so scalpers

    If the whole of the fashion industry disappeared overnight - a rapture, if you will - no one would actually care; civilisation would carry on. No one would die. Everyone would eat. I just can't imagine being that useless in the grand scheme of things.
