RAPPERS TODAY ALWAYS SAY THEY SELL OUT STADIUMS 🏟, METALLICA SAID THATS NICE 👍 WE SOLD OUT A COUNTRY. 😂😂🇺🇸🇺🇸
Metallica said “cute”
To be fair AC/DC was the main event.
Metallica, Black crows and Pantera was the worm up.
@@Tommysimonsen 👍👍
@@Tommysimonsen AC/DC may have been a bigger mainstream name and may have been the highlighted name on the concert pamphlet. But anyone who’s a fan of all those bands knows that you showed up for Metallica
@@WafleEnterprises This was 1991, that may be true today.
estimated 1.6 million. they stopped counting after 500k and just let anyone who showed up enter
Standing in line for the bathroom, like😖😖😖
Anyone who showed up entered... Sandman.
1.6 million spectators is an overinflated number
@@roverwaters3875 No it's not, but you all must know that it was a FREE concert, organized by WB (Warner Bros.), to "celebrate" the end of the USSR.
It was around 1 million. It keeps getting bigger by the year. Lol. Even Metallica members say that. It was a free concert too.
I was a 16yo boy in the soviet bloc at that time, it was a historic moment. There's no other drug like freedom.
I love watching reactions to this, and how most of the people reacting don't even understand the significance of what they're watching at the moment. :D
I wasn’t there but I remember the time very well. I remember crying when the Berlin Wall came down. My Grandmother (from Poland) explained it very well. My ancestors fought to get to the US and I’m so thankful. I don’t take my freedom for granted and am very aware of those that sacrificed so much to give it to us.
I wish you a wonderful life of freedom bro
This was the first concert in Russia after the fall of the wall.
The fall of the Iron Curtain. People were "allowed" to rock, at last.
i believe this was before the curtain fell. . the soviet union didnt fall till a few months later. .
@@Blizzard0fHope The curtain fell Nov. of 89. This happened in 91
@@StaciaAmnaber the berlin wall fell in 89. . which reunited east and west germany. . it didnt do much else to the rest of the soviet union. . the soviet union collapsed in december of 91. . 89 was the wall dec 91 was the curtain
Watch for the American flag at about 1:48; still my favorite part of the video.
Them folks was feeling FREEDOM!
I can’t imagine what it was like for them but they look like they rocked out like pros!!!
And Metallica was giving it to them.
Kinda makes sold out stadiums look like child’s play.
Before fire code enforcement, for sure :-)
Over a million and a half crazed Russians there- that must be the largest rock crowd ever. Metallica isn’t my favorite- too heavy of a sound for me- but I have mad respect for them- a unique, iconic sound
People came from all over the world for this concert. Hence all the different countries flags waving in the crowd..... This was a Monsters of Rock concert. People came not only for the music, but to celebrate the end of the "Cold War" and with it the threat of a Nuclear War.... Hope others will see this to understand how significant this was and see that, as bad as things can get in life.... there's always hope for better days! Peace.....
not only metalica ac dc and a few others, forget name now
You know what else is that two of the dudes were immigrants and they were probably 25 years old. Didn't even look fazed
its recorded as the 3rd largest concert in history.
Just think. That was before major internet and social media. Think about they got that big all around the world. Crazy.
Metallica is timeless. I mean how many other bands can actually say that they held a concert so big that their security was the literal Soviet Army. This concert is on record as the 3rd largest concert in recorded history.
On a Soviet military base. With helicopter fly-bys to help cool down the 1.6million people in attendance.
Biz.....1.6 Millon people. Enjoy! 🤘😎🔥🔥🔥🔥That is the Russian army out there....jumping with everyone else. Music my friend- in Moscow....they showed us all how they love our Rock n Roll. 🤘
Yea, they draw a pretty good crowd. With a little practice, I think they might make it big.
LOL
LOL
😂
🤣🤣
Someday maybe. But James has to work on those bangs. Hehehe
James Hetfield is just one of the best front men ever ! Creeping Death at the same venue is just as good if not maybe a tad better !!!!
I'm with you girl one of my favorite
its not just a tad better its alot better
@@richardlucas3952 I was being nice ? Haha because yes i totally AGREE !!!!!!
Agreed. Between "Creeping Death" and "Harvester Of Sorrow"....it's always a tough one to choose. I keep flip-flopping on which is my favorite from that show. "Creeping Death" has the most incredible energy (even to this day).....but "Harvester" grinds SO perfectly.
He is one of the best people currenrly alive, imo.
I asked the bass player what was the one moment he thought about most when looking back at his time with Metallica and he said this show. The crazy thing is he didn't even know if they got paid or not.
I don't think Jason really cared. He loved playing. Getting paid was just a good perk.
@@HvyMetal4Ever They got paid, it was a huge tour with many country's, and a lot of expenses.
This was one of the Monsters of Rock shows...Supposedly the bands played for free, but I suppose it's according to whoever you're talking to. At the time MTV, and VH1, reported that they played for free (they used to have Monsters of Rock shows in major cities all over the world, including the US...and, the shows ran for a number of years). But, touring is damn near dead thanks to the internet. Bands don't have to tour to support their material anymore...
Europe, South America, and Asia still got it goin on...but, not here in the U.S. You're lucky to catch two or three really good shows in a year. I used to be able to do that in a week back in the 80's and 90's within easy driving distance.
Jason Newsted said many things such as "When he joined the band, the members sent the bill to Newsted room. He never fitted in and if you see how he got treated James couldn't accept Newsted as it was a hard time to accept that Cliff Burton passed on. What Metallica said about Cliff it was so tragic and it shouldn't have happened. Hearing about Kirk if he had a shortest straw he wouldn't have been alive but Cliff would be. I guess that's why they created "Shortest Straw." James said himself that he doesn't let anyone get close to him. A lot of therapy work went with the band and when Robert came in, it mustn't have been easy with such hostility. However, looking now, he's been with the band over 16 years.
I don't think Metallica cared about money, I think they cared about just getting drunk to try and live through the dark times that they suffered. One asks should they have continued after Cliff died? Well, if they didn't continue, what would be worse? Getting off the horse and never riding? Or getting back on the horse and pulling in crowds from all over, yes Metallica played drunk, yes Metallica have been highly unpopular with songs and albums but they still draw a huge crowd in so are they unpopular as it's said? Or are the media just trying to destroy Metallica? A true fan of whoever it maybe of an artist stays regardless to show respect, loyalty. I particular love the latest album, I am a true fan of Metallica. I understand the pain what goes in through losing a loved one, James struggled immensely as did the rest of Metallica. I guess to even play a song that had Cliff Burton playing the bass and they play live with a different bass player sure must bring sorrow for the crew. I wouldn't know how they handle it, I have their most utter respect for this all as it must be really hard to say the least.
This was AC/DC show they did It for free
There was 1.5-1.6 million people and around 52-54 people died in the crowd and it’s when they where touring the black album back in 1991
You're right - no venue. Reportedly 1.5 million people!
That was right after the iron
fist fell. Those people had never
seen a real rock concert before.
The government had been afraid
the music would make the people
go crazy! Hence all the military
& helicopters. Kudos to Metallica
for playing for these people
for free! One hell of a concert!!
Thats not entirely true. Ozzy performed in Moscow in 1989.
The Iron Curtain had fallen and Time/Warner wanted to tap the new audience. So they put on a free show with the top rock/metal bands at the time. It was at a Russian air base, with Russian military doing the security. They weren't quite sure how to handle the rowdy crowd.
So they killed people numbering in the 30s-40s. Gotta love leftovers from communism.
not yet. You have to remember this is 1 month after the August Putsch, the failed revolt against the Bolsheviks. They were still in power in Moscow but had lost most of the Bloc countries by September. I think only Belarus was still part of the USSR
Just remember, this concert, they opened for the GREAT AC/DC here at Moscow
Backstage , "Is there many in tonight" "Yes"
AC DC was there that day too!
Great reaction! There was 1.6 million people at that show in Moscow.
You have to understand that this was after the fall of the Iron Curtain with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Russians were exposed to western music and culture after being closed off for decades.
Thats 1.6 million people. A point that changed the world.
1.6 million people. Sold 500,000 tickets then more just kept coming so they opened the gates. It held at an empty airfield in Moscow. 56 people died. The army was the “security”. The crowd was the horizon.
One thing people gotta remember, this concert, they opened for AC/DC
1.6 million people showed up that day! 1.6!!!
A good place for you to start the Metallica rabbit hole would be the studio version of "Master of Puppets." Then maybe "The Four Horseman."
They were celebrating the end of communism. Kinda.
this was the end. the Bolsheviks still had power at this moment but the Berlin Wall had fallen and they had lost their empire but they had just put down a revolt the month before this show. There is an interview with a state official that said "after watching all these Russian people going crazy for an American rock band we kind of new we were going to have to transition to a new system". i'm sorry it was one of the revolutionaries from August. that revolt was to return the Soviet Union
Pantera-Domination from the same concert, brother. Epic! Great reaction.
Metallica concerts are a trip. The first time I went to one, the people in the lawn were throwing thing on fire, having mosh pits and this was before Metallica even played. The energy from their concerts are intense. 🤘🏻
The piece of music is from the showdown scene from the " The Good The Bad The Ugly.
As I mentioned previously the opening music is from "The Good The Bad and The Ugly" AC/DC was the headliner.
Just imagine looking out at that sea of freshly liberated Russian people, most of whom are hearing your music for the first time. Goosebumps.
This is from the 1991 Monsters of Rock tour in Moscow. The lineup included AC/DC, Metallica, Motley Crue and The Black Crowes. As several others have mentioned, they estimated 1.6 million people attended 😳 crazy!!!! Russia might hate America, but they love our Metal bands!!! 😜😂😂😂 The studio version of this is basically the same as what you just heard, minus the crowd ... and maybe 1/10th slower ... Metallica definitely has a couple that I think you would like: Nothing Else Matters, The Unforgiven, Sad But True. Just to name a few ... for fun Whiskey in the Jar ... they also did a cover of Bob Seger’s Turn the Page. They are a little heavier than you are use to 😂😂😂 but you opened the door 🤷♀️🤣😂 Great review 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🎸🤘
Have fun fam 💞
Don`t think Motley Crue was there, But Pantera was.
@@Tommysimonsen yep, MC was in the 1991 lineup, but did not make it to Moscow 🤷♀️ my bad!!! I know better too 🤦♀️ I thought I searched enough, but clearly I didn’t ... thanks for catching that!!! 🎸🤘
Makes Woodstock look like a carnival
You’ve heard this everywhere. Football games, pro and college, movies, everywhere.
Biz check out "Fade to black"
Over a million people.
This second time metal was there. This was monster of rock.
The first time they allowed a metal concert there was in 1989
It took place at an Air Base , explains helicopter flying over plus all the military personnel.
I recommend Harvester of Sorrow for the same show Moscow 91. It is the best live version of that song.
It was recorded that 1.6 million showed... YES
Hope you enjoy Metallica. I dig your channel brother. 💪😎👊
Metallica shows= unreal! Seen 'em 12× since '89; hope to see all future shows here in Alabama & next door neighbor Georgia. I'm James' age; if they're able to play, I can rock! 🤘🎸 Best concert band? Headliners AC⚡DC!
FUCK YEAHHHH!!! just imagine being there!!
Saw them from the club days 84ish....
This was a free concert, the helicopter you pointed out was to cool the crowd.
1.6million ppl 37 died.
It was at a airport.
The show was monsters of rock, it could be heard 20miles away.
So crazy...it was like one and a half million people...so awesome
1.6 million people!!👍👍👍
This was during the fall of the Iron curtain & the end of USSR's communist regime over eastern Europe. Prior to this time, most of western music was outlawed. So for many of these people, it was their first time hearing this type of music other than what they could get on the black market or heard on underground radio. Metallica was part of this music festival called Monsters of Rock. Pantera & AC/DC were part of it also. It took place in September of that year at Tushino Airfield, a former site of Soviet military exercises. I got this concert on DVD for my husband for his last b-day... Another great song by Metallica (same concert) is "Creeping Death" - crazy high energy & Kirk's guitar skills are beyond human. Many other RUclipsrs have reacted to that one. It's a must see! I was living in Germany (US Army base- Karlsruhe) at the time of this concert. I think I actually heard all those Russians chanting "DIE! DIE! DIE!" with James Hetfield during the brief interlude of Creeping Death - LOL!
1.6 Million people....and this is only 3rd on the all time list of crowds at an open air concert. #1 is Rod Stewart at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a crowd of 3.5 Million in 1994. #2 was Jean Michel Jarre in 1997 also in Russia, like that Metallica show, with 3.5 Million.
From this same concert...you need to check out their song "Creeping Death" it is soooo much better than this one. And it has crowd interaction. Imagine 1.6 million people all yelling together.
They are amazing I saw one concert and will never forget!
It's unbelievable to have that many people sharing that experience all at the same time. Amazing
Creeping Death and Harvester of sorrow live in Moscow 1991 are better than studio in my opinion.
My favorite of theirs is Until It Sleeps, One, and this one. Thanks.
Pantera played at the same concert. Check it out. The song is Domination.
1.6 million straight from Moscow. They previously bootlegged their music. Not permitted in their country. You see how well bootlegging worked for them. You couldn't keep them away from the concert.
We just got back to the car! The concert was dope! 💪🏻👍🏻
nice reaction. ye nailed it, if memory serves it was 2 yrs after the berlin wall came down, was on an army base with soldiers taking tickets and doing the security. ppl just kept appearing until the soldiers just gave up taking tickets. lots of folk injured and quite a few deaths. 1.6 normal russians having their 1st taste of freedom, going bonkers. this was history, not just a concert.
Gives me chills!!!!
They are playing at a Military Base in Moscow.
1.6 million people were there!!
80% of the people there don't understand the words ... but it feel so GOOD 🙂🙂🙂
AC/DC headlined/finished this concert and it was goated
I love METALLICA
1.6 million people when they stopped counting. Some estimates were at least 2 million in attendance from all around the world. This was soon after the Berlin wall came down, as did the cold war.
There are concerts in South America by Iron Maiden from years back with background video showing concert goers arriving at a concert site after days or weeks of walking to get there on time. Never ceases to amaze me what power love of music has.
That's what it was in Moscow that's the first time when the Wall come down and 90 Metallica was the first band that went over there and played and it was over a million people they said they watch this concert
Had to subscribe after this one, check out creeping death and harvester of sorrow from this same concert.. this was at tushino air field
This show is so old Lars still had hair LOL!
I love that tiny, brooding, moody Danish.😂
Thank you for not pausing the video! 👍
Can you imagine the adrenaline being on that stage and seeing all of those people rocking to what your playing 😎
The world showed up. I like that.
Let's hear some 80's Slayer; I feel like some Spirit in Black.
Let's figure it out my friend.
You should've let the video play right into there next set... (Creeping Death) 🤘
Here's one you might like....the group is Sevendust and the song is "Denial"
Often times a studio version is the best because its hard to get great sound and you only get 1 shot at the live version. But, when people request a live version its usually because they nailed it live and it lets you see how they are in real life. Like this video. This video is pretty much proof that Metallica once owned the entire planet. Lol I think the phrase "nailed it" was invented at this concert. Creeping Death from the same concert is also amazing.
Great video
Over a million people there
There were 1.6 MILLION here.It was the first time I believe, the outside world was allowed in.Freedom and liberation for these citizens! Military even joined in.Could you even imagine their happiness?
I just read about a French performer. Who holds the record for outdoor concert attendance. He played in front of a crowd of 3.5 million people!!!!!!!!
That is beyond impressive 👏.
It was at an airfield. I think a military base. My favorite from this show is Metallica creeping death and pantera played as well. Their performance of domination was lit
That concert is one of those historic moments you don’t think about. Soviet Union had just fallen. I think this was the first concert after that
German wall came down separating the east from the west.
@@whathandleUtalkabt Russia wasnt free till the USSR had fallen. This concert was probably their first time being able to hear the western society music
check out "Unforgiven" by metallica as well as "Trapped Under Ice"...amazing
When you got loyal fans lik that you know your top and elite
1.6 million - a veritable sea of people from all walks. This was EPIC history. The only American music folks in Russia had heard until this was bootlegged tapes.
In a video from this concert, you see soldiers beating attendees who were said to be moshing. The soldiers didn't know what was happening, so they started hitting them with clubs. James said that at one point, the soldiers loosened up and started rocking out too. I think the stage was set up at an air field or something
Know other artist could of done this in Moscow 1991..U guys are legends!!
I don't think many others could have done it like the ones that listed
Hey it's estimated almost over a million people watching this concert does the first time since the wall went down in 89 or 90 when this is the first band that went over there to play
1,6 millon of close friends
This is awesome!
1.6 million people at least showed up. They are the most amazing band in the world!!
When I realized this concert is older than my oldest kid:🧑🏾🦳
Love playing this song on my Kirk Hammett 602 signature guitar (lead guitarist)
💯 Hell Yeah! Metallica! 🔥
Metal Heads united! 🤘😎
Hit it, boss!
The helicopters flying so low over the crowd was actually for health & safety. It was to stop everyone over heating.
Just goes to show music unites all!
Check out Metallica - One, The Jammin version would be better than original video as it has a lot of movie clips tied in and can really distract the first time view.
Estimated attendance was 1.6 million.
Metallica has been using that opening music, "The Ecstasy of Gold," since about 1984.......
The helicopters were used to keep the crowd from overheating. Those towers in the crowd are speaker towers. I'm getting old, lol
This was a historic concert that marks the end of the Cold War between the US and Russia with the fall of the USSR and communism. It was held at an abandoned air field in Moscow with an estimated 1.6 million attendance for them to get their first taste of freedom and heavy metal bands live!! Epic show!!!
