    At first, the twist caught me off-guard. However, when they showed the young boy playing his brand new DQ game and later, as an adult, wanting to play the latest DQ, I said, “That’s me!” I was that boy and now I am that adult that keeps returning to the series to experience the next adventure and everything within it! After that, I accepted it and enjoyed it a lot!

    I love everything about this movie without even knowing about the franchise before Smash. I think most of the hate comes from long time fans not seeing the movie end like the games but I think the ending was a good way to avoid making an animated series and to deliver a good message

      I’ll have to say, as a long time fan of the series and Square Enix in general, the movie isn’t objectively bad because of the ending or anything that was played out differently, it’s just that it doesn’t deliver what is wanted as far as development of characters. In the game you get to watch as everything happens and how you change the people around you. In this it’s more get from A to B, add a few laughs and sad moments, and tie it off with a nod at the connections gamers have to games. It isn’t inherently bad or offensive, it’s just disappointing to the original content and narrative that we love, and that original content could be a great movie, but this isn’t that representation. This is a representation of how we are a part of our games, in this case both literally and figuratively. I’d have to say that while I did watch and did enjoy, I do also see where they rushed some scenes and character development along to push out this final result. Hopefully you understand, it’s not bad, but after having experienced the story through many hours of scrolling text and rigorous grinds, it just has so much more to offer that we see it doesn’t and we know that it can’t because it’s a movie and that isn’t what the movie is trying to be and while it is respectable it isn’t the deep rich story that we feel and know by heart and that difference is what disappoints the most about the movie
      In conclusion, I spent about 10ish minutes trying to explain how a movie about emotional connections to games is disappointing people’s emotional connections to a game, and I’m somewhere in the middle of this feeling XD

    I'm a fan of the original game and story.
    I went into this movie blind, but was aware that it wasn't well received in Japan.
    Throughout the entirety of the movie, I had a blast watching it. I felt like I was hit with a bomb of nostalgia, despite the changes to the story and its pacing. I questioned why it was ill received.
    Then I hit the ending and I finally understood.

  • @lohto3
    @lohto3 4 года назад +34

    I get what they were going for, so does everyone else. It's pretty blatant about it. But as most of the Japanese audience thought, I also believe whatever the message may be, it was in the wrong place, at the wrong time, delivered the wrong way.
    Something like "games matter" is a message that might resonate with people back in 1992, when the game came out. Back then, gaming was taken a lot less seriously. But in 2019, gaming is widely accepted as an art form, now surpassing both music and movies combined in revenue. This message is not needed now, it's in the wrong time.
    On top of that, it's at the end of a Dragon Quest movie. That's the wrong place to deliver this message. Dragon Quest is popular. Dragon Quest is so popular that old and young, parents and children, groups of friends, they all played DQ together. It's not something that was shunned, not something you need to defend in a manner like that. That's like One Piece, a manga that is hugely popular, having a volume dedicated to telling its readers "hey, it's okay to like One Piece." No shit. If fans were left waiting for months in anticipation of this special volume, and this is what it said, everyone would hate it. Their love and expectations would be met by disappointment. People watched this movie for being Dragon Quest, not for this forced, unnecessary message.
    It's delivered the wrong way because it achieves the opposite of what it wants. It wanted people to take the story and characters seriously, not dismiss them. But it cheapens them instead. The movie thought the best way to show how important those characters are, is by having them be fictional inside even this work of fiction. It told people that these experiences matter, by telling us that Luca didn't actually spent years as a slave, didn't actually get married, didn't actually lose his family multiple times, didn't actually spend years as a stone. Yes, he experienced them and it was valuable to him, but it cheapened all the suffering. In trying to tell people that "it's not just a game, it matters," it ended up admitting "it is actually a game, even if it matters."
    I'm fascinated by the comments here that like the ending. It's such a huge difference from the initial reaction I had, and the initial reaction the Japanese audiences had. I'm glad some people enjoyed it, but the difference shows that Dragon Quest still means very different things to the western and eastern audiences, even if DQ sales numbers in the west have been increasing.

      Nope, I'm right there with yall. Really caught me by surprise!! The twist was very unexpected to me. All the weird details earlier in the film made sense afterwards. Didn't play any DQ game but I played many JRPGs like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy. I sympathize with the main character's feelings about his experiences playing those games. I thought the movie was good before that twist. But after, I believe it to be great for those that have played video games (any genre) and related to their stories and characters

      Yeah, I agree with your point on the details that made sense later. For instance, I thought the title was odd, how Luca never really "aged" during the film when in the official DQV artwork, The Hero really looked like an adult and also the way the monsters died. It was all pixellated and I felt like, "why?" The twist didn't ruin the overall movie for me and I look forward to some more Dragon Quest related films in the future.

    I enjoyed the movie; even with the "twist" in the last ten minutes. But I understand the issues some have with it and how jarring it would be for long time fans.
    I suppose that while a two-part (or ideally, a trilogy as you opined) adaptation would have been much more suitable to let the story "breath," as you said, I think the reason this movie happened in the way it was adapted along with the "ending" is because the powers that be either think one 100+ minute feature film is all that is possible for the market to bear when it comes to a DQ5 story right now.
    Or, it's a test to see if DQ feature films have enough interest to produce more. If that is the case, we shall see.
    Looking very much forward to your DQ4 video! Thanks for the review.

    I thought the movie was great and it did a great job getting its point across. That point being, in my opinion, that the feelings we have when playing through these games are real. They help to shape of opinions and points of view. It sounds kinda grandiose but I think it's true for some of us. Those characters may not be real people but their ideals are something to learn from. In comic books, Superman is seen as a beacon of hope and an ideal for people to try and attain. I believe the same for some of the characters in other media we have. I grew up watching anime and loved how it could invoke real feelings and get you attached to the characters. These games do the same, with the difference being that you get to experience and take apart in the stories. The film may be about DQ and its fans, but I think it's about all the other stories that we love and having fond memories of.

  • @skins4thewin

    Considering the animation is just so damn gorgeous & well done, it's a damn shame they didn't get the story bits right. Not having the Child section be fleshed out more was a HUGE mistake, specially not even showing the Hero meeting the two girls as a child! Most essential of all would have been showing the scene where a sad Bianca gives the Hero her ribbon to remember her by. That in my opinion should have been ESSENTIAL for allowing the viewer to grow an attachment to these characters! That not being included is just mind boggling to me.
    Also like you said, not being able to feel the weight of what the Hero has been through is just absurd, as that was pretty much the main focus of the game itself & what made it so great for so many of us. Seeing just how much this guy has suffered & yet still remaining confident was one of the highlights of the game & a big reason why we love the game so much. The fact that they completely botched that aspect of the storytelling is a real shame.
    Oh god, and that ending... Do I even need to go into what was wrong with that? There was ZERO reason to do that! None. It's just plain dumb no matter how you look at it.

    I agree with the fact that adapting an RPG into an hour and a half movie is not good and the pacing of this movie shows the big problem in following way too close the source material. But honestly I had an amazing time watching this movie. I didn't thought all the changes did that much damage and yeah the ending is so WTF that I still don't know how to feel about it. But I really like this movie, one of the best I've ever seen

    • @blumiu2426
      @blumiu2426 4 года назад +1

      The problem isn't following source material, people need to stop saying that and learn how to write. The issue is fitting that content into a single film or number of episodes. You try and write a whole new story, it turns into something different with semblance to the source material aka loose adaption/bad adaption. As was said, they should have told the story in more than one movie instead of cramming and chopping out key themes and events.
      And...aren't you the guy on Twitter advocating for censorship? I might be wrong, but your name and icon look oddly familiar...

    • @skins4thewin
      @skins4thewin Год назад

      I actually disagree quite a bit.... The problem was more that it wasn't faithful enough, not that it was too faithful. There are a lot of moments where whoever did the script/directing clearly didn't understand what made the original great & wasn't portrayed correctly or accurately. So ya, I wholeheartedly disagree. That is absolutely not the problem here, because it's actually not that faithful to the original. Hell it doesn't even show the Hero meeting the two girls as a child which is just absurd.

  • @skins4thewin
    @skins4thewin Год назад +1

    I like the part where you mention the writer/director not understanding what made the game great, aka the part about traveling with your kids. It seems to me whoever wrote/directed this didn't understand a LOT of things about what made this game great, which is quite concerning. I will truly never understand why big companies continue to try to get non-fans to make video game adaptations. It NEVER, EVER WORKS!

    The ending is divisive as hell, I honestly LOVED the movie, I get why people disliked the ending, and even if it just did the usual final battle from the game I would have still loved the movie. If they make another one, I would prefer if they just follow the game, a DQ1 movie could be amazing too, leaves a lot of room for characterization and world-building. I just loved the monsters and that they actually used music from the games, hate when Hollywood adapts shit and they feel like they need to distance themselves from the original source for some reason. The way they work the videogamey stuff is icing on the cake, monsters dissapearing after being defeated, monsters dropping money, the way herbs work, how they call out the names of magic, etc... (The final battle is incredibly animated too).

    I liked the movie. The MC was revisiting his nostalgia for the original DQ5, by playing the game. Plus, the game activates a suggestion program, that changed certain events based on his desires, which explaines a few of the elements of the story that changed, and why most of the child hood part of the story was skipped. If a high tech VR version of my favorite early 2000's game was made, I'd do pretty much the same thing.

    @danielramsey6141 4 года назад +1

    Personally, if I was to do a Dragon Quest movie or Final Fantasy movie... I wouldn't base it on Any of the existing games *(Gasps!)*
    Hear me out, I know the last time this was done with Final Fantasy The Spirits Within and Unlimited. They didn't turn out so good, but I feel that with how these games were made is What completely hurts most of these films. I won't lie, some games movies can be adapted and translated rather well to the screen, look at the first Mortal Kombat and maybe a little of MK: Annihilation. But here's the thing: Adaptation! That's ALWAYS going to be a problem when it comes to video games and condensing the elements down to fit a 1/2 hour or a 2 hour run time.
    If I were to make these films, I would make them 3-part Epics in order to make feel natural!
    But 9 Times out of 10, Your not going to get that due to Investor decisions and Studio skepticism! I mean these's films have to convince not only the Audience, but also the people behind ths desks. And looking back at these movies, I think I may have found a good solution to these problems.
    First! Face facts, we CANNOT ADAPT Every Event from a major game. RPGs in general are incredibly difficult to try and condense due to the ammount of characters, people, and places that happen. Instead, I would advise that for games of this Degree and Density, is to simply ignore them! Ignore making a 1 for 1 adaptation and try to instead make an original story with stakes and with character focus. However, what i do advise is to keep the Reacurring Themes, Creatures, Animals, and maybe a few references to past games as easter eggs! This is where Spirits Within failed, it did not have any strong ties or "Final Fantasy" elements within its story, instead it was set in a Disjointed Future Dystopia On Regular Earth, with NEW YORK CITY!
    They could've done something else, so long as a Chocobo or moggle popped up!
    These movies need to act as stand-alone Titles first Before you can sign up to make more! And when you can get a sequal deal, you can add to that 3-Act Structure by showing that there is far more coming down the line for the heroes.
    Second. After adapting the first Successful Rpg movie, start looking games that are shorter and to Where you can Make 1 to 1 Adaptations from! Believe it or not, there are a few out there that can be made this way, and in 3-parts. And as much as I hate to say it...Final Fantasy 13...is probably the most adaptable. The First Game is literally a Movie on Wheels - in video game form! Most of the events in that game can be condensed down, Bosses Removed, and Scenes can be fixed and adjusted to make more sense and add more commen sense, and what ever information was explained in Data logs can now be added to the game, so long as it provides both context and character development! Plus we can also make Cocoon much easier to Deciper and run through, as it is an artifical Planet that is basically a moon hanging over Grand Pulse. Simplify the Concept of all the terms or don't use any of it! Instead of using L'sie, Just use Cursed!
    Instead of "Focus", Use "they Fulfilled their Task", and so Long as you get across that the Fal'sie basically the name for the GODS in this world, than that too is fine! The Hallways basically become Non-existent.
    Thirdly. Always know the difference between adapting stuff like Sonic and Mario, compared to games like Zelda or Metal Gear. The Former games can be made and fixed up in ways that are easier since most of the games aren't really narrative driven. Their Action platformers with level transitions and very little plot, you hardly if at all have to follow the rules...and sometimes that leads to mistakes like the "Live action Mario bros Movie", and sometimes that leads to awesome stuff like "Poke'mon: Detective Pikachu" (let's face it, most of the Pokemon games are most of the time not packing any Narratives at all!). Stuff like that can be easily adaptable and even "Grand Theft Auto" is adaptable into a rated-R flick due to how most of the Narratives in the franchise are self-contained one Off stories featured around low Criminals doing dirty jobs in order to get by!
    With Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, and Final Fantasy. They have LORE, and reacurring themes and Elements. Sure you can adapt a 1 for 1 story, but its most likely going to be way to dense.
    And Finally and Lastly. As much as I love Sequal Video game movies, or Fan-Celebrated moves. Those only adhire to a smaller demographic, and they will only be FOR FANS! Making Stuff for Just the Fans is alright from time to time. But, We're trying to reach a much larger audience! Making stuff for just for the fans won't be a viable method to getting major revenue. Also, Let the artists and Writers who know how to handle developing and adapting these movies put in the work! Studio mandates only hamper And let's also bring to light one of the Worst and Laziest Video game Adaptations on Film That I have Personally seen on netflix! ONIMUSHA 4: DAWN OF DREAMS!
    Where do I begin!? No Only is it lazy, its a half-assed Recap of all of the Cutscenes from Onimusha 4, you'd Think I'm Kidding here, But its actually real! You can find 2 to 3 hour videos on youtube for free! But This is an actual movie! It even has DVD copies! Who in the Hell was asked for this?!?! And its narrated by Grand Daughter Jubei! For God's sakes people, don't ever stoop to releasing Straight to DVD fluff as this!
    I hope you all learned something from this and hopefully plan to use these methods, hopefully we can get Someone's attention in Hollywood to see these points and finally make adapting video games much easier.
    Please excuse any typos I may have for this.

    I really don't feel like it needed to be 2 movies. Just an extra 20 minutes to half hour would have been enough to at least make the movie FAR better. If the childhood bit had been merely twice as long & showed the hero meeting the two girls along with Bianca giving him her Ribbon at the end, that would have been good enough.
    Just a quick 30 second scene of him bumping into Flora would have been fine, and a quick few minutes of him & Bianca spending a lot of time playing together along w her giving him the ribbon would have been fine, although more screen time with him & Bianca as kids would have gone a LONG way in making the story better & allowing the watcher to grow a connection to the main characters.
    Of course having the movie end normally by just following the normal plot of the game would have been far better than the nonsense we got at the end, that goes without saying.

Still, the qualities of this movie lied in good scenes and moments. The overall experience was not satisfying, with a ridiculously rushed pace, some unforgivable (but inevitable, given its length) cut content from the original story, and a feeling of wasted potential. The high points of the movie for me were the Bjorn battle and the final battle against Ladja.

    I have never played a Dragon Quest game, and this was my first introduction. I actually disagree with a lot of your grievances you noted in the movie and also think it's not as bad as you say. You gotta give n00bs like me more credit :p.
    I do agree, a lot of stuff was hastened to fit into the movie timeline, but I thought they did a really good job fleshing out how the characters were related and what was happening to the main character considering the timeline. Also, he was only in the simulation for 2 hours by the end of it. If it seemed fast for us, it was just as fast for him. I think the fact that everything was sped up and relatable to people who'd played the games was important considering the overall message of nostalgia and replaying childhood memories from your own perspective.
    For instance, I remember telling my wife on multiple occasions "dang, this guy just never seems to get a break. It's always one thing after another for him". Sounded like I understood the amount of crap he was going through regardless of the quick pace. I do agree though, I would've loved to have the fleshed out more, but it was a nostalgia trip. This isn't "Dragon Quest the multi-season anime". Honestly, the story would've been too generic for something like that so what they did in the movie format made more sense for what they were trying to accomplish. "These are the parts you remember the most from these games".
    Then there's the love triangle with Bianca and Flora. It was clear Bianca was another love interest as soon as Luca wouldn't tell her why he was trying to defeat Bjorn and after seeing them so friendly with each other, it was immediately apparent how difficult a choice it'd be for Luca. I told my wife "oh man, Bianca's gonna be pissed when she finds out the reward". It was even more surprising when she helped him propose. I remember telling my wife "I guess they weren't as close as romantically involved as I thought?" Then you see her eyes after she leaves that scene, and it's obvious something was up. It was somewhat revealed right before when Flora noted "and Bianca approves?"
    While it might seem strange, I think they captured the feeling of a young man completely unaware of his female love interests. Most people don't understand the phrase "men and women can't be friends" until they're married. Here, he was clearly unaware of this important
    fact like a child. After taking the potion, he had to man-up and talk to the father. While the father was calling him names, it was clear he didn't hold anything against Luca; that's why he let him keep the sword and saved face with the farce of them having a tiff. Bianca even makes this clear in the next scene by pointing out it was probably all an act. I watched this in Japanese and know enough of the language where the subtitles aren't my go-to for emotion. So it's possible you saw this scene differently because you either took the subs literally or watched in English.
    Lastly, the ending was amazing. To me, it hit home. I've had the same feelings of growing older and knowing that I'm playing a fantasy setting. I've been playing Divinity: Original Sin 2 as of late and have had similar emotions to the main character. As I've grown older, it's become more difficult to invest my time and energy into a make-believe world, and it became apparently that was the _real_ message of the movie all along.
    If it literally ended with the sword going up in the clouds, I would've been entirely disappointed. In no way did I want to watch a cliche movie about a hero destined to beat the evil villain at the end. The fact that the villain succeeded and changed the movie into a philosophical dilemma, that was the true genius of the movie. That made it completely worth watching because at the end, he'd regained his memories of the real world and knew that he'd have to party with this fantasy setting again after reaching town.
    There was a lot of interpretation of how the ending would affect the character after he'd leave and even you, the viewer. I felt inspired. The main character clearly saw this as one memory to truly cherish. Something extremely valuable to his later life. Meaning, whatever happened here, the fact that _he_ now became the hero, would change how he lived his real life. It was definitely a story of growth but more like: "to grow up, you don't have to let go of the past" rather than "to grow up, your real life has to suck".
    Maybe this hit home personally because I remember explaining this same thing to my father. I had a hard time wanting to grow up because all the adults I'd seen had boring lives I'd never wanted. Although now, I'm myself married with kids and still have fun playing these kinds of games. I even have a VR headset myself and still enjoy immersing myself in these other worlds. While my kids can enjoy it with me when they're older, right now it's mostly a solo or co-op with my wife. I'm assuming the staff that worked on this movie were in the same mindset as I am today. It would make sense to me at least, which makes the ending even more important for people in my situation fighting against the idea that growing up means giving up fun.
    P.S. I forgot to note there were multiple times where they alluded to the ending, more than you noted in your review. Things like "he's more powerful this time" or something the dragon said about doing it over again. I'm sure there were others I also didn't catch. The mother must've known she was in a simulation. Made that part even more exciting when I found out why that was the case.

    You know what this movie could have been........a story about how this game affected someone.......how this game made some one life better by changing how they looked at the world. Showing his life, growing up getting married,having a kid,.......side by by side of the game scenes (in cg of course) as dq5 is life long story so yea......but here an better ending. It'll end with him defeating the final boss in who shadow maybe representing the scary future. At the end as the guy is moving stuff around his home. he or his kid(s) finds the system (snes)with dq5 in it as his kid is a bit confused on what it is.
    He then tells him it his favorite game of all time as the kid wants to play and maybe because they are suppose to move things. Make them sneakly set it up. they play it abit as the mother catchs them and looks to them having fun together. she lets them be for a bit as she hums the theme of overture as it actually play in the background. The protag would smile too putting an hand on his kid shoulder as the movie end with zooming on the tv saying continue your story? With them pressing yes....... Did i make a better story?

    I thought the movie was great.
    The child part was badly rushed, but the 2nd and 3rd act were amazing imo (beside the plot-twist and how they handled Harry).
    If they added 20 more minutes and made the film 2 hours instead of 1H40, this movie would have been amazing. Just animate poperly the child part, at least tease the fairies with Bianca reading a book or something so that they don't come out of nowhere, let some scenes breath and replace the virus shenanigan twist with a proper Nimzo fight and it would be a 10/10 for me.
    I found the "Pankraz believes his son is the hero" well done, since in the game, you have the sword and you need to find the hero, but here it's the opposite, because if it were the former, Luca would have no reason to go to Mostroferrato in the first place.
    I also thought the jokes weren't that big of a problem ? The "exploration" part with the overture playing in the background was great with how many visual gags there were. As a DQ fan they were a treat for my eyes, like the whole movie. The scene where Luca finds his great sabercat might have started as a joke but ended up really heartwarming with the way he recognized him and how they hugged. These funny bits really contrasted with the more emotional ones you wouldn't expect to find in an animated movies, like Pankraz' death, the petrificiation part or that whole Bianca's marriage sequence I thought was fantastic. I really didn't expect the witch to be Nessa, which is sadder considering this adaptation really emphasizes the fact she loves Luca.
    Overall, this movie is still great despite its flaws. It would have been better if it was split into 2 movies of course, but it's not really an exact adaptation of V either. It wouldn't be called Your Story if it was. I really hope this movie was an experiment for more DQ movie adaptions, I truly believe they can make something great with this franchise.

    "True to the character". Maybe it isn't true to your experience and interpretation of the character but perhaps it is to the person who happens to be playing the hero this time around. You keep saying that its not true to the character throughout this review. We are talking about Dragon Quest here who almost always makes the hero a blank slate character for YOU to fill the role. Is it really so hard to think that someone could have attempted to go through these caves or trials and get stomped, run away, heal up, then come back to fight again getting stronger. Is that not what Dragon Quest is about? This is of course what I consider to be one of Dragon Quests weaknesses (though I did really like the hero from DQVIII for some reason) and strengths at the same time. The hero is whoever you are or who you want to be. Complaining about the way a character was portrayed who has no actual character or personality is stupid since everyone is going to have a different interpretation and preference unless you can somehow back it up with solid reasoning.
    While I do agree about Nera's father and the lack of finding their castle and heritage I thought that the romance scenes with Luca being scared and unable to propose to Nera worked. Its very japanese or should I say Anime. Same with Bianca's drunk scene. She is more the tomboy type so how would she not be a drinker? Even if she wasn't you could interpret it as her way of dealing with her own feelings for Luca. So I thought that whole part worked very well. Might be my favorite part of the movie. I get the sense that you are not a romantic or feelings type person. I on the other hand am that type (introverted feelings sensitive type person) so the relationships and romance matter a lot to me. Considering how long the game is and how quickly and abruptly the scene happens in the game I think it was well done.
    I didn't beat Dragon Quest V I admit. I got to the part where your kids rescue you from being stoned and you head off to a castle fighting alongside them. As such I can't comment on anything past that point. However, while the ending of Dragon Quest V may have been completely lost let me remind you of the title of this movie - Dragon Quest: Your Story. Not Dragon Quest V - Hand of the Heavenly Bride. To my knowledge there has been no Dragon Quest movies up until this point. I believe the point of this movie is to represent Dragon Quest Series as a whole instead of focus on the point of Dragon Quest V. Of course there is something to be said for them choosing this story - I guess because its beloved. I kinda liked the ending. It feels like a message to all people that the stories in video games matter and feel real to the people who play them. It did pull me out of the story but when looked at in that context I think it works. Considering how difficult it would be to cram DQV's story into a movie I think it makes sense. It makes me more interested in going back to play DQV.

    • @mr.gentleman2358

      The points where I say "true to the character" are only at the points where the game makes an explicit statement about the character. For example, all the parts about bravery are outright said by the game, such as when the character is first enslaved. White Horii's characters are blank slates, they are given contextualization. III's main is given a kind of swashbuckling adventure. IV's main is given a tragic backstory and by the end, he is visibly exhausted in the remakes. And in V, there is some narration and inferences about how determined and steadfast the character is. Chrono Trigger gives minor inferences as to some of his personality traits as well.
      On top of that, the MC in the movie is given a standard Disney/Dreamworks/Pixar teenage male personality and development. Does anyone actually imagine themselves in a video game that way? Getting stomped in a cave and coming back may be true to Dragon Quest, but I don't think the cringy western animation comedy way it was presented was true to the series at all.
      Making the assumptions I am not a "Romantic person" is also a very huge leap of logic. My issue is simply with how these scenes were written and presented. It didn't feel like DQ at all. It felt like they came from something that was not DQ and felt cliche. The "scared to propose" didn't even feel Japanese. It felt like it easily could have come out of a western film as well with all of those "scared to ask a girl out type scenes". Just because a story could be a good idea on paper does not exactly mean that the storytelling makes it feel as if it fits in with a particular atmosphere. Also consider that the Japanese completely panned the movie as well, one of the reasons being how western scenes such as this felt.

      @@mr.gentleman2358 Well, the character seems a lot braver in the last battle then when he first starts out. This seems more realistic to the experience one would have when you first go out on an adventure. Since they didn't have time to really explore and devote time to it the comedy was a way to speed things up. Dragon Quest in general has a lighter tone to it so it doesn't seem entirely out of place. It is certainly possible that if the director played the game he didn't notice those contextual clues. Again note the name of the movie Dragon Quest Your Story. Because of the blank slate nature of Dragon Quest one persons experience could be different than another persons. What is Dragon Quest to you is not necessarily what Dragon Quest is to another fan. In that sense the director may have failed to capture what Dragon Quest was to the majority of people.
      Leap in logic, huh? You describe yourself as a mechanics over story person which translates to impersonal logic over personal feelings. Of course everyone uses both of these but people will prefer and be more sensitive to certain things over other things. All that being said, what I said was that was the sense or impression I was getting. I could be wrong. I don't know you and often enough people are not fully aware of themselves and their own shortcomings. So its not exactly a leap in logic. Saying that makes you seem more like a logic type person as well.
      I'd say that Dragon Quest itself leans a lot on what could be called cliches. That is fairytale and fantasy influence. It is well known that Dragon Quest games while trying to do a few things different are much the same from game to game in style, systems, and the like. The "scared to propose" thing makes perfect sense to me. Its not like the character had much of a social life slaving away in that temple. Or perhaps it is referring to the person who is playing the game and his genuine feelings in playing the game. The person himself not having much of a social life. I don't understand what any of you people are expecting this character or person to be considering that it reveals the character to be a person in the real world. The only thing I can think of the anime dbz style art which makes all the heroes look the same (that determined look). gamingbolt.com/super-smash-bros-ultimates-next-dlc-character-is-dragon-quest-11s-luminary

      @@mr.gentleman2358 I could mention how I liked the message of how you should be with the person who you can really talk to. I think that was handled well.
      Ultimately, though, the biggest reason why I like this movie is that it feels like its trying to appeal to the masses. Not necessarily to Dragon Quest fans trying to show people who don't play video games that there is more to them than meets the eye. This is a message I want to send to people as well. I am not the biggest Dragon Quest fan though I am a fan (I have yet to finish IV, V, VI and VII). Dragon Quest VIII is easily my favorite in the series with Dragon Quest XI coming up second (I think). DQVIII in particular is the one I could go on and on about. We didn't get the PS2 version of DQV so all I had to experience it was the SNES repro cart and the NDS. There is something you don't get in experiencing the story in the more 2d version so I didn't feel much for the main character (it has been a while though). I do remember the adventure with Bianca as a kid, the marriage scenes, and then when you find your castle and have kids. The scene where you get turned to stone was pretty good and it was crazy when your kids come to rescue you and then you fight alongside them. But thats all I remember. Oh and there was the first trip to the fairy world. That was cool. But I don't remember much about the main character (perhaps because I was playing the SNES version). So I don't feel like he really had a personality that I could distinguish.

      @@jus4000kicks I don't have much time to debate, and of course, you're free to like the movie, but I'll just leave a few notes on how I feel:
      -A trope and cliche are not the same thing to me. Everything has tropes, but cliches are how you execute them. I feel as if the movie was very cliche, but DQ, despite its use of tropes, does not feel cliche, especially with how it approaches story.
      -I think the talk on fairy tale tropes often come from perceptions in society that come more from osmosis and Disney movies than from actual study of Fairy Tales. I've done a lot of study of the Grimm Brothers' works and in many ways, those stories feel as fresh as ever. I feel as if DQ takes from them more then say, how a lot of western animation companies present them.
      -While yes, I am very gameplay oriented, that doesn't mean i'm not story oriented. After all, I'd like to think I did a pretty decent job analyzing the stories in PS2, DQIV, etc. As far as I can tell, i'm the only one who has covered those stories and even tried to look at their themes on RUclips (though I think there is one other RUclipsr who tried looking at PS2).
      I'd also say my logical views are not in the way of my emotional views. I just want those to be well executed and feel fresh. For example, I really like the romance in the DQV games, especially the remakes. I also would say a romance I appreciate is the one in Lufia II. THAT was definitely one where the theme of being with the person who you're comfortable with was executed quite well.
      I also did say I thought the proposal scene was quite well done in the movie.

      @@mr.gentleman2358 I have a friend who is very logic oriented (a computer geek you might say) and while he certainly is very smart and at the same time motivated by stories (he reads a lot of books) he doesn't seem to understand the subtle emotional elements of characters and in games. He overlooks the more spiritual elements of characters and stories as well as how aesthetics change an experience. He'll talk about good graphics and how advanced the graphics are but ultimately I feel like he doesn't really care about animations as long as they make logical sense. The depth of meaning in a story game and the characters he ultimately doesn't care about. What he cares about is deep mechanics and customization so he can make his character as strong as possible. He looks at video games as games mostly. As a result he now plays mostly MMORPGs. I on the other hand look at them as experiences and artistic masterpieces that reveal deep spiritual truths about life. I see video games not as games but as a blend of story and game or a blend of the art of video and the design of games in order create unique experiences. More experiential stories I guess. I won't even care about the mechanics if I can't get into the story or the characters or the world. In other words, the expressive ability of a game matters to me though I am coming to appreciate a bit more the games of old that imply rather than state everything outright. The art details that reveal more about a character matter to me from the martial art style details to their clothing art style.
      Dragon Quest V has some really interesting ideas in it that I enjoyed and that were fresh. However, the lack of the games expressive ability (of the version I played) hindered it hugely in me connecting to the main character. Keep in mind that I grew up with Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy IV, Secret of Mana and Mystic Quest were the first RPGs I played that I got into and was therefore hooked and continued to seek out similar experiences. Dragon Quest VIII was the first Dragon Quest game I got into and loved hugely still to this day. It had a lot to do with seeing the beautiful 3d world to explore and the expressive characters and voice acting and animations of attacks. The beautiful musical orchestral score was amazing and probably still my favorite of the series.
      Yes, I think you did a very good job of going into detail with the story of PS2 as well as DQIII and all the games you covered (Jury's out on DQIV but I'm not an expert at that game). However, there is one thing all of these games have in common. They are story games more in the lore sense and there are many things that require some imagination to convert the 2dness of the games into a 3d experience for the player. Your analysis's have helped me to understand them much better and help me to do that. You are definitely better than my friend is. You seem much more like Lorerunner who is knowledgeable about design however as he himself admits he misses things in games though he has very interesting insight. He is more of a logical type as well as far as I can tell. That is more my point. Even he has limits to his understanding. Case in point is his Final Fantasy VIII rumination. This is a game I love and could go on and on about. He misses a lot in that game. The real test for your analysis's (for me) is going to be Final Fantasy IV since I know that game quite well, I grew up with it and have watched countless reviews on it realizing many things I didn't know about it. There are design details in FFIV that modern developers should pay attention to as I don't see them in modern games.
