Tobacco Industry's Campaign to Hide the Hazards of Smoking

- From the 1920s to the 1950s, the tobacco industry undertook a marketing campaign to hide the hazards of smoking and lure new consumers to its products. This video combines campaign images and the commentary of Stanford experts to demonstrate key tactics in this strategy. With the number of smoking-related deaths estimated to climb from 100 million in the last century to 1 billion in the 21st century, this retrospect provides insight into the industry's ongoing pursuit of profits at the expense of public health.
I started smoking at age 8 in 1963, the doctors on TV said it would help you in sports and being on the swim team I needed to swim faster. After 50 years of smoking I quit cold turkey and hoping I don't get the c word.
''trust the doctors and scientists''
oldest trick in the book.
Sounds so familiar 🤔 I feel like I've heard this recently.
Exactly!!
PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY IS NO DIFFERENT THEN THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY!
The solution is simple: Don't use any medicines ever.
@@peterpiper7441 i don't! have even taken an aspirin in 10 years, nothing made by man helps man when it comes to medicine!
Dude are you serious. You are fucking stupid
Guess who they are both under?... the government
The pharma asks me to beleive science whereas, the smoking campaign literally said "dont beleive those claims by science". I know what to beleive.
They should play this video in every high school or middle school. If we had more information in videos like this growing up I believe it would deter certain people from starting to smoke.
Who is still starting to smoke in this day and age? The packages say all over them 'this stuff will kill you'.
@@peterpiper7441 Because people like tobacco...
@@peterpiper7441 peer pressure honestly. Most smokers start real young
Gotta be easy on them tho it causes them to rebel and do it because you told them
Not to

Companies like these are one of the reasons why anti-vaccination movement took off in the 2010s.
Maybe some people dont want to inject themselves with synthetic chemicals?
Research SV-40 virus.
Um no. The anti vaccination movement took off when people started researching what ingredients go inside. If you wouldn’t eat it, why would you inject it?

@@mangotree8235 Yeah try eating sodium and clorine seperatly. (Those are the components of table salt)

Yep
t to know im currently quitted smoking for 2 weeks.
How's it going?
@@angusgallagher6130 Started smoking again after 3 months back then. Addiction is harsh.
@@MarshallMathersthe7th Damn. Hope you managed to kick the habit.

@@MarshallMathersthe7thi stopped 2 weeks ago. Stop again untill its too late. Death from tobacco is very painful and tragic.
This is frustrating. All I want to see is the HR (Hazard Rate) of non-smokers, versus cigarette smoker, vs pipe smoker, vs cigar smokers. Finding a study or some reference for this is crazy. I did find something exploring only pipe tobacco (HR for pipe smokers is 1.2), but nothing comparing cigarette smokers. Sure we know it's bad for you, but there's GOTTA be a measurable HR associated to that.
I cannot believe ANYONE smokes anymore....
It only takes a couple of cigs and you are hooked and harder to quit than heroin. Same with vaping nicotine but worse.
@@richardwalter9055"Harder to quite than heroin"? Quitting smoking is difficult especially the longer it has been since one began smoking, but I think "harder to quiet than heroin" is a gross over exaggeration.
Er... didn’t Grant smoke cigars? That picture of DiMaggio sure looked a lot like Babe Ruth.
Unintentional asmr
I can't load the video. They do not want me to see it? I want to learn about marketing campaign to hide hazards.
6:42 bro starts spilling a bit too much beans
Dude bro fart fart
May be same is happening with coffee.... majority of articles about coffee are positive unfortunately
If coffee was a net loss….tea companies would be all over it.
There has been an alarming phenomenon of people swearing off coffee. Anti-coffee impulses have promulgated a devastating health crisis in which we see high levels of heart disease and increasing numbers of adult onset diabetes. One’s denying oneself the enormous benefits attributed to coffee drinking is a self-inflicted risk Americans should not take.
Anyone who seriously believes doctors are honest people had better get a brain scan. These guys come out of Med school owing over $200,000 dollars. Truthful advice is not going to pay that back.
You're an idiot.
Who's here from Quitsure?
Lol...yes! I am! Just had a smoke...watching my best and worst habit laid out before me! Huh...who knew!?
Even though scientists at first thought smoking was a good idea more recent science has actually found that smoking carries with it certain hazards that ought to be taken into consideration before taking it up.
You don't say!
things change overnight at the "speed of science" 😅
Omg REALLY? 🤣
@@thereishope3867 It did take a few years for scientists to conclude that smoking cigarettes is not the best choice for a healthy lifestyle. Smoking probably harmed more people than it helped.

I will say that my grandfather used to smoke unfiltered chesterfields after coming back from WW2. He only smoked for about 12 years and then quit. But he said the unfiltered chesterfields were hands-down the best. He lived to be 91.
Trust us, the science is settled they said!!
Fun fact: Science is a process, it is NEVER settled.

I'm surprised they don't say smoking contributes to global warming
jim cherkas Why should you be surprised? There isn't the slightest evidence that smoking contributes to global warming. But smokers do kill non-smokers by their secondhand smoke.

Martin goode elisha yep and unicorns exist and 9/11 isn’t real and the Lochness monster exists and jfk was an inside job. That’s how you sound, why would you actively ignore medical research trying to help you for an agenda that supports addiction? Tobacco is known to contain multiple carcinogens and tars that with enough consistent build can cause cancers or other infections leading to poor immune systems. The research is all there and there’s a lot of it man.
@@martinlovegoodie You think that might have something to do with the lifestyle? Hunting. Fishing. Walking like 10 miles a day. Eating all fresh food.
I call you out sir grant did smoke a pipe once in a while but what caused his throat cancer was him smoking 20 CIGARS A DAY. The 1964 surgeon general report states " pipe smokers live on average three years longer than non smokers." i know this as my great great uncle smoked a pipe everywhere he went he died at age 106. You really shouldn't lie you better try harder next time you attack pipe smoking.
Devin Petersen ok, but you don’t inhale cigars! The smoke doesn’t go down your throat into your lungs. You can get mouth cancer from it though
