Correction: my friend just told me they filmed this right afe daft punk and the contacts really bothered their eyes. That why Kevin has on those glasses in daft punk bc he couldn't handle the contacts

There is a live version of this from The Sing Off season 4 finale (2013), where they returned as previous-season champions. The fact that Mitch and Avi each get to lead for a while may have been a response to The Sing Off's insistence on featuring Scott as Pentatonix's "leader" while they were competing.
I can't speak for anyone in the group, but I can't see K.O. doing drugs.
They did this on the Sing Off. If you go down that rabbit hole, which you should, of checking them out on that show, you need to see their covers of Born to be Wild, episode 7, Marvin Gaye's Let's Get it on, episode 10, and Dog Days are Over, episode12!!!! That is where they got their start. They were so good even back then!!!
You mentioned Mitch's eyes being so red lol reminded me of Daft Punk Medley (which I believe you reacted to already), with the blue eye contacts - Avi's poor eyes were so red in that video cause his eyes didn't like the contacts - and Kevin (the beatboxer) couldn't even wear the contacts so they stuck him in the visor.
I've been diving into your ptx reactions lately so - sorry for the spam of comments as I watch the songs and think of more ptx stuff for you to react to LOL. I am just really enjoying your reactions and commentary on this group. I think you would really love to see their beginnings. They first started off competing in a show called The Sing Off (season 3). The three of them Kirsty, Mitch and Scott had been friends in school and sang a lot together but The Sing Off people told them they'd have to find two more members to enter as 5 was the minimum group size. A friend of Scott's suggested Avi (the bass with the long hair) as a really good bass, and then Scott found Kevin from a youtube video of him celloboxing as he calls it (playing the cello while beatboxing at the same time).
There are, I believe, 12 performances for the Sing Off and it is just amazing to see their progress from babytonix to the pentatonix we know and love today. If you do go check it out - be sure to find the ones with the pre-post commentary/interviews and the judges commentary!
There is a live version of this where they went to the finale of season 4 sing-off and talked to the top 3 groups and then performed this.
By the way did you know they got a star on the walk of fame on Tuesday
they have a huge bright light shining in their faces for hours - no wonder if their eyes are affected by it.

Maybe they did this one just after filming Daft Punk? They all wore those blue contacts except Kevin. I never noticed their eyes here, but I'd be willing to make a bet that that's it! Loved the reaction. Thanks!
Great song. Sounded even better when they did it on Season 4 of Sing Off. Really nice that Mitch started and Avi finished since Sing Off kept them in the background. Great reaction. Hope you start some of their originals soon.
This is another reference to their early video shoots with them all on a shabby couch in someone's apartment.
great reaction and analysis again Sean, i think someone further down the comments made the most sense with their eyes being red, if it was indeed filmed straight after the Daft Punk video the contacts really affected their eyes especially Avi's so it would of course still be showing up in this video.

They went nonstop when they first started out. I think Covid was the first time they had 3 days off in a row the whole year and that was for Christmas. since they started at that time 8 years ago. I'm sure that's why their eyes are red.
they have a lot of great music that is audio only such as 'petals', 'anchor', 'water', 'on my way home'..all originals.
The majority of the early videos are simple, with a couch. The bohemian rhapsody video had the couch for the nod to the early days.
Not sure about the eyes. They toured in 2013 but only in the first half of the year and though they did as many live and television appearances as they could I don't think they were super busy. And I'd be surprised if any of them showed up high to a video shoot; they were and are very focused and professional about their career. Maybe it was just a long shoot; behind the scenes videos for some other shoots in their early career mention shooting for 12-16 hours with no food.

I think Scott and Mitch back in the day enjoyed quite a bit of partying, but they are such perfectionist and professionals I highly doubt they were high while doing anything official for Pentatonix. As far as I know, they don't use recreational drugs ( I could be wrong, but I've never seen anything to indicate they do...even edibles), so I doubt it's edibles making their eyes red. Probably editing is the cause.

*cough* Mitch does. He switched to edibles because smoke effected his voice. Pretty sure he mentioned it briefly during at least one of his Patreon lives. Cannot see Kevin going there, though, I'm pretty sure he doesn't even drink for his 7th Day Adventist beliefs.
