I get so excited when they talk WWF late 80’s, early 90’s
cuz were a naive kid back then who loved wrestling. Am I right or what?!?!
Hell yeah
Fellas I rented SummerSlam 89 on VHS from my local CT video store(Video Galaxy) no less than 30x as a kid, no joke. My Mom would get mad at me for how often I rented the same WWF PPV VHS tapes and they wouldn’t sell them to her probably because we were their best customers and paying their monthly electric bill.
Amanda Ward haha that’s awesome, what was your top 3 WWF videos to rent from opening night video?
Macho Man I was the same about Survivor Series 1990. I used to rent it from West Coast Video(our local video store) religiously LMAO
Bruce's Dusty impression is first class 👌🏻
It's sooooo tired.
WWF/WWE Summer Slam 1989 Watch Along begins at 04:07. One of the best Summer Slams ever.
1989 is my favorite ever, followed by Summerslam 1992 in London.
Dizzy ty hunny ☺️
Thanks Honey
Really liked the brain busters in Wwf. They would have been good mega power opponents
Lol, no not in WWF. Hogan wouldnt sell for Blanchard plus they never fit in WWF. Tully & Arn were NWA all the way.
Can't believe they think the IC Title match is too long. The length and those great near falls add to the drama. Normally a shorter Warrior match is better. But for such a big PPV match and the story they told it made sense. What a job Rude did that night.
Big Boss Man is a top-five big man of all time. He's personally right behind Undertaker for me.
Yeah, too bad those two didn't have a better match at WrestleMania XV. That was a big misfire between two legendary WWF big men. That was Boss Man's only WrestleMania loss.
That's a nice fun fact that I was unaware of when it comes to Big Boss Man win loss record at Wrestlemania
Big Boss Man was 5-1 at WrestleMania, winning (or being on the winning team) at 5, 6, 7, 8 and 16.
Dizzy yeah I think it would have been better if it wasn't a cage match.
This was the first WWF event I ever saw. A lad at my school had it on VHS and I borrowed it off him.
I'd never heard of any them apart from Hogan but I was amazed with the Warrior!! I thought he really was unstoppable. Great look, too.
Still my favourite Summerslam.
This was the only WWF VHS I owned, I wore this tape out!!!
Lol I still have it on vhs
@@stephenmcshane546 Me too!
Any ppv after 2001 is a complete bore for me. Anything from 87-97 gets me so fucking pumped.
Bruce making the rooster noise & getting aggravated over Terry Taylor never gets old.
Also singing with my baby tonight
Agree with you both!!!
dalyn sanders I love 💗 STW
"Dusty was an incredible athlete, he could move when he wanted to."
That's just what people always say about incredible athletes.
You also have to look at who's commentating aka Bruce Pritchard who is a fat fuck himself.
Palace Of Wisdom Dusty gave up by 87. He coasted on his promos. Go watch the clips of a match he had with Andre The Giant in Japan from 1980. He actually did a head scissors on Andre!
The 2nd most recognizable athlete in the world, 2nd only to Muhammad Ali..
Sensational Sherri is my favorite female wrestling Talent of all time. She was amazing
100% agree. She's the sexiest of all time
@@theodorebelmont7922 goat status
The GOAT - she put 75% of the boys to shame...and mattel screwed non us customers out of her figure lol ;)
@@dalynsanders Love Sherri! Even thought she was great in WCW. Loved her working with Harlem Heat. BTW I never heard that rumour about her and Hogan?
@@theodorebelmont7922 what....I could maybe agree with you about Sheri being the sexiest at that time but how many pretty women were in wwe then. Miss Elizabeth was so beautiful but Sheri was pretty too but had that bad girl sexy look. But no way "of all time" when wwe showed of Trish, Kelly Kelly, Lala ect. They all crush Sheri! My opinion
So surreal to look back and see Tony Schiavone, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard open up a WWF show.
This is when our local cable company started carrying the other WWF PPVs. Good times.
1:17:00 Disagree 100%. The Warrior/Rude match was AWESOME here, one of Warrior's absolute best, right up there with his WrestleMania matches with Savage and Hogan.
Hellwig (the person) gets a lot of criticism, which spills over into his Ultimate Warrior gimmick. Ultimate Warrior was incredibly over from 87 to 91. His character was protected to perfection by Vince McMahon. Warrior was never meant to be a Dynamite Kid or Curt Hennig technical master. Warrior was like a "Masters Of The Universe" cartoon musclebound monster brought to life.
Most of his matches were short BUT exciting, which made perfect sense. It made the character seem like a wild force of nature.
Even when he had to do a longer match (i.e. versus Randy Savage or Rick Rude), he ROSE to the occasion especially on Pay-Per-Views. Now, certainly, it was those ring generals who led the matches... but you still need the follower (Hellwig) to play along with the structure of the longer-style match.
Warrior was exciting, and was an excellent fit back in the 80s to capture the minds of kids who watched Saturday morning cartoons in addition to pro wrestling shows.
Extremely well said. The majority of Warrior criticism comes from so called "smart marks" who weren't even alive during Warrior's heyday. From 1987-1991, there was NOBODY bitching about Warrior's ring style or what he may be like outside the ring. Warrior was majorly over because fans WANTED to see him race to the ring, shake those ropes, and then knock the hell out of somebody in record time. When it came time to put on a longer match, he did, and typically did it with flying colors.
Warrior was my favourite back in 1992. Back then, as a 9 year old, I wasn't interested in work rate. Only characters. Now I'm older I appreciate work rate and psychology but back then I was only interested in larger than life characters. Everyone is an expert these days and they dont just kick back, relax and enjoy wrestling any more.
endofthelinejoel Very well said. I switched from being a Hulkamaniac to being a Warrior pretty quick as a kid. I am glad I got to experience wrestling in its Golden time when you either absolutely loved it or just didnt watch it,these days everybody is a damn booker. Warrior was OOOOOVER like ROVER to me as a kid, though now id put Savage or Rick Rude much higher on my list,to make it like Warrior was just abysmal and unbearable to watch is a lie and WWE talking point.
Coachg everyone is 100% a booker now. You’re so right.
I also love the watch alongs with Bruce. Bruce provides such great insight.
* Dusty Rhodes voice *Please!!! Clap for me ... This is a good episode so far
Rick Martel was my first favourite wrestler and maybe my all time fav too. Small world. I thought I was the only one.
Brain Busters vs Hart Foundation was an excellent match, despite the ludicrous stipulation that the title wasn't on the line. Making this a WWF tag team title match would've punched up the drama sooo much.
if i remember the match was set and then arn/tully won the tag team titles a couple of weeks before summerslam.
That was the kayfabe explanation given. It could EASILY have been announced as a title match. Brain Busters won the titles on July 18, 1989 (aired 10 days later), a full 6 weeks before Summerslam, so the explanation doesn't wash. All it did was kill an otherwise phenomenal match.
2:15:00 Bruce admits he doesn't know why it wasn't a title match.
Bret said in his book that he and jim were none too happy about losing that match with no belts on the line . Thought it made them look weak.
I was in Middle school in Indiana when this came out. The PPV was about 15 dollars, and it was a must-see. It was all the talk at our school. We were just kids and Loved the WWF back in the day. It was nothing like it is now or what it has become.
Im amazed Hercules never fought Zeus. Would have made more sense if Herc was Hulks partner. That way Macho and Hulk would each have a Greek God for a partner. I know Hercs not the most charismatic but from a character POV he makes more sense than a comedy act like Beefcake.
But beef 🥩 cake 🍰 was Hogan’s best bf
I've got the old box set of "WWF" Mainias; (1-15) on VHS and they are beginning to wear out. That period was my favorite but I dont have any vids of the SummerSlams, Rumbles, Survivor Series, so I love listening to the 'in-between' stuff. Well done boys. Love ya Bruce. Brother Love was the shit! Keep it up boys💪☝️🤘🇨🇦
Dude you prob already know this but get all this on peacock for $5!
I can't believe Bruce was only in his mid-20s during this time. About the same age Wilford Brimley was when he did Cocoon.
Best summerslam ever for me. 89 to 90 the golden years
Fan growing up in the Golden Era. Only discovered STW about two years ago. Seen most episodes by now. You guys are awesome. And Bruce: You are on of the funniest people ever!!!
Really wished they would have commented on the All American Boys theme.
my uncle let me borrow that vhs as a kid and I would watch it over and over. the hart foundation intro is awesome and I was happy warrior got his belt back
To the Warriors credit, if it’s true, that “it’s just more fucking luggage” is a great line about holding the belt. Works literally and metaphorically.
Bruce doing Dusty "Referee, he hit me in my splotch" Lol.
So funny
Man i love the ultimate warrior he was my all time favorite
I love John Cena
Has anyone tried doing an intervention for your drug problem?
Rick Martel had a real estate business outside of wrestling, not sure when he started it but it likley impacted his push especially towards the IC title.
This was my first pay per view too. Also the first thing i watched when i got the newtwork. So stoked for this episode.
🗣This is hands down one of the finest podcasts out there (all genres).

@@Dizzy1980 good shit
I never realised the extent to which Terry Taylor went to emulate Ric Flair.
The knee-pads give it away. That is quite pathetic.
Show starts at 3:55
Mr. Love, Mr. Thompson you two silly fellas keep coming with the great content ! Another great look back at one of the greatest times in wrestling !
1st pay per view I ever ordered. Watching this before SummerSlam 2021 tonight.
SS '89 was 1000x better than '88 ......love this theme too.......the pop when Hulks music starts was insane
Cobra_999 that is not an opinion. SS 88 had a lot of squash matches. It was just a glorified house show.
The visualization of Donald Trump putting an absurd amount of WWF swag on Willie Nelson is hilarious!!!!
I never liked Piper either on Mic or in the ring. Never got why he was over.
some wrestlers are like actors... New York was where movie actors went and stage actors went to nwa/wcw...
this was my first exposure to pro wrestling. I was 4 years old and became a hulkamaniac. zeus scared the crap out of me !!
U old af Eddie, need a wheelchair old man?
I remember the build up to the first two SummerSlam's. It was built up for weeks, seemed like a long build up instead of the PPV every month.
I really enjoyed this episode
Wish they had the video playing in the background
Bruce's rant on the build design and the air conditioner is fabulous
Sherri is the only person in history to make the atomic drop look sexy. That outfit she wore really exposed her lingerie n stockings when Hulk gave her the atomic drop
1:48:00 Bill Eadie stated in a shoot interview that he never agreed to unmask on camera. The promoter announced the unmasking without his knowledge. That's why Eadie unmasked but it wasn't shown on camera.
Love these videos I own the WrestleMania Survivor Series SummerSlam and Royal Rumble complete Anthology DVDs so when you guys review one of these events I watch it on my TV put my headphones on on RUclips and watch it while listening to u like I'm with you guys lol I need to invest in the network I guess. Oh and spot on Dusty impression lol
14:39 "the crowd`s into it" means it`s a good match, that`s all that counts, love this golden era cause the atmosphere from the crowds could be epic.
I really liked tully and arn in the WWF. Even as a kid I liked the no nonsense heel team. Not being flashy set them apart from every other team.
Not to mention they had mastered the art of being really sneaky bastards as heels.
8 year old bruce doing his dusty , amazing
My favorite show of all time.
You guys have already covered unforgiven 1999
Count down begins at 3:55
You guys should do a full show on blue chew and your experiences with it
Those Dusty impressions have cured my hangover.
The peak of my wrestling fandum was during this time.
I cried when the mega powers broke up (its ok, I was like 8) and I chose to be team Macho. Didn't think anyone could beat The human wrecking machine Zeus. LOL great memories man.
peace and love I was exactly the same!! I was 10 years old at the time of this show and it was the peak of my fandom as well.
Fandum or dumfan
"Boss Man was one of the most underrated big men"
Who underrated him, Conrad? Every time I listen to a review of an old show of his, people do nothing but rave about him.
Palace Of Wisdom maybe he means underrated by the majority/casual audience rather than the hardcore fans maybe?
The Bossman was awesome in my top 5 faves of all time
I think he means that bossman was never really given a long run as a top guy despite the talent
@@matrolmem3463 I always find it funny when people complain about the belt nowadays changing hands way too fast and how this devalues the meaning of it, but at the same time complain about the many wrestlers who should have had a title run LOL. I see so many people saying Rude, Ted Dibiase, Jake, Piper, Hennig, basically every mid-card wrestler they liked should've gotten a run LOL
@@weworldwide1348 to me it was kind of ridiculous that Hogan held the title for so long..3 consecutive years. Henning. Rude, and dibiasie were viable heels that Hogan could have dropped the title to. Savages heel run with the title was good. But Hogan only really dropped the title to another face in the warrior. At the time warrior was pretty over but his run was anything but memorable and a year later Hogan had the title again.
39:07 In Super Mario voice: "Oh yeah, CBT time!"
My most memorable ppv
Favourite podcast love the way bruce tells the stories and he is brilliant at doing voiceovers. Favs have to be
1. JR
2. Michael Hayes
3. Paul Bearer
4. Dusty Rhodes
5. Randy Savage
Not to forget jim cornette and brooo........
McMahon is my favorite voice impression.
Seems like Bruce is funnier during the watchalongs than the regular show..his Dusty stuff here was amazing...in pullic, if ya weel
When Conrad wants to do a watchalong you know you are in for a good time.
1:15:00 I think the issue now is that the fans already decide who they want to be the next champ and whomever wwe have planned to set up even if it's the last guy the fans 'wanted' to be the champ is irrelevant.
Look at Cena and Roman. Fans cheered the hell outta them when they lost their respective rumble both to Batista oddly... then by the time WWE pulled the trigger the fans had moved on to an indie guy or another underrated star instead
We had the PPVs on late he in NZ. For this one I can remember ringing my friend at 11pm waking up his parents just to tell him I was allowed to stay up. Still get harassed about that.
I did that in the UK when Flair won the Royal Rumble. He was in bed. It was past 11 - we weren't. HIs Mother wasn't pleased. But I just had to get it out. Hate what's happened to wrestling but will never deny that it entertained my ass off at times and I appreciate it.
"Why didn't you just text him on FB messenger?!?!"
- people born in 2005
Hercules (Herkaleez as Ronnie Garvin put it) had what Jake The Snake called The Baby Blues. If you were one of the WWF's bigger stars and Vince started having you wear baby blue colored tights, you were still a star, but against other stars you were basically a high class jobber. And by this time in his face run and until he would be turned back heel and put into Power and Glory with Paul Roma (who I think could have been a 90s version of the Hart Foundation) ... Hercules wrestled in baby blue colored tights and white boots. On TV he would get his own squash matches to make him still look like one of the bigger stars, but at PPV's he'd become a jobber to get other guys over, or in the case of SummerSlam 1989, a pawn the growing Garvin v Valentine feud.
“ hulk hogan!!” “ beefcake barber!! “ that’s the only thing I remember Zeus saying before the match. Good job he had Randy Savage to do the rest of the promos!!
Sure do wish I had the network
When Zeus used to say “beef cake barber” 💀💀💀
1:51:00 - I like those old style $100 bills too. No fancy colors or anti-counterfeit designs. Saved one just for fun.
In September, I would like to hear about Unforgiven 2001 and 2006. Those shows had some great matches!
The Only thing the WWF dropped the ball on for SUMMERSLAM '89 was the Non Title TAG TEAM Match of The BRAIN BUSTERS vs HARTFOUNDATION!!! The Brain Buster's just didn't go over as expected in their 2 years in WWF. Demolition, Powers Of Pain, Legion Of Doom would have whipped their NWA ASS!!!!
It's weird that here Bruce said he preferred Arn as a tag wrestler, yet in another video years later he said he hated arn and Tully together and they were better as singles.
I have to disagree entirely about Warrior's matches. His longer matches are my favorites and, I would argue, the objectively better matches. Especially against Rick Rude here and the following year, and against Savage and WM7.
There's a breakdown after the guitar solo. It's the exact riff. Highway Star. Deep Purple
Christmas morning 1991's entertainment.
Shit dude, me too. Exact same thing - Christmas 1991 - my first ever WWF PPV
2:25:48 Talking of Jim Cornette, there was a fan down in the front row of this show visibly wearing a Midnight Express/Jim Cornette T-shirt - it's even visible in the photos in WWF Magazine's SS89 feature.
I always thought Warrior's music was like Black Sabbath Paranoid, but the Deep Purple song kind of sounds close to it too.
I thought Summerslam 89 was way better than the Summerslam 99 that they did last year. This was a good main event. Randy being the control freak that he was you know the match was going to be special. Rude made Warrior look like a star.
59:19 Tony Schiovane and Jesse Ventura later became a regular pairing in WCW '92-'94
What was Dusty Rhodes doing with a nightstick? Did he get his gimmick confused with The Big Bossman?😅
One of his comman man gimmicks was being a police officer. He even wore a cop hat a few times.
Dusty had stolen the Big Bossman's Nightstick on TV to start that feud.
1:40:04 Wasn't Crockett any more - the TBS buyout had happened by this point but WCW was still calling itself the NWA in public to try for the old school dollar. (TNA would do similar years later as NWA-TNA)
What the hell was Beefcake saying in that promo hahaha! He made Hogan story sound like Tolkien😂😂
Hart Foundation vs Brain Busters match is a classic
No comment on Brutus’s promo being stolen from Running Man?
I think Conrad was Lowkey upset about Bruce putting emphasis on tanning... Hints Eric Bischoff's sting conversation... haha you just can't let it go can you Conny!!!!
Hints lol
I love when Conrad quietly tells Bruce fuck you hahaha
24:51 I love hearing Dusty promos.
There was a day, back in the day when they would call it in the bed... That was too good. Y'all had to have had that one at the ready. Y'all are on a Roll. Hahaha😂😂😂
It's hard to keep up... I see what you did there
Complain warrior couldn't have long matches when he does they say it shouldn't be long lol
Short and sweet baby just the way u like it ☺️🍆
Wrestlemania was numbered as it was seen as the Superbowl of the wrestling calender. To keep it special, all other events couldn't be numbered.
Undertaker started doing his dives over the top rope quite a bit of time before Badd Blood.
Was there ever a plan to put the belt on Zeus?... That is hilarious
Conrad , I have a question for you. Who is easier for you to get worked up ... Easy E or brother love?
Was Hogan talking about Miss Elizabeth's "headlights" ?
Between the "sexy, curvaceous legs" and the "headlights" remarks, that was a very racy promo for its time.
How shocking that Brother Brucer never really does his Brother Love Voice.........It just hit me
That Marty jannetty thing was awkward
The WWF should help Janetty get settled into rehab but they would probably fire him before he sobered up.
