- This is a detailed guide on how to change the diesel fuel filter on a 2014-2016 Kia Sportage 2.0 CRDI. It follows the full service that I filmed for the same car 2 weeks ago.
The OE part number for the fuel filter is: 319224H000

Thanks a lot for the demonstration, very helpful, I did the operation today following the steps. Just a tip on the step to remove the water sensor shown at min 11:50, I did struggle to unscrew the Philips screws, unsuccessfully, damaging it a bit and ended up cutting its head for a flat screw driver, however, in the process I discovered that you don't have to unscrew it, the connector actually can be pulled out from the metal piece screwed to the case body.

Thank you my friend I used this guide for my 2013 and it worked perfectly. Much better than some guides that seem to think you need to remove the air box assembley? Not required.
One word of caution I bought a Blueprint filter off eBay made by Febi Bilstein and it did not fit because the hole at the base was too small.
Had to go to my local motor factors for a Bosch unit which was fine.
You're welcome! Indeed, you don't need to remove the air box assembly but it's still a hassle with the battery and ECU. I typically use Mann or Mahle as filters, though Bosch is pretty good as well as far as I know. In any case, the OE part number for the disel filter is 319224H000 so make sure that the filter you buy is compatible with this code.
Helped me a lot to replace the diesel filter in Kia Rio III UB 1.4 CRDi 90KM 2017 - it is almost the same as Kia Sportage

I had the chance to be near the mechanic at the dealer, while he was working at my car, changing this diesel filter, and I was very curious to see the condition of the filter… Now you manage to cut it. Thanks!
As a rule for my car, I change the filter every second service, it means about 30.000km or 40.000km, something like this. I don t change more often because as you said, the price asked by the dealer..
Since I am not driving so many km per year it means it will be changed everry 3 to 4 years.
I have the exact battery😅 the original one it lasted about 6 years and a half, but when I ve asked the dealer for a new one, it was available only at order for around 400€ 😮
You got lucky with the battery then 😁 The original one from my Sportage lasted less than 4 years, and the replacement one lasted about 3. I'm currently at my third battery 😁 Regarding the fuel filter, changing it every second service is a good idea, though I'm changing the oil every 10K km so I can push the fuel filter replacement to every 3rd service.
I was trying to follow the guidelines from the dealer for maintenance, not more than 2 years or 30.000 km, but for me, with the city traffic, I was thinking that 15.000-20.000 km it is more than enough.
As for your Kia with 150.000 km , yes… I think it is better like that, more often maintenance will do no harm, you will be on the safe side 😁
Also if you are doing yourself the costs are acceptable, comparing to what you would pay at the dealer.

@@alexdell84 Thanks! Thing is, urban driving is far more taxing on the oil than extra-urban or moderate constant-speed driving. The Kia manual actually classifies frequent city driving among the "severe driving conditions" which implies halving of all service intervals: from 30K / 2 years down to 15K / 1 year. This was my guideline until the warranty expired, then I switched to the 10K / 6 months service interval. Given that the cost is about half what the dealership asks for, I basically get double the engine protection for the same money.

Relating to repairs and unscheduled maintenance, I'm not able to work on a problem unless that problem actually occurs on our car. But if I run into any issues related to the headlight sensor on our Sportage I'll make a video about it for sure.
Nice video. I have 2017 Sportage, i believe the location of the fuel filter is in the same place.
Dont know why Kia doing this shitty job, i had a Qashqai before, the location of the fuel filter was very handy, i didn't had to remove anything to change it.
I'm glad you liked the video. Each car manufacturer uses a different component packaging in the engine compartment... In many VWs or the Qashqai the fuel filter is easy to access and replace; maybe the Kia folks figured it's OK to have the filter less accessible as you only interact with it every 2 - 4 years and they preferred to make other components more accessible instead. I just changed the filter for the second time a few days ago and it took about 1 hour, so it's not that difficult to do.

I'm glad you liked the video! The only way to be sure is to use a scan tool and read the error codes that triggered the Check-Engine light. The only time we had a problem was with the original Kia fuel filter that I've swapped in this video - it had nearly 60K km on it and on 3 distinct occasions we noticed random drops in power from the engine... they all disappeared after restarting the engine and there was no warning light on the dashboard at all.

Hello! I haven't done the EGR cleaning yet, unfortunately. I know it should have been done some time ago, but so far the car is behaving perfectly fine and I have a few other operations to perform on it and the other 2 cars before I get a chance to tackle the EGR.
@@TheMissingBolt thanks mate. If there is no change in the engine’s condition and pulling power do you need to have EGR cleaning? Shall we just leave it alone as they say “if ain’t broke don’t fix it… is it correct?
@@esraelrueda8787 All EGRs eventually get clogged and stuck, there's no way around it. On my dad's previous Skoda Octavia Mk. I with the 1.9 TDI engine, which spent most of its life inside the city, the EGR died and needed a replacement at about 100K km. The EGR on the Sportage is still behaving well even at 160K, but the Sportage has spent more than 50 % of its life on the open road, so that might have something to do with it. In any case, the general recommendation is to remove and clean the EGR every 50K km or so. I plan to do it as well in the coming months.

I wasn't planning on doing these operations (the EGR clean-up did cross my mind, though) but it's a good idea for future videos. Though at the moment I need to spend a bit more time with the Opel and the Range Rover, since the Kia is currently working very well.

In my opinion, you should buy a universal one that can stretch to accommodate multiple filter diameters (like the fuel filter or oil filter) and which allows you to use a torque wrench in order to tighten to spec. This is exactly what I used in the video and that particular tool has proven to be very versatile.
Thanks for this. There are 3 electrical connectors, the bottom one is for the water warning, do you know the purpose for the top 2 connectors?
Well, one of the top 2 connectors is actually the one for the bottom water sensor. The other connector, as far as I know, is for the fuel heater that's part of the filter assembly.
Can you access the filter from below the car? If so could you then simply unscrew the filter with a 76mm filter socket. This would be so much easier than moving airbox, removing battery, moving ECU and unclipping all the electrical and fuel connectors!
I wasn’t able to and I’m pretty certain you can’t. The front sub-frame is in the way and there’s no room to get to the filter from below. Both the mechanics at the Kia dealership and the service manual follow the same procedure that I did.

That engine was rocking around a bit. What happens when trying to prime a push button start Kia ? Do you push the button without touching the brake pedal and repeat numerous times ? Also, would pre-filling the filter help ?
That engine rocking is perfectly normal, the engine mounts are still in good condition. Regarding the priming of a push-button car, please check out the fuel filter replacement video for the Range Rover, which is also push-button. You are correct in that you have to turn the ignition on without starting the engine (press the button but not the brake pedal) for several 30-second cycles. Pre-filling should help in theory, but you have to make sure and pre-fill the filter through its input port(s) / hole(s) and not its output, otherwise you will push unfiltered fuel to the injectors which is risky. Since the system is self-priming anyway, I don't do any pre-filling of the fuel filters myself.
@@TheMissingBolt I have had a look at the Range Rover one, thanks.... Does the Sportage ever suffer from air in the system ? Can it be bled out the same as the Range Rover, or is it a case of cracking the injector lines individually ?

No I didn't. And the Kia dealership where I used to service the car also doesn't use one. I don't think it's even necessary, since the only thing I lost was the trip computer information (radio stations were not lost).

@@esyrelaxchillmusic1423 Honestly, for an NQ5 I'd definitely get a memory saver. The car's electronics, screens, active systems etc. are way more integrated than in the Sportage SL (gen. 3), so it's better safe than sorry for the NQ5 in my personal opinion.

At 20:25 there is a connector with green seal (gasket) I have fuel dripping from there is it just the seal, I though it strange fuel would go to this sensor and be a potential leak
That's just an electrical connector, it doesn't carry any fuel. The fuel must definitely be coming from somewhere else, best check the wire bundle and see there's any fluid dripping on it further up the line (maybe from the fuel lines connecting to the filter assembly...?)
at how many kilometrs do you change the oil filter thank you?
I'm changing the oil and oil filter every 10,000 km (6,000 miles) or 6 months. And the diesel filter on every 3rd oil change (30,000 km or 2 years at most).

El Kia Sportage 2007 usa un motor diesel diferente (tipo Hyundai D). No estoy familiarizado con los detalles de ese motor, pero para la mayoría de los autos diésel, la secuencia de cebado después de cambiar el filtro de diésel es la misma.
Hi, Had mine changed at a full service but the warning light is still coming on !! Any ideas why? Thanks.
I remember the old filter caused me 2 moments where I temporarily lost power and had to turn off and then restart the car. None of them triggered a dashboard warning light, so I'm wondering if your warning light is really related to the fuel filter or some other (possibly unrelated) issue. The best way to know is to have the car's trouble codes read through an OBD2 reader. That should point you in the right direction.

Diesel works as a lubricant to some extent as well. I'd rather not risk injector clogging by having oil from the seals mix with fuel, even if it's in very small quantities.

Yes, you definitely need to bleed the air out from the fuel system after changing the filter. It takes a few seconds of cranking the engine before it restarts, see at 26:30.

@@aml7397 If your gearbox is the 6-speed automatic, then check my channel videos, you'll find a detailed guide on how to drain, fill and flush the transmission fluid. The filter can only be changed by removing the gearbox from the engine first, as it's not designed as a serviceable part.
