Me personally I think I would get it to run good and stop leaking oil fix the head light and drive it I would not fix the body drive it till the wheels Fall off its a 700. Dollar truck good work truck and that's what I would do with it
If it's going to be a parts hauler, put a headlight in it and fix JUST what is needed to run and drive safely. Don't sink thousands into it and "flip" it for pennies on the dollar. Junk yard tires work just as well as new tires. It's your money; spend it wisely.
I got a smooth running, stick shift 1999 Dodge Dakota in northwest Ohio for $500! All it needed was an oil change and tires. It's rough with many scratches , flaws, and dents in the paint, but I gotta say, it runs damn smooth.
Nice truck. I've had my 1998 F-150 4x4 since 2000, and it's been a great truck for me. She's getting rough and rusty now, but I'm not letting go until it won't move anymore. They're actually nice trucks.
$26 for coils is a steal! I did all 8 on an ‘02. Paid more just for 1 at Oreilly. I noticed that you have a history of sinking a lot of $ on truck projects and losing $. I would do a 1000-1500 work truck challenge and get all the mechanical and safety items dialed in. Maybe use the truck to practice body and paint with the beard. A video series on adding/reading/fixing the AC would be awesome. Lotta people out there with no AC beaters. Keep up the good work. I like that you don’t over curate your online persona. You’re a normal guy with normal problems pursuing your dreams 👍🏿
Watching this, thinking I'd just pull the bumper out with a logging chain and my tractor and drive it. And boom you did it! Good call on the no ethanol gas, only stuff I buy.
I agree. It's a beater truck, it's not a show truck and doesn't need to look perfect. My father use to tell me "It doesn't have to look pretty, it just has to work". I agree. Focus on the engine, the brakes, the A/C, steering and suspension.
That's what I'm thinking. Throw some tires on there and I used headlight housing and call it good. It would make perfect parts hauled truck as she sits.
My parents had a 95 Ford. For 6 years it leak oil. Took it to a shop . The whole dam time was oil Pressure plug. Simple little thing. The whole dam time Sometimes you just need to get it check out. Spend a little to save alot
@@fadym.23 It's a truck. You don't fix dents, you don't fix scratches, if the body has holes, duct tape. Buy the parts you need to keep it functional and away you go.
For the F-150: The icing on the cake was when you tapped on the dash to get the odometer to light up. I am really looking forward to some great content from the truck.
Similar to my 01 7700 F150 with the 7 lug wheels and yes the center caps are valuable! 315,000 miles on mine with the same ABS light (for a wheel speed sensor) and odometer that works when it wants to. Yours has probably had a transmission rebuild by now, one of the many reasons I love high mileage trucks. These trucks misfire constantly from just about anything. Get your high tech scanner on there and monitor all the systems because the check engine codes these trucks put out are vague. I have had mine misfire from vacuum leaks, a bad fuel pressure regulator, a clogged cat, a bad 02 sensor, etc. Leave her as a beater truck so you won't feel bad about scratching and denting it while hauling parts!
Think you did not do bad considering that you live in Oklahoma. Trucks are worth a lot of money there, just like in Texas. *Would recommend buying a donor truck. One with fluid damage and/or drive train damage from Copart!* _Buying the parts separately would be a way too expensive._ And having a donor truck for spares is super handy!
That's beater i would only replace the broken light and let it be dented as it's a work truck and not meant to be a beauty queen. also street park her to keep the oil off the driveway.
You want a parts hauler and got one. Make it a safe parts hauler, and earn it’s keep. Use it to haul parts to make a solid wrapped truck, then flip it.
Randy, You said it yourself... it's a beater... use it like one. Keep it mechanically sound and drive it like you stole it!!! BTW.. you and Samcrac have encouraged me to buy my first Copart car.. 2012 Chevy Cruze for $1200 with minor front end and pass door damage... easy fix.. Thanks to you and Sam.. Keep up the good work!!
Odometer problem is caused by cold solder joints on the dashboard circuit board. Its a common problem on this era F-series. You can take the dash apart and use a soldering iron to reflow some of the solder joints and the problem will be fixed.
You had a perfectly good square body in the past. Should have held onto it they are appreciating in value if they are clean, and your truck was pretty clean.
The coils should fix that miss pretty fast. You wanted a beater and got one. Keep it - get a headlight, maybe a bumper. Some used tires and a different wheel and drive it. IT'S A BEATER.
Fix the obvious mechanical issues with the truck, validate the drive train, make it safe and then consider the body panels. Use it for what its intended for, hauling stuff!!!, call it good!
As you said it is a beater truck, Don't dump a ton into it. Make it reliable and safe but you don't do the cosmetics on a beater, that's the point. You can always wrap a different vehicle. I'd still keep the truck to use as a beater though for sure.
I told superior auto flips to meet up with you him and his misses are great enjoy their videos... also gotta love yours great beater truck and also a towing rig no excuse to not being able to buy wrecked cars now love the videos keep up the hard work 😁😁😁
No point to doing bodywork on it other than headlight and bumper. Concentrate on the mechanical end. I don't know what to expect on a Ford that mileage. We've had some mid-90s Chevy pickups that go 300K no problem, around here they usually rot too badly to pass inspection before they're dead. But for $800 a few years ago I bought a '93 GMC 1-ton dually with the NV4500 trans in it and drove it home. Hauled several cars on trailers with it. Rusty as hell, tool box on it with only a couple of cabinets even useable. 250K and unknown miles on a reman 5.7. I guess the trans is worth what I paid for the truck.
Great deal for a parts truck. You and Tim will have a great time with this one. Since it is a beater truck, with 300k miles, maybe just to the mechanicals and not worry with the bed and body of the truck. Just a thought. Have a great week!
It's a beater. Just fix the bumper and headlight, and make it safe. It's fine for a parts hauler. Get you a little car hauler you can use to pickup non run and drives.
I agree with other comments, don’t worry about getting the body fixed professionally. You should get some Amazon or harbor freight PDR tools and make a video on how much damage you can get out!
I would just fix the headlight, front bumper, and the oil leak. You have to be careful, that it doesn’t become a money pit. Just drive it, until the wheels fall off, and not fix everything that’s wrong.
do NOT put a lot of money into it. Do not buy a bed or any doors. It is not worth putting unnecessary money into it. Nobody will pay more than $1500 for it, even if the panels are flawless
also if you want to replace the tires. check craigslist for used tires or someplace that sells used tires. It's a beater it doesn't need to have new tires.
I was not a big fan of this generation F150 when they were new because of the design but I have come to very much respect them. Ford had not built this generation of F150 in many, many years but I still see them everywhere. These things seem to be great, damn-near bullet-proof trucks. Looking at those tires on the back which I am assuming were rotated at some time from the front, it looks like the alignment might need to be checked out. All-in-all, I think that this was a great truck for the money and hopefully it serves you well. I am looking forward to seeing you work on this one, I think it'll turn out quite nice. The only thing that would have been better is if it would have had a 5-speed manual.
I personally think most of the comments about being a bad idea don’t look at the entire picture... for average joe not the Best Buy, but for auto auction rebuilds.... I think is a good buy, more videos equal revenue, working with other RUclipsrs equals good deals, wrap with your logo equals more subscribers... witch helps the channel? Am I the only one that can see this.... I watch the videos no matter what you buy because I enjoy it👍
Thats an Medium Duty F250...same body as the 97-04 F150 but its got unique suspension. Not many were made. And that bolt pattern on the wheels is unique to that F250 too! When you look for the wheels make sure you don't get Super Duty wheels they won't fit.
You did extremely well for $700 here in South Carolina I can't even find a truck with a blown head gasket for less than $1,000 let alone a running and driving truck
I normally don't comment on videos but I really liked this one. I have one of these 7 lug trucks myself and it's been a great truck. I drive mine hard, been through mud holes and has pulled over 12k lbs (a bit over the weight rating but it handled the weight perfectly in the northern arkansas ozarks none the less). I did want to mention since you brought up a cat delete, you will need 02 sensor foolers to delete the upper cats. These trucks have 4 (2 per side) The lower two can just be cut off but the upper two require a sensor fooler. These trucks send a signal to the computer if the cats aren't operating right or are cut off causing the engine to run as rich as it possibly can and it will run like 5 out of 8 cylinders have a miss (I learned the hard way). I do recommend the delete as these cats plug up and will cause exhaust restriction to the point they glow red hot (also found out the hard way) at high miles and a dead miss speeds up the process. Still a great truck and worth putting work into if it's mechanically sound since parts are easy to come by and cheap for the most part.
I own a 97 like this take it from me and take my advice buy the motor parts off of eBay you'll save close to 50% coil packs are the biggest thing and mine has 335000 miles on the original motor and trans good luck and have fun
To fix the column shifter location arrow in the cluster and to regain gear 1, under the dash you will find 2 loose torx bolts. Take one out, put threadlocker on it reinstall it and do the other bolt the same and that will correct it. Its above the brake pedal, look for the cable coming down and going out through the firewall. Its a common for them to loosen after 110k or more.
Dont worry about looks! Just make it run strong, new tires, and make sure it stops! You have a winner! Im not really a Ford guy but, i like it just as is!
I agree I would just get the truck 100% mechanical leave the body in that alone use the truck for like you say picking up parts at the junkyard you don't have to worry about a damn thing throw them in there I'll tell you I know it like in my area and I'm sure it's got to be the same way around you you should be able to get a decent set of tires used for a cheap price and if you're going to register it under your name wouldn't that truck be a write-off on your taxes being a quote company vehicle Auto Auction rebuild..., I hate to bring it up LOL remember trucks of the past?
Randy, if you need so.e help working on it. Im in mwc aswell and have been working on my own f150 same body style, i got from copart. Id be happy to help you get it sorted
Intakes are prone to breaking and leaking coolant severely and be careful changing spark plugs, the 2v motor can strip and blow out plugs. I know how to fix that too

Surprised you didn't remove this comment after what he did to you
The tool box in back is the best part of that entire truck!
Agreed!!
So I guess the idea is to build a new truck around those toolboxes.
Me personally I think I would get it to run good and stop leaking oil fix the head light and drive it I would not fix the body drive it till the wheels Fall off its a 700. Dollar truck good work truck and that's what I would do with it
I would do the same thing. If it’s a work truck it doesn’t need to be pretty
you would love Andrew Camarata truck then :)
If it's going to be a parts hauler, put a headlight in it and fix JUST what is needed to run and drive safely. Don't sink thousands into it and "flip" it for pennies on the dollar. Junk yard tires work just as well as new tires. It's your money; spend it wisely.

i mean, you didn't specify what kind of beater is that. is it a winter beater or rander beater?
I like the Eggnog frappuccinos at Starbucks this time of year.

When the engine light is flashing you should pull over. Its flooding with fuel and could damage the catalytic converter.
It is the fuel injector had same problem on 1997 expedition with 300,000 miles
