I think the SCHF51M is a great knife, I bought one just before the holidays and have enjoyed it immensely. The screws for the handle scales came loose during batoning and one was lost. I contacted Schrade through the Taylor Brands website and they sent me multiple replacement sets. Not only is Schrade listening to the customers and putting out great products for the price, but they back up the items with awesome customer service.
Great video and info. I have the schf38 which has no choil, but in the same family as the 51 and 52 (it's 1st gen., along with the 36 and 37). The sheath is nice, not some flimsy waste of money. There is also a fero rod and sharpener in the pouch (free). Cannot beat it for $30.
I just subscribed to your channel last week , and so far you are doing some great stuff. Because of your review on the 511 Rush 12 backpack I purchased it and it came in Sunday . Really loving that bag a lot . I'm also a 511 fan , I have the MOAB 6&10. I have the schf 36 and like it a lot , can't wait till the new Schrades hit the market . Great reviews !!
I ordered the Shrade 51 and the 52 on a whim about 40$ each CAD roughly...Wasn't expecting the chunk of knife when they came! If it turns out to be good 1095 steel then these are fantastic. Competetive with cold steel / Condor in terms of value.
Great vid. I have about a dozen Schrade Knives. my current favorite and constant outdoor companion is the SCHF36. I think it was the predecessor to the 51. it is a wonderful knife and at $30 I have not been nice to it. I have had to redo the edge a couple of times, I have pried, chopped, baton chopped and processed a whole bunch of meat with it. I will eventually ruin it but after a year it is just getting better and better. If you want a kydex sheath for yours I would happy to whip one up for you.
+John Burr Thank you I appreciate the offer, as much as I like them I'm not too sure if I want to keep them. They are great knives and certainly well worth the money but I almost always grab my ESEE knives when I'm heading outdoors. Thank you for stopping by. be safe.
John Burr I have to agree John, the 36 is a great knife so the 51 has to be right there with it. I believe the only difference is the coating and the handle jimping.
Schrade has fooled a lot of people the past few years, bringing back the quality they used to be known for, yet have kept prices so low. 5 or 6 years ago I wouldn't have even considered a Schrade knife. Now they have my attention, and some of my money. LOL Great video, and a great topic. Schrade knives are not just for beginners. They are the real deal.
+Deputy Prepper Thank you! I was under the impression that it would be some time around this time, mid to late October. Like many other releases they may have decided to delay it. If I hear anything I'll certainly let you know. Thank you for stopping by. be safe.
Great review, thanks for sharing. I use the hard holsters for my handguns, and find that they carry better, and are more comfortable and secure way of carrying. Have never tried it with a knife, will have to look into that.
+Hatch61 I Prefer kydex for holsters as well as knife sheaths over any other for a variety of reasons. it just works best for under all weather conditions.
+Airik1111 I haven't the time or the supplies, I'll just order one, there's some really good Kydex benders out there that can do far better than I ever will.
WarGrrl3 That comment I made a year ago but I still like choils on my knives if they are a certain size. The Schf 51 Was to short for such a thick knife but the schf 52 is an awesome knife I sold mine to my brother I really want to get the micarta version. I have gravitated towards 5-7 inch blades now and actually just got a Cold steel SRK which is an awesome knife, I also have the Gerber Strongarm, but I like their Prodigy a bit better now that I have both to compare. I tell ya what though, that SCHF 52 is a fantastic design for chopping and for $35-40 you can't go wrong.
I still cant decide whether this knife is a "good knife," or "good for the money." With the price point im trying to tell myself it shouldnt matter. Nice review.
That's funny cause Blue mountain bushcraft channel made a video with that same title name. I for one think these Schrades are totally worth it, I love my 52 its a great knife and very comfortable.
Another alternative is the Becker Bk2. I have both the Esee5 and the BK2 and they both have advantages. I like the wider blade "from spine to edge" on the Becker even over the Esee5, makes it slice and chop a little better, but I still have a warm spot for my Esee5. Also you can find a kydex sheath for a Becker for $35 these days.
I bought the esee 5 because you recommended it and I love it I would never change it for any thing.as far as shrade goes IV had bad experiences but I do like your review and your videos.
You make a good argument concerning the Schrade SCHF51 as a substitute for the ESEE model 5, certainly in terms of cost. The Schrade 51, from my perspective, looks to be a refinement of the earlier creation by Schrade, the SCHF36. More than likely an even less expensive blade than the 51. I happen to own the Schrade 36, the ESEE 5, and the Becker BK2. I mention Becker because I feel that someone on a tight budget would be able to afford this blade. It is superior to the Schrade in every way and might perhaps have even been the template for the ESEE 5. Though Schrade uses 1095 steel, it just doesn't have the quality of the ESEE or the Becker. I think it feels cheap and not as much fun to use. I enjoyed this video and was moved to add my two cents.
+Teachering I'm not a big Becker fan, not bad knives just don't care for them personally. I'd take the 51 over the 26 any day, I like the changes that Schrade made when they designed the 51. The majority of the ESEE knife designs came from Ontario knife company I do believe, they have some history with ESEE. If I recall Ontario "was" making the knife blanks for ESEE for a long time till they parted ways and now ESEE uses Rowen for their knives. I do appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to comment. Thank you!
the Esee is more beautifull, and may be it's little more better, but for me it's too expensive, the Schrade is the same steel, but it's more comfortable in the hand and it's 3 times cheaper. Exactly because i like the 1095 high carbon steel, i will get a Schrade schf36 for 28-30 $ (in Amazon). The Schrade comes in a complect with a ferro lighter and a stone for sharpening. As to the sheat, i can make myself easily a nice leather sheat for horizontal carrying. For me it's the Schrade schf36 - no doubt.
I don't. I did some time ago but I stupidly let it go, it's a great knife. Don't hesitate, get it, you'll be happy you did. Thank you for stopping by. Hope all is good on your end.
Good video Tim, looks like Schrade is really starting to pick things up. I have two Esee 5's so I really don't need this but it's good that Schrade seems to be making better quality for a really good price. Mike
I don't like choils either, so I bought the schf38. It has no choil, and is a little longer than the Esee. The 38 is in the same family as the 51 and 52. These numbers are driving me nuts!
I have the ESSE 5 and love it. However, I would have no qualms about buying the Schrade if I didn't want to spend that much money. Schrade seems to be putting out some good knives lately at unbelievable prices. Thanks, Tim.(Thank goodness for the 2nd and 22nd Amendments)
I what crazy made up scenario did you die from having a schrade over an esee. If you find yourself in that scenario, your already a goner for getting yourself in it.
I have the esee 6 that is a nice knife. have several schrade knifes and why because the cost of other knifes is higher than I am willing to pay most of the time. Still a good knife I like them very much but I really like the esee for better. Oh and schrade has sold out to S&W buy your schrades before its to late.
honestly id skip the schrade and go for the esee. buy the best knife you can and if you cant then save up! even if it takes a year , it will be worth it. im only 13 and when im allowed a fixed blade ill save up for as long as I need to get the esee 5!

Hell yeah brother! Great knives at a fantastic price followed up with awesome service. Hard to beat that.

When it comes to value with a good knife it is hard to beat a Schrade. I love mine.
Agreed. 👍

5.11 certainly has some good gear for sure, I'm very happy with all my 5.11 packs. Thank you for subscribing, it's very much appreciated. Stay safe.
I've got the schf9. very good budget alternatives
nice review thank you for sharing . The Ontario rat 5 is another good blade for around 75$.
I ordered the Shrade 51 and the 52 on a whim about 40$ each CAD roughly...Wasn't expecting the chunk of knife when they came! If it turns out to be good 1095 steel then these are fantastic. Competetive with cold steel / Condor in terms of value.

thanks for responding so quickly, I will let you know if I hear anything,
Tim- excellent comparison! Very good video!
I don't see 150ish as a expensive knife but 30 bucks is a great deal for a sharpened pry bar
Schrade has fooled a lot of people the past few years, bringing back the quality they used to be known for, yet have kept prices so low. 5 or 6 years ago I wouldn't have even considered a Schrade knife. csh 62 Agreed. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
I´m a little bit sceptic about the heat treatement and the hollow grind on the schrade. What do you think about Becker BK2?
Pierre Larsion Great knife! Check out my videos where I tip/blade tested 3 Schrades. I'm impressed how well they did.
Will do! Love this channel by the way. Baught the Esee 4 after watching you and could not be more happy. Best regards from Sweden :)
Good review and comparison man
+The Daily Shooter Thank you for stopping by.
Pretty good alternative if you can't afford a Esee! Good video Tim!!
Thank you! I appreciate you stopping by. Be well.
great review, do you know when the scfh51 is going to be released.
+Deputy Prepper Thank you! I was under the impression that it would be some time around this time, mid to late October. Like many other releases they may have decided to delay it. If I hear anything I'll certainly let you know. Thank you for stopping by. be safe.

+Hatch61 I Prefer kydex for holsters as well as knife sheaths over any other for a variety of reasons. it just works best for under all weather conditions.
Good informational video. Especially for a beginning crafter.
$27.41 on Amazon!
Schf51? I just looked I'm not seeing the 51.
+TheTacticalDefender my bad...it was the f36 I think
+Frank Bishop Still a great knife at that price. I do like the changes schrade made in the 51 though.
Better yet just buy some kydex and make one yourself if your able. That's my plan for the 51&52...good comparison I personally like having a choil.
+Airik1111 I haven't the time or the supplies, I'll just order one, there's some really good Kydex benders out there that can do far better than I ever will.
Airik1111 I prefer a choil on my knives as well

I honestly feel it's worth every penny. Not crazy about nylon sheaths but the knife is solid.
That's funny cause Blue mountain bushcraft channel made a video with that same title name.
I for one think these Schrades are totally worth it, I love my 52 its a great knife and very comfortable.
Airik1111 great minds think alike
Schrade steel leaves a lot to be desired. Just not a substitute. I have two and both times I was frustrated.
Another alternative is the Becker Bk2. I have both the Esee5 and the BK2 and they both have advantages. You completely left out the fact that the sheath has a diamond sharpener and a fire steel.
That's not why people will buy this knife. Besides the fact that they're crap.
I bought the esee 5 because you recommended it and I love it I would never change it for any thing.as far as shrade goes IV had bad experiences but I do like your review and your videos.
Rat-5 is half the price of esee 5
Yes it is.

+TheTacticalDefender I enjoy your channel, very much. You offer very good reviews and insight into choosing the right gear.
+TheTacticalDefender *36. Not 26. Sorry.
+TheTacticalDefender Thank you! Be well.
It's the longer one
?
Great video

good video bro. Do you have an ESEE 6 also? I have the 4 & 5, and i'm debating a 6 now.
I don't. I did some time ago but I stupidly let it go, it's a great knife. Don't hesitate, get it, you'll be happy you did. Thank you for stopping by. Hope all is good on your end.

A great choice at a greater price, however I like the full blade of the E5
I don't like choils either, so I bought the schf38. It has no choil, and is a little longer than the Esee. The 38 is in the same family as the 51 and 52. These numbers are driving me nuts!
Becker BK2 👈
It's Micarta, not MyCahrta :-) Sorry had to get that in. You would probably not like my southern accent either, LOL.
Lol No worries my friend. Be well.
You too :-)
The video was great by the way.
10:17
wait.
Wait.
WAIT.
If I'm getting a Schrade, I'm getting a Schrade?!?!
How does that even WORK?!
LOL
I have the ESSE 5 and love it. However, I would have no qualms about buying the Schrade if I didn't want to spend that much money. Schrade seems to be putting out some good knives lately at unbelievable prices. Thanks, Tim.(Thank goodness for the 2nd and 22nd Amendments)
+Jerry Wilson Schrade really does seem to listen to their customers, their new knife line is an example of that. Thank you for stopping by.
The link is a cheaper esee
The Schrade has a hollow grind and is not as strong as the ESEE. I wouldn't trust the Schrade with my life if the circumstances dictated.
Nor would I. ESEE is always my first choice.
I what crazy made up scenario did you die from having a schrade over an esee. If you find yourself in that scenario, your already a goner for getting yourself in it.

Still a good knife I like them very much but I really like the esee for better. Oh and schrade has sold out to S&W buy your schrades before its to late.
Yeah ESEE knives are great! Schrade are good knives for the money but I'll always take ESEE over Schrade providing the funds are there.
honestly id skip the schrade and go for the esee. buy the best knife you can and if you cant then save up! even if it takes a year , it will be worth it. im only 13 and when im allowed a fixed blade ill save up for as long as I need to get the esee 5!
Lol if this knife saves your life isnt it worth the money?
Plus putting aside 10 bucks a month for a knife is hardly a fortune
Sid Organ
The schrade can save your life just the same, only for less $$$.
The Schrade is great design BUT the steel and or the heat treat they use is a joke, those blades snap like twigs!!!
bill R Have you watched my two videos where I stress test and tip test two Schrades? I was rather surprised. Check em out.
Unfounded statements.
