Gotcha, do a solo playthrough with Ralts. I'm definitely not getting the signals mixed up here. Actually one of the most impressive playthroughs I've seen to date. It says something when a Pokemon dominates Yellow or Crystal, that's not free obviously, but it really sends a message when a Pokemon just dominates Emerald. Exploud has basically one difficult fight at the very end with Steven, and I'd even go as far to say that fight is less difficult for Exploud than a ton of other Pokemon. Just an absolutely dominant performance throughout.
Congrats to Exploud on having a great playthrough. It's going to be blazing through the game once you do the replay. The Tate and Liza fight is making me wonder how well Lunatone and Solrock will do on their playthroughs. Lunatone gets STAB on its Psychic moves, but doesn't get much else besides Ice Beam, Solrock has a decent attack stat but is stuck with low accuracy Rock type moves until Return and Earthquake, and their defensive typing is kinda cruddy for both of them. Maybe low D, high E tier?
@Dick_Faggotson I don't see Levitate being that big of a factor aside from Steven tbh and most of his mons that have Earthquake also have a different move that's supereffective against them. I could see them getting through most of the story campaign fine, but Juan, the E4, Champion, and Steven are all bad matchups for them. Lunatone will probably steamroll the early campaign with STAB Psychic type moves & Base 95 SpAtk, Solrock seems like more of a struggle throughout.
Idk if u’ll read this but, I’ve spent my day tired and doing nothing after another week of work, and that comment about having some rest actually lifted my mood :) ty :)
I love that Exploud evolves from Whismur. A Pokémon that looks relatively harmless and very cute, then to Loudred a Pokémon that still retains some charm to it, then Exploud a Pokémon that looks absolutely fearsome.
Holy mother of god, Exploud is cracked! As a kid I loved Whismur's design, but it was so weak that it always became dead weight. Loudred is no better, as it doesn't really get that stronger and it evolves super late. But seeing Exploud tear through the game fills me with joy!
That was an absolutely excellent playthrough with Exploud! Don't be so hard on yourself over the Steven Stone fight, a middling normal type pokemon is never going to be instinctive to use in such a fight, and the wide variety of coverage moves probably makes it more difficult to use there when you only have 4 move slots. I'm confident you'll be able to optimise Exploud and get a reset-free playthrough with a little luck in the future, especially when you're not having to make those calls on the fly and with the time pressure of being on the clock.
Hi Scott! Nice work with Exploud even with some iteration of strategy at the end. Always nice to see good design go hand-in-hand with consistent performance. In previous video you discussed utilization of Abra for Teleport during Emerald playthroughs. If you ever (or rather when you) proceed to optimized playthroughs in Emerald, you should change Abra’s catch rate to 100%. The encounter comes up at the very beginning of a playthrough. so in optimal play one would simply start over if Abra would run away. This is just to save some real time. Thanks for the content!
Wouldn’t that seem a bit cheap? If anything, having to grind a long time on Route 116 could open the floodgates for an Abra encounter, thus giving more of an advantage to Pokémon that can’t get past Roxanne quickly.
@@skeetermania3202 Not the encounter rate but catch rate, so that if Abra is seen it would be caught for Teleport. Since Teleport is quite significant time save, in optimized playthrough you honestly would not proceed without one. Just like you would restart the run if you had too many encounters in Mount Moon in Gen1, especially since restarting before Roxxane would be only about 10 minutes’ worth of playtime with 4x speed (so this change would just save time for Scott to produce videos). Of course the encounter rate is then a random factor, since exp and ev gains would be messed up of Abra would be boosted, but I believe this would be something to consider.
I still have to think about Abra. Right now my thoughts are: it feels like too much manipulation to force it for all playthroughs. Feels like grinding for Roxanne should come with this benefit.
Really nice to see Exploud doing pretty well! I definitely can't wait to see what the vs video will be for Exploud. Maybe it's Exploud vs Slaking since they're both the 2-Stage evolution Normal mons.
Awesome run. Exploud performed like you expect legendaries to, haha. 23:30, Brick Break would actually be pointless here. If Return has STAB, like it does for Exploud, it has 153 BP (102 * 1.5), Brick Break would be 150 (75 * 2) due to no STAB, so it'd actually be weaker, surprisingly!
i've watched all your content since the beginning so i know youre not as familiar with emerald as u are yellow version but exploud is highly underrated, but its basically gen 3's tauros 💪🏾💯
Seeing you comment on how early Slaking learns Hyper Beam I am now interested in how it would do backported to Yellow... That said this is a nice run so far and as a fellow Exploud enjoyer I'm glad it's doing so well!
Wobbuffet fact: In Mt Pyre are actually 2 Wobbuffet Trainer, one having a male wobbuffet and the other a female the Wobbuffet Trainer beeing mentioned might have been a minor highlight
I'm not surprised Exploud did pretty well. Its stats aren't very well distributed for competitive play, where pokemon want to be either extremely fast or extremely bulky, and generally like specializing in one attacking stat. However, for solo challenges, Exploud is still fast enough to outspeed everything when it has a level advantage and stat experience, and its special movepool/mixed attacking stats really help it get by walls that normal moves would struggle with. It also gets setup, has a medium slow growth rate, and gets STAB return, all of which are amazing traits for a solo run. Its bulk also isn't amazing, but its generally good enough to take a couple of neutral moves, which is really all it has to fear since strong fighting types are pretty rare in gen 3. Essentially, Exploud may not look like a monster, but it has just enough in every stat to take advantage of its amazing movepool, so it kinda just doesn't struggle with anything the game has to offer. Its just fast enough, just strong enough, and just bulky enough to kinda beat everything.
Exploud was actually kind of decent in competitive play. It was really good for a bit when it got Boomburst then defined some of the lower tiers. It had a niche in OU a few gens, although its speed and lack of bulk has made it kind of mediocre at best now
While that's true, I feel like scrappy boomburst was the biggest reason Exploud found any sort of competitive success, which it doesn't have in gen 3. A base 150 power STAB normal type move with no drawbacks that can hit ghosts is insane, but its safe to say the move/ability carried Exploud in competitive, not its stats. I think its still fair to say that Exploud's stats and gen 3 movepool are much better suited for a solo run than they are for competitive.
Yeah my boy Exploud! He was one of my mains in that gen including aipom, ursuring, zangoose, slaking and wailord I didn't care about types I just picked my favorite designs I never used anybody else unless the game forced you to that was the last gen I played
I think I actually like that Sound-based moves are a mechanic separate from typing, with abilities and special moves granting immunities, resistances, type-shifts, and pseudo-STAB to sound-based moves.
One of my favorite random Pokémon. Great design and move pool, good enough stats and ability to be useable. Kind of in an Altaria tier of fun gen three Pokémon
I have never really understood why so many people want a sound type. Sound is already a subtype of attack, which allows them to hit through substitutes. I think having them as a subtype lets you do more as far as coverage and potential future abilities and attacks goes. Idk, i just don't think the type chart needs to be anymore complicated, maybe im an old man lol. Love the videos as always, keep it up with all the thoughts Scott 👍
Regarding the health reminder before battles, maybe putting a health bar into the overlay will effectively act as a reminder, seeing a health bar or even just a little box that indicates health levels (green, yellow, red etc). I imagine a health bar would be useful in more ways than one so might actually be worth implementing. Food for thought 😊
RE: play mistakes, I think most people understand that, since you are playing fast, this is going it happen. As a viewer, the only really frustrating (but understandable) parts are when you repeat a strategy that is obviously not working after a couple attempts. That is something you have vastly improved on over the past couple years, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Also, this was a very interesting result. I had lumped the Whismur line in with all the other middling early game normal types and never even tried it out.
I’m really focusing on being decisive and not letting stubbornness set in. It can be tricky sometimes because the first battle can be misleading and then I think it’s possible but after 2-3 attempts to start to realize that the first fight was good luck and I need to re-evaluate the plan entirely. Thanks for the comment btw, it’s encouraging to know that you’ve noticed growth!
Hariyama is so good. It's so bulky. It has seemingly middling defenses, but a colossal HP stat of 144 and 120 attack. It gets access to bulk up, earthquake, rock tomb, and vital throw. It's fluctuating growth rate. It's going to be such a monster.
Fun Fact: In gen 3, there is a fully programmed but unused ability called Cacophany. It has the exact same effect as Soundproof, and given Exploud's design and the fact that one of its cards in Japanese has a move of the same name, it is likely that the ability was intended for the Exploud line. But for whatever reason, it was given Soundproof instead, and Cacophany never returned in the data of any later generations, despite there being several other examples of multiple abilities having identical effects, like Insomnia and Vital Spirit, for example.
23:30 no need to apologize, and we are Not frustrated. Your content just lets us share the excitement, and we want the runs to be the Best ones possible as well, especially if "regular" Pokemon beat legendary Times.
You know, it occurs to me as of this video that Uproar and Wake-up Slap exist as counters to Rest strategies. Prior to watching you I didn't put much stock into Rest because it just seemed like the drawback was too severe, but with tanky Pokemon, or overleveled Pokemon like you use in single runs, it's actually viable. Granted only Red ever made good use of that so the moves still don't do much good in PvE. In retrospect, it was probably Red's Snorlax that made them put these in. Wake-up Slap is Fighting type instead of Normal type like most slap moves. It also occurs to me that Smellingsalts is probably to prevent foes from making effective use of Facade.
Exploud had some surprising results, I thought that it's going to struggle a lot in the early game, but having an excess to howl was really a game changer. Surprisingly normal types are really good in gen 3😮. That makes me wonder how Zangoose would do , because it gets swords dance ,but it is a glass cannon.🤔 Next time I would do an emerald nuzlocke I'll definitely be considering using Exploud on my team. I can't wait to see how Hariyama will do next week.😊
Before watching: This is going to be ridiculously easy. The stats are pretty damn good, especially given that it has high Attack AND Special Attack. Which pairs excellently with its TM move pool, where he can just learn about anything he could want. The low speed might be a bit annoying and the first gym could prevent him from just rushing through the entire game… but frankly, that won‘t make much of a difference. Exploud will beat the Elite Four really quickly. And he has enough tools to even deal with Steven at a reasonable level. This will be a top-tier pokemon. After watching: Yeah, not in the slightest surprised. Exploud is just insanely good for a solo-run! As always, I feel you should have two sets of analyses for Emerald: one for getting through the Elite Four and one for beating Steven. That one fight on such high level, right after the Elite Four with no additional gameplay in-between just makes Steve way too defining for any run.
I think the actual play would have been to keep shadowball over icebeam and then stay physical but having shadowball brickbreak rest howl for steven should make the fight a loot easier. Earthquake only gives extra coverage for metagross and shadowball instead would give coverage for claydol aswell, and also give 5 more power against skarmory. you do lose the effectiveness against armaldo though. but I think with plus 6 that should be no issue. But that's talking about the tiniest details, loved the video and loved exploud ever since I was 12 years old :) Ps. I also used to bully the camerateam xD
Honestly? I’m actually not shocked that Exploud did as well as it did. I’m a bit biased because it’s one of my top 5 favorites, but I’ve been saying for years that it’s a seriously underrated and underappreciated Pokémon.
Just a thing about Exploud not being a really strong pokemon : It can learn Boomburst, a rare and absurdly powerful sound attack (gen4?). Base 140, normal stab. With a choice scarf it becomes a powerhouse, blasting everything with sound wave as he should !
Exploud is a solid Pokemon in its own right, and what helps is that its a Normal-type that can take advantage of its special movepool due to its attacking stats being equal. Though the problem is that the Whismur and Loudred stages can be quite painful to go through. The other pure Normal-type lines in Hoenn could provide interesting results. Linoone for example, is really good at the Elite Four due to Belly Drum and a decent enough movepool. Kecleon's ability changes the way you play it in comparison to other Pokemon, and also Slaking, though Truant is a hinderance (add a Slow growth rate on top of that too and well.....). The other one-offs like Spinda and Zangoose can be interesting as well. To my knowledge, in this gen Zangoose gets Swords Dance super early which really helps it. Though you'll save that for a VS video with Seviper given they are counterparts most likely.
Gentle reminder that Fireblast is a cheap TM in emerald with a nice power boost over flamethrower. For Steven only, you could accept the 85% accuracy and secure good ranges.
It's here! My big screamy pipe-organ boiiiii! STAB Boomburst is disgusting. Hidden ability that lets it hit ghosts with its Normal STAB is just the icing on the cake.
Prediction before watching: When I played through pokemon y with only pure normal types, I expected exploud to be usefull as a special attacker, but I almost never ended up using it. Having said that exploud's attacking stats aren't bad and its hp is great. because of that exploud will probably do quite well. I predict exploud to end up somewhere in the B-tier.
Using return to sweep Winona (except skarmory assuming no howl) is better than using shock wave if I did the damage calcs right. This is due to not needing to display the super effective message. The kingdra would not have survived at +1.
pretty sure machop is bulkier than maukihita, so anytime u one shot it u should one shot maukihita as well , could be wrong though. not a fan of the idea of sound type personally. fun run man, keep it up
Exploud was one of my favorite Pokemon back in Gen3, along with Hariyama Breloom and Gardevoir, I think most of my favorite Pokemon come from this gen.
Why Norman never had one of these is a true mystery.

Exploud has basically one difficult fight at the very end with Steven, and I'd even go as far to say that fight is less difficult for Exploud than a ton of other Pokemon. Just an absolutely dominant performance throughout.
Wow Exploud is so much more incredible than I expected! I would have thought the low speed would hold it back but it didn't seem to matter at all
Congrats to Exploud on having a great playthrough.
Genuinely an underrated mon even in its debut gen. Great mixed attacker with awesome coverage options 👌
Awesome! Did not expect Exploud to be that good! You're incredible:)
Idk if u’ll read this but, I’ve spent my day tired and doing nothing after another week of work, and that comment about having some rest actually lifted my mood :) ty :)
I often like to carry a normal type with me on my runs through games, and glad to see a video demonstrating Exploud's underappreciated abilities.
It fills me with joy too!
I encountered a shiny whismur in my first playthrough in emerald as a kid, so I used Exploud for the rest of the game and it was good!
Another overlooked Pokémon kills the solo challenge. Great job Exploud!
Extra part of the Hariyama being Explouds counterpart is:
Exploud has the biggest mouth in the game, Hariyama has no mouth at all.
Man the wait for Mewtwo and Rayquaza's re-runs is going to feel longer each time a mon gets put above them
i've watched all your content since the beginning so i know youre not as familiar with emerald as u are yellow version but exploud is highly underrated, but its basically gen 3's tauros 💪🏾💯
If only Tauros had the medium-slow growth rate.
I loved the interview tag battles in Emerald. I remember going to watch a TV after the battles to see my interview.
Seeing you comment on how early Slaking learns Hyper Beam I am now interested in how it would do backported to Yellow...
That said this is a nice run so far and as a fellow Exploud enjoyer I'm glad it's doing so well!
it would be pretty good considering there are no abilities lmao
Wobbuffet fact: In Mt Pyre are actually 2 Wobbuffet Trainer, one having a male wobbuffet and the other a female
the Wobbuffet Trainer beeing mentioned might have been a minor highlight
Great video! I did the same with the interview couple, chasing them around the map!! 😂
This is the only pokemon I used during my original playthrough of emerald in high school. Big Sound Boi is a machine
Design wise Exploud is fantastic and one of my favorite Gen 3 pokemon.
Exploud is absolutely a favorite, happy to see it get the spotlight
Exploud was a personal favorite of mine, and got me through one of my first ever nuzlockes, so Im excited to see how it does 👀
Exploud is in my top 10 and top 2 in hoenn. Good to see him mowing through the game
Yeah my boy Exploud! He was one of my mains in that gen including aipom, ursuring, zangoose, slaking and wailord I didn't care about types I just picked my favorite designs I never used anybody else unless the game forced you to that was the last gen I played
Essentially normal + wailord. I love it.
I think I actually like that Sound-based moves are a mechanic separate from typing, with abilities and special moves granting immunities, resistances, type-shifts, and pseudo-STAB to sound-based moves.
Exploud was always on my team back when Ruby/Sapphire came out. Love this guy haha
Glad to see my favorite pokemon! I'm hoping Exploud gets a good time
One of my favorite random Pokémon. Great design and move pool, good enough stats and ability to be useable. Kind of in an Altaria tier of fun gen three Pokémon
I can't wait for an optimized run, Exploud can EASILY get a 0 resets playthrough.
Like always Scott, your runs are inspiring and very fun to watch! And that one really surprised me!
Hey Anderson! Good to hear from you. This run really surprised me too!
As a longtime Exploud fangirl i just realized Exploud is pocket monster Big Band
I still remember this was a major team member on my first ever Ruby team when I first bought the game in my childhood.
Just seen his learnset, Exploud should perform very well here.
I was thinking "dang, there should be a SOUND type!" and like 3 seconds later you mentioned a sound type!
It also occurs to me that Smellingsalts is probably to prevent foes from making effective use of Facade.
sleep talk was very strong gen 2. that is when rest was used a lot
Recovery is just so important for solo challenges, unless you want to over level or get risky.
Exploud had some surprising results, I thought that it's going to struggle a lot in the early game, but having an excess to howl was really a game changer. Surprisingly normal types are really good in gen 3😮. That makes me wonder how Zangoose would do , because it gets swords dance ,but it is a glass cannon.🤔
Next time I would do an emerald nuzlocke I'll definitely be considering using Exploud on my team. I can't wait to see how Hariyama will do next week.😊
I love seeing the power of return increase as the playthrough progresses
Its always awesome to see a pokemon that the community seems to think of as trash pull out an amazing time
Agreed.
Before watching:
This is going to be ridiculously easy.
After watching:
Yeah, not in the slightest surprised.
Loved this thing. It was always on my team during playthroughs.
But that's talking about the tiniest details, loved the video and loved exploud ever since I was 12 years old :)
Ps. I also used to bully the camerateam xD
Honestly? I’m actually not shocked that Exploud did as well as it did. I’m a bit biased because it’s one of my top 5 favorites, but I’ve been saying for years that it’s a seriously underrated and underappreciated Pokémon.
Challenge: do an Exploud run using only sound based moves. I know it might be a bit limiting on the attacks, but I’d totally watch that.
I think the reason so many Normal types learn Shadow Ball is to prevent a situation like Gen 1 Eevee.
Naughty by nature. This thing is bound for Hip Hop stardom!
An Arch Enemy reference? Did not expect that.
Awesome.
Yessss! This is the first comment that caught it.
Surprised Scott's surprised that a fully evolved Pokemon would do well in the early game
There are some exceptions, like Delcatty
Just a thing about Exploud not being a really strong pokemon :
It can learn Boomburst, a rare and absurdly powerful sound attack (gen4?).
Base 140, normal stab.
With a choice scarf it becomes a powerhouse, blasting everything with sound wave as he should !
boomburst was added in gen 6
@@vizzy61 good thing i finally ended up using him in gen6 then
Can’t wait to use Boomburst with this thing in gen4
Belly Drum Linoone will be fun!
I always wanted to use one. Another good video Scott
Chuggaaconroy was somehow so wrong about this Pokemon in his Emerald bios. 28:59 Looks like an owl.
I've never played with this guy and actually never new he existed for the longest time
Gentle reminder that Fireblast is a cheap TM in emerald with a nice power boost over flamethrower. For Steven only, you could accept the 85% accuracy and secure good ranges.
Walrein! Walrein! ! Walrein! My baby blue!
It's here! My big screamy pipe-organ boiiiii! STAB Boomburst is disgusting. Hidden ability that lets it hit ghosts with its Normal STAB is just the icing on the cake.
Prediction before watching:
When I played through pokemon y with only pure normal types, I expected exploud to be usefull as a special attacker, but I almost never ended up using it. Having said that exploud's attacking stats aren't bad and its hp is great. because of that exploud will probably do quite well.
I predict exploud to end up somewhere in the B-tier.
Not a fan of it, but impressed by its results. Great video.
Third time watching. 👍🏽 workout distraction through the week 🙌🏽
Using return to sweep Winona (except skarmory assuming no howl) is better than using shock wave if I did the damage calcs right. This is due to not needing to display the super effective message. The kingdra would not have survived at +1.
pretty sure machop is bulkier than maukihita, so anytime u one shot it u should one shot maukihita as well , could be wrong though. not a fan of the idea of sound type personally. fun run man, keep it up
Being a musician i suppose you could say explode strikes a "chord" with you
Exploud was one of my favorite Pokemon back in Gen3, along with Hariyama Breloom and Gardevoir, I think most of my favorite Pokemon come from this gen.
Honestly, mistakes make your videos more interesting. Someone as skilled as you makes a minor mistake and recovery so well
