    I purchased this HP8647A unit on eBay, whilst testing it on camera the unit released its magic smoke of life and stopped working, just after I said it was working OK ! (yes I jinxed it)
    It blew a metalised paper RIFA capacitor in the power supply, after lots of searching (there are no circuit diagrams for the power supply) I managed to find out what its value was supposed to be (ironically I could just make it outs value in the picture for a replacement power supply I purchased for it, just in case I couldn't repair it).

    Good god I could practically smell this through the screen! Those AC line caps are notorious for exactly this. Nice work and what a deal though!

    I just refurbished this power supply in my own HP 8648C. There are two RIFA caps, one that shown blown up in this video, but there is another 2.2 nF one in between the two white connectors for the mains and the output to the main board. That also should be replaced. I used KEMET metalized PP and I think they will last a really long time and be much more reliable.

    I've recently repaired a bakers dozen of Tek 2465 series scopes, and those "PME" labeled AC line rated capacitors in the switching supplies had either failed completely, or the cases were cracked and on the verge. We don't even hesitate to leave them in anymore if still working. We just shot-gun replace them all now. They are bad news. That was a lot of fun watching it go. Glad you got it fixed.

    Rifa class x/y caps - they blow on anything from that era - I replace them now as SOP whenever I get something before even turning it on.

    that was indeed interesting. and....shocking! I'm looking at a used 8648c myself,so this was very helpful . Good job.

    Ah the infamous RIFA. This exact thing happened to me during Hurricane Harvey using one of the 8560 series spectrum analyzers as a receiver. Guessing humid environment had a play since it worked in drier environments. Still, this will happen eventually. No harm done either way. Late to reply but might I suggest a power strip that has a switch or a power cord you can unplug fast. Depending on age and design damage can still be done after the power button is turned off.

    Hi, I have just the same problem on my hp8647a....perfectly working testing it on the spectrum analzyser ans after half of an hour a lot of somoke on the back this afternoon! I opened the box and discovered the yellow 47nF broken. Then I read this video! It seems that others components are ok.... I will keep you inform if repaired. Jean-Louis

      I have just replaced the explosed 47nF capacitor and tested some peripherial components that was OK. I have then tested the power supply alone with load on 5v ( 1.5a) and on 15v ( 0.7a) and was ok. Then I connected the power supply to the instrument and all opérational. I will measure the current consumption on 5v +-15v and 38v and keep you informed. Jean-Louis

    • @jean-louisbezombes7135
      @jean-louisbezombes7135 Год назад

      The measured DC current consumption is:
      5V : 0.95A. +15V: 1.06A. -15v : 0.35A +38V : lower than 0.1A. The power mains consumption is 52W ( on 235V ac) / 80VA.

    Hi!
    Everything looks great, congrats!
    Can you help me, please?, What's the type of battery that this generator uses?, Can I buy it online or where?

    Hello
    Excellent repair work congratulations.
    question
    If the 3 Vdc lithium battery is replaced, is it necessary to recalibrate the equipment?
    Thanks

    • @TheDefpom
      @TheDefpom  3 года назад

      It depends, if the battery was flat, then yes, or if you accidentally lose power to the circuit whilst swapping the battery, then yes. Normally you would wire up a temporary supply to ensure there is no power lose whilst swapping the battery out.
