In Florence today, the temperature is 35ºC (real-feel 39ºC), add to which we have a river and are in a valley that traps the centuries of damp and humidity (and mould). And then there are the mosquitoes …! Italians go away to the mountains or to the seaside for a month in the summer (everybody in Italy gets a five-week fully paid holiday every year), and most shops are closed all month.
In Greece the 15th is a national religious holiday, the day of the mother of Christ. Everything (except tourist stuff) is closed and everyone centers their vacations around then too! Una fatsa una ratsa ❤
Great video Claire. Very good advice. You sound like I used to sound more or less around 4 decades ago when I was fairly new here after escaping London. I told my clients in England and my friends but nobody listened……!!!!!!!! They just flooded here in August despite my warnings. I hope your listeners and viewers take your wise advice…… great episode Claire…..!
I’m glad my sister is there now, in August. She’s very much enjoying Lake Como. I’ve always wanted to experience Ferragosto. I know, I know, the crowds, the heat, the business owners that have closed up shop because they themselves have gone on holiday. Thank you for the tips.
I just got back from Rome (July 25-Aug 1) and it was HOT! We were staying at a villa for a wedding and thank god they had 2 pools... aside from the heat it was an amazing trip!
Well, the best place to stay in August is anywhere along the alps, not the beaches! You can even wear jackets up there and see never-ending panoramas! 😎 Along the alps you can even find beautiful lakes like Lago Maggiore, Lario and lake of Garda, go to the highest European mountain and many, many more things. It's not really true that you are gonna die from heat. 🙄
Love the video Claire so true all my Italian friends have air conditioning thank god and It is so important to stay hydrated and yes the dreaded mozzies 😂
In general, I advise people to visit Italy before Memorial Day or after Labor Day, when it is less impacted by overcrowding. My favorite time to visit during the Christmas Holidays, or Easter Week.
Wonderful tips! I hope to be moving to Italy early 2025. Heading to the Alpine regions first. I lived in Florida for 26 years so heat is something I would like to avoid to some extent. Never got used to it as I am from the Northeast US.
Italy has become so much hotter in the last 25 years we used to live in Malta ,now Italy is as hot as north Africa and we live in an area called The Casentino which is in Tuscany but high up in the hills ,a forested area.
Aside from the heat, all Italians go on holiday in August. If you are looking for a seaside holiday, it is better to go in June or September in Southern Italy (the weather is more uncertain in the North). To visit the most beautiful cities, it is better to come in spring after Easter or late summer-early autumn.
Thank you so much for the Information. I have a question for you, My wife and I plan to take our kids for our first ever vacation in Italy, we plan to come in the end of August as you recommended, What city would you say is the best to visit or cities if we plan to stay there for about 9 days? Thank you so much.
The very end of August is best after the Ferragosto celebrations. It depends on what you want from your time here. If you want to be in an iconic part of South Italy close to the Amalfi - Salerno is great and also because it's so well connected to other parts of Italy too. There's also Puglia and then Sicily which is vast as an island so there are lots of places that you can see.
i am italian and all the young italians go abroad during the high season (july and august), sardinia is still popular but the main destinations in italy are mostly tourists and older italian locals who are working/ retired. the cost of renting in italy is too much and in the south it is too hot/ crowded to be enjoyable during these times. some towns are now over 50% air bnbs
What have your experiences been like in Italy in August? Let me know!
Incredibly hot, and all the Italians are on on vacation!
"Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun" 😂😂😂
Ahhaha yes!
I went to the south of Italy during September, years ago.
It was amazing.
It’s a lovely month to visit!

The heat and humidity is a challenging combination for sure!
local italians go to the beach then mid day go for lunch or a sleep and return late afternoon so just be sensible !

Ah how lovely!

I am coming the last week of August, but I am staying 6 weeks. So I expect I will get a bit of everything. Thanks for your insights!
Yes you will and I think you’ll also notice a real difference too

If you want to experience it then you must absolutely visit - but the difference is that you’ll have your eyes open and know what to expect!
Great info as usual Many Thanks 🎉❤❤
Thank you!
Deserved but have to admit being a Londoner helps as one myself.
Keep up the great work you do Respect ❤️👍

Yesss!
I was in Liguria in October and it was almost too hot for me! So yes, August is absolutely out!
Yes indeed!
In general, I advise people to visit Italy before Memorial Day or after Labor Day, when it is less impacted by overcrowding. My favorite time to visit during the Christmas Holidays, or Easter Week.
Yes - Easter can be a little rainy sometimes but Christmas is also a lovely time here too!

Yes Italy feels different in August for sure
Just got back from Taormina Sicily, never ever going in August again. Even at night it was sweltering. Also way too many people!
Point well made.
Which is why tourists from everywhere are here now
Yes….
I live in Italy have air con...everywhere we gi has aircon.
Yes it’s important-the majority of places have aircon but not everywhere does particularly older buildings
I’m coming at beginning of September will it be better then ?
Yes it's better
Yes it will be better!
Forse tu non farai mai niente, sei del sud ? Perché al centro e al nord eccome se si lavora e le ferie estive sono attese e sudate
Let's say from half of July to half August.
Yes and for some until the end of August
Only ever experienced 40C + in Italy. 🥵
It’s a struggle….
July is just as bad if not worse.
Yes it can be but August kind of tops it in my experience anyway
Per il caldo luglio è anche peggio
Si
Yes, indeed the heat saps one's energy. And the ants, they are all over the place! And the humidity, not nice! This video is really realistic
Indeed!
In Italy , it's always July and August , nothing ever gets done.
Yes it all slows down
too hot for me
Just a bit 🤣
Sei proprio una bella donna 😘
Ah grazie!
