Consolidation Process - Physical Model

This physical model explains the soil mechanics process of consolidation. The chamber with the spring and the water is a model of a saturated, fine-grained soil, and the spring represents the soil skeleton. The water is the water in the pores of the soil, i.e. the pore water; and the pressure gauge measures the pore water pressure. Lastly, the valve represents the permeability of the soil.
