  • "This melon gives me the chills," says Amy Goldman. “You will blink your eyes with disbelief when you sample its sweetness, which is more like brown sugar than white. It will melt on your tongue, and your mouth will water for more.” Petit Gris de Rennes is surprisingly easy to grow, even in short seasons, producing 3 to 4 exquisite fruit per plant. We share this and hundreds more of our organic, regionally adapted varieties here: www.fruitionseeds.com/Organic-...

Translates as "Small/little grey from Rennes" (pronounced "ren"). Rennes is the main city of Brittany in northwestern France.
As an aside, "Petit Gris" is also the main variety of snail you find in restaurants in France (with butter, garlic and parsley usually).

Just ordered this variety from Seed Saver's Exchange ! It and Emerald Gem are the 2 I settled on, for the flavor(s) which I can hardly wait to try for myself ! I don't even like Cantaloupe/muskmelons, but they may be beginning, finally, to "grow on me" ! I had an amazing harvest last season ( grew em for my husband/others) and ended up looking up if one can freeze it. I assumed it wouldn't be something one can really preserve, and that after freezing it would be a weird texture, but seemed the only possible chance ( besides dried I guess... yuck ! ), guess I was sorta thinking of my husband eating it half thawed, in with cottage cheese or yogurt etc. ... and was starting to wonder about a tropical smoothie when I found just that ! Recipes for smoothies using frozen cantaloupe cubes ! This is " THE bomb " : C. chunks, orange juice ( I use a few tablespoons of frozen concentrate), coconut milk or any yogurt, & a splash of vanilla. Making me like Cantaloupe flavor coming through, & I can imagine it will be even better with these varieties !!! I grew Minnesota Midget ( small & very short season variety) & Hale's Best last year and both did super well. I saved seed, even though they would have crossed and may not grow any of those this year tho, or not at this location anyways, due to wanting to save seed from only a cross of the two I just ordered, without their genetics being "watered down" by any others for now, too. My goal is to eventually just keep saving seeds from the best & earliest ( and longest keeping on the kitchen counter) of any of them, for seed, and have my own "landrace" cantaloupe variety, if I'm using that term correctly.
    So exciting !
BTW - beautiful location, great video !

🗣 You've got the pronunciation quite well actually!
I've just moved around Rennes. This part of France is supposed to be cold for Melon ... But you know with global warming ...
So my question is: where have you actually grown this Melon?

Oh thank you for this video. It is supposed to be an heirloom variety of french melon from the city of Rennes. And there is no video in french talking about it, but yours, gave me wanting to grow this melon. Here in Belgium we also have short seasons. Can you tell me where are you from? Thank you. Have a good day

We have shorter seasons in Colorado, but it's a bit drier and hotter in July and August. How will this melon do in this arid climate?

What kind of knife is that?

It's a 'cabbage' knife that I generally just call a 'harvest' knife. They're my favorite all-purpose harvest tool.

I was disappointed . First time in 3 years finally waited until it was yellow.. Thought they were to be picked green before. I wish I had seen your vid 2 yrs ago. But my normal cantalope type you buy in the store was so sweet and delicious. So far this Rennes melon has not met up to my expectations. Maybe it needs more fertile ground. Both type melons were in the same ground given the same treatment. So I don't know why it isn't as sweet.
