Liquefaction: 3. Earthquake
This short video demonstrates the influence of earthquakes and liquefaction on the stability of foundations. A liquefaction sand column is used (see reference below) to facilitate drainage. First, the water table is lowered so that the level is just above the ground surface. A brass model of a multi-storey building (weighing 5 kg) is placed on the ground surface. Notice the amount of building settlement as it is placed on the surface of the loose sand. A gentle tap on the side of the apparatus from a rubber mallet, causes the building to topple. The sand is subsequently compacted by applying several mallet blows to the side of the apparatus. The water level is again lowered, and the build...

Liquefaction: 2. Slope Stability
Просмотров 92Год назад
This short video explores the relationship between flow of water and the stability of slopes. A liquefaction sand column is used (see reference below) to create downward and upward water flows. First, with water flowing vertically downwards, a v-shaped trench is excavated in the sand. Then the downward flow of water is terminated, and the stable angle of the slope decreases. Then, an upward flo...
Liquefaction: 1. The Hood
Просмотров 18Год назад
This short video explores the question of whether humans sink or float in quicksand. A liquefaction sand column is used (see reference below) to create an upward flow of water in sand; hence quicksand. A figurine of the Hood, who is the villain from the 1960s Thunderbird TV series, is lowered into the quicksand. Whilst made of plastic, the figurine is an authentic scale model of a human body, i...
Consolidation Process - Physical Model

This physical model explains the soil mechanics process of consolidation. The chamber with the spring and the water is a model of a saturated, fine-grained soil, and the spring represents the soil skeleton. The water is the water in the pores of the soil, i.e. the pore water; and the pressure gauge measures the pore water pressure. Lastly, the valve represents the permeability of the soil. A de...
