Dr. Joe DeMarco, chiropractor and owner of OcraMed Health, talks about shoulder pain and how to fix it.
The shoulder is a complex joint. That is why it is often referred to as the shoulder girdle or shoulder complex. Part of this shoulder girdle is the sternoclavicular joint.
As the shoulder moves, the clavicle (collarbone) also has to move. Movement of the clavicle occurs proximally at the sternoclavicular (SC) joint.
Over time, the sternoclavicular joint can become dysfunctional. This interferes with normal clavicular motion. Loss of clavicular motion can translate stress into the shoulder causing pain, loss of motion, stiffness, and general dysfunction. This can lead to acute shoulder injuries or might be the reason you are experiencing chronic shoulder problems.
Dr. Joe discusses the SC joint and demonstrates how to perform soft tissue release work to the clavicle and SC joint. This allows for the return of normal SC joint motion and function.

I came across this video as I've actually managed to hurt my left CS joint through golf when hitting some hard ground. However I've struggled with a right CS joint that moves up and clunk's back down with a pop every time I move my shoulder. I've seen three different medical professionals, it's caused me 15 years of not being able to use my shoulder properly. Now I find this. Its early days as I got the massage gun on it yesterday and tried to manipulate it but it literally doesn't move and it still pops but it feels better. I'll give it a few days to rest up a bit and have another go but I can't believe no other person I saw mentioned manipulating this joint and why it may be the reason I struggle with my shoulder. So thank you.

Wow. This video really nailed it and describes to a tee what I've been feeling in that area for the longest time. I've had this on my left SC joint foreverrrrr. After performing the assessments in this video, the left side is totally hung up and immobile. I even have a noticeable "nub" right at the SC joint and a burning-type sensation when compared to the right side. Probably because the clavicle has become "unseated" from the manubrium. Perhaps this can be one major reason my left shoulder is getting re-injured.
Absolutely nailed this one, sir. I will incorporate these immediately and I look forward to eventually having a smooth, mobile SC joint so that I too may bench press forever and maybe this will contribute to improving my shoulder mechanics. It's gonna take some time...those facial adhesions are well entrenched.
Have a Like and a Subscribe as my way of showing gratitude.

Screwed my right one up today bodyboarding, held onto board during a wipe out. Maybe caused by landing on my shoulder on a sand bank yesterday two days ago. Felt like the shoulder got pushed inwards. The wipeout today i’d say tipped it off as shoulder was weakened previously by the sand bank impact.

This has been helpful. I have a severe case of SC joint immobility. I found this to be insightful in that I can work the joint myself. I wish I knew this a year ago! My SC joint has been stiff and stuck for so long and has caused me to refrain from martial arts. This video has empowered me to take action and actively heal my SC joint. Do you have any recommendations for severe SC joint injuries and immobility? I do not have any fractures, but because I have had this injury for a long time, it has gotten substantially worse and more stubborn.

Sleeping on my side causes me to wake up with my collarbone locked up almost every day. It happens on whichever side I slept on the previous night. It's this dull ache and I don't have a lot of mobility right there. I have to sit up and push down on my shoulder with my other hand while stretching my neck up and in the opposite direction. It feels really tight and then all of sudden I get this really big, deep pop right in the sc side of my collarbone. After it pops, the area stays a little sore for a bit, but it does give me back mobility. Gonna be trying these tips because I recently started lifting more weight with my barbell squats and deadlifts, which is causing a similar kind of pain and limited mobility. However, I can't get it to pop to make it go away like I can when I first wake up. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I hurt my shoulder 10 months ago and feel a hard grow on right side of neck right above collar bone…Pretty much near where u say SC joint is. It feels like bones or tendons, certain ones if i press and move it, it hurts. Could this growth be a SC injury i got from bench press? My shoulder also keeps cracking if i run or move it

Hi, thank you for the video! My current situation is very unique- every time i move my left arm, my collarbone makes a clicking sound and u can actually feel the ligament moving in/on the collarbone. The pain runs all the way from my collarbone to my upperback/shoulderblades. I did an MRI + Xray and it shows that the ligament is inflamed + my collarbones are not identical on both sides (the painful side has less gap and is higher than the other) My doctor only recommended that I stretch a lot and gave me some pain medications which arent helping. I've been having this issue for over a year now and it does not seem to get better... I cannot exercise/go to the gym anymore because it is always painful. Please help. Thank you again!

Hi Dr. Joe, my sc joint has been popping with no pain for about a week. This is more of an annoyance than a pain. I believe that I overtrained with HIT weight lifting. This popping only occurs when extending across my body in a round house punch type movement. I am going to rest for 6-12 weeks to address the overtraining. Is this something for concern? Work the techniques from the video for a few weeks and see if they help. If it doesn't get better, then have it looked at by a doctor/therapist in your area.
