My grandparents Richard and Patience Rolle were born in Exuma Bahamas. Their parents were slaves. My grandparents moved to Florida during the 1920s when the Bahamians were pretty much imported for labor in the South and Cuba. I have my grandparents death certificates that indicate that they were born in the Bahamas. The certificates list the name of their parents. My mother and Aunt visited relatives in Exuma, Bahamas during the 1980’s. Both are now deceased. I wish I would have gotten the information of who are ancestors are that still reside in Exuma. How do I trace the history or see the slave registers of Baron John Rolle?
When my great-grandfather left India for Jamaica he only had one name and it same as yours Pooran. So the British wanted his kids to have a last name so they used his name as their last name.. The other grandfather came from them Burma as a kid to Ja.
From my experience, and from others; most ordinary Caribbean people are not interested in genealogy. Maybe because of a lack of knowledge of their ancestors, or, it's not the most important thing in their lives, as most are struggling to keep their heads above water!
My sister took the DNA test and we know that most of our Bahamian African line is of Senegalese and Nigerian blood. Denys and John Rolle Bahamian slaves were mostly imported from that region of Afrika.
I have African Caribbean roots and I took several DNA tests.
