- Labour has promised to deliver the biggest shake-up of the railways "in a generation" putting what it called a "broken model" back on track towards public ownership.
But the proposals have been attacked by the Conservatives, who have claimed Labour has no plan to pay for them.

Finally these rail operators will no longer be able to rip us off with ludicrous rail fares.
Why should the tax payer subsidise your fair?
@@T5Zplayer it’s an essential service the state should provide like mostly every other country in the developed world.
@@gogosegaga Why should the tax payer subsidise your fair? At what cost? Can you quantify, let alone justify your comments.
@gogosegaga instead of a private rail operator charging ludicrous fares, it will be a state-owned one. Does anyone expect Starmer to be substantially different from Rishi? 😂
It’s better to be able to blame a government for bad practice and ripping us off as they can be voted out. Rather than foreign companies and private equities who own the train networks at present and getting away with robbery.
This gets my vote. I cannot put in to words just how much I despise private British railways. For context, I've lived and worked in Spain where I was able to buy 10 journeys for 10 euros (each journey taking 30 mins) and this was in Barcelona - one of the richest areas of Spain. I've lived in Germany and it's much more reasonable there also.
There is absolutely not reason to adhere to this failed Tory experiment any longer, no other nation on earth has this ridiculous model where private owners hoover up both profits and taxpayers money.
Tell us about these profits that are being hoovered up?
Pint of what you've drinking please.
Totally agree! Our rail system and fairs are a joke!
@@jeanettekruger6577 Nope
YEP. cope Tory boy. @@T5Zplayer
The part of the system that makes the vast bulk of any profits are the rolling stock leasing companies….Labour will leave them in private hands 🤷♂️
My hope is they just stop leasing from them as they build up a cache of their own rolling stock. Use the ROSCO's as a stop gap while they fix things longer term. A lot of the fleets need replacing right now anyway and more will need it in the not too distant future. They should just replace them and buy the things outright as and when they need new rolling stock. It'd be nice if they could just take those into public ownership too, but that isn't really cost effective. Just using them less and less as time goes on, like how they're going to just let the franchises expire and take them back into public ownership will let things naturally wind down and save money, and not reward these greedy companies with masses of tax payer money to buy out their stock at inflated costs.
@@TalesOfWar Love the story, but you neatly skip over the cost to the tax payer.
are they nationalising it? I know it was inefficient when it was publically owned but it was also much cheaper for travel, right now its inefficient AND expensive...and still publically funded
It really wasn't. It was one of the most efficiently run rail networks in the world and one of the most reliable. It was just run down and poorly funded towards the end because the Tories wanted to sell it off. They're doing the same with the NHS right before our very eyes, so they can turn around and say it can only be fixed by making it private. It won't.
The government needs to make rail travel affordable for everyone. Compared to other coumtries, we are a huge joke!
EU operators receive billions in subsidies from the tax payer. The EU market has many advantages over the UK such as size, mix of revenue sources, but still need bailing out in billions. Just remind me which operators bought carriages that were too wide for their tunnels?
Don't be daft, we're A petri dish of convincibility and denial for the rich and corrupt in order to see how far humanity can be pushed until their breaking point, so we can be maximally exploited , as is our deserving of A weak society who couldn't conserve their generational gains, until we take it back into our own working hands of course, doubt that's seriously happening anymore
Train operation is a bad business regardless of whether it is run by a private company or the state.
its not a business if its state run. Its a service.
@@r200tiservices can be privatised like law firms. It should be nationalised because transport is a feature of civilised living, like the public sector or education.
It's critical infrastructure for the benefit for the wider economy. We don't have this backwards, limited thinking when it comes to building roads. ALL critical infrastructure should be owned by the state, OR VERY heavily regulated. Japan is a brilliant example of the latter. Much of their transport network is privately run, but the government keep them in line.
The Tories can shut up with their predictable nonsense about where the money's going to come from, frankly. We should be asking them where the money has come from to pay for these private companies' shareholder dividends this whole time
Ah….the ‘shareholder dividend’ myth. Most rail companies make less that 2% profit, if that.
It the same policy as the Tories current have. Even the same name.
@@Bungle-UK🤣next joke
Amen!
@@Bungle-UK Yeah, because they funnel it to shareholders. Most of it is subsidies from the tax payer by the way. They get paid regardless of providing a service or not.
Do not allow government to run anything. Do we never learn.
'cause the Tories have been miles better........at running anything
Labour has to come out with something don't they
They made this pledge ages ago, before the Tories announced "Great British Railways" (dumb name, just call it British Rail), they're just re-announcing it with more details on how they'll go about doing it and closer to the election. Whenever that may end up being.
In a generation means never. Utter bs.
Network Rail are very unhappy about this forward thinking by general members of the public
Just get ready for continuous strikes and the railways coming to a halt
trains aren't actually that bad, its the cost of tickets... look at LNER, it's publicly owned... services are pretty fair, but cost is extortionate
This is such bad journalism. Jesus.
Starmer and Labour constantly u-turning devoid of ideas, suddenly decide to go back to the abysmal past failure of state-run,
nationalised railways...which were an abysmal failure back in the grim days of 70's socialism.
Surely hiring more people and spending more would stimulate economy and give people good paying jobs ? Like when they say US Ukraine aid is stimulating American economy ??
Big shake up🤣I'll believe it,when i see it.
Like the railway network is the most important.
I don't see any sense in carrying on paying to keep toc share prices up, but i don't see sense in reducing what the government gives either. We need better more efficient railways to reduce our dependency on road transport, railways managed efficiently and money spent wisely with no private companies siphoning the money off. Sadly we get what we deserve and nobody can agree where not to spend the money, but for too many years the railways had little investment and were left with a system choked with bottlenecks and poor routes. I would like to see nationalisation but run by people who know railways, buisiness minded people, but all money channelled back into the railways with a constant view of improvement and cost reduction.
Dreamland. All state owned railways are subsidised
@@T5Zplayer exactly

Stupid idea. Just following the Trotsky bidding of TUCfilth
Keep crying about it tory boy.
@@Morning404 Is that the best you can come out with?
God help us…….labour cannot run the country let alone the railway network. What about the housing crisis….the help for the NHS
Etc etc …..bad idea….we will all suffer from this….any more bright ideas Labour……🙄🙄🤮🤬🤬
Hardly, they are centralising ticketing.
Another tax hole
It'll probably be cheaper than the current system. We pay more now since privatisation than when it was British Rail thanks to the subsidies the operators get.
