Yeah, because as a layperson I have no idea how technically good something is. My sense is that Courtney’s spiritbox stuff is unbelievably good. I mean it’s literally hard for me to believe. And to hear a pro confirm this is helpful. It allows me to understand what I’m seeing better.
The way Courtney ends this performance with the oscillation of screaming and singing “this could all be yours” is so much more powerful and passionate than the studio track. It literally gives me goosebumps every time.

This one take performance outshines the studio version by far. The switch between melody and distortion at the end is amazing.
I agree I think this is the better version of the song, this is the way she sings it live at shows. The studio version has layered vocals for the ending, one track clean the other scream, which would be harder to do live (she would have to pick which layer she would sing and which would be a backing track, and then timing everything correctly); so in order to make things easier for live shows she just switches between clean and scream for the ending.

To be honest with you the end of this performance with the double time feel and her fry scream / cleans brings tears to my eyes the same way the massive chord change in Beethoven’s 9th mvt IV … where the full chorus shifts on “Vor Gott” before the little street band section ..
Exactly! It brings tears to my eyes and gives me chills every. Single. Time. The only other song I can think of that hits me that hard every time I hear it is Riddle of Steel/Riders of Doom by Basil Poledouris from the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack, where it transitions about 3:30 in.

Her work with IWRESTLEDABEARONCE is some of the most astounding female vocal ever recorded with one of the wildest bands to ever be recorded. Highly recommend

Her vocals and stage command stole the whole show for me.
if you see interviews of her, courtney has a bit of a deeper voice compared to what's typical for females, which helps give her really nasty lows when she's doing distorted vocals. it's very cool because the clean singing is so sweet in comparison
Her singing isn't that high either. I really love her tone and style, but her singing is not high at all.
I always say her voice is smooth as molasses.
She has such smoothness to the singing that balances it. Comparatively as a man with a really deep voice, I’m am lows, gutturals, and bass singing all day. 😂
Her range is mostly alto, but sometimes reaches into the soprano range. Still impressive, and her talking voice is definitely lower than singing, but that’s pretty common amongst performers.

What people sadly don't bring up or suggest is the band she and her husband were in before founding Spiritbox iwrestledabearonce. She goes deeper with her growls and vocals. And it's the band she was a fan of after hearing the original singers vocie and what she said in an interview made he want to try and do screaming vocals. Definitely would be interesting to see a reaction to a different version of Courtney

seen Spiritbox twice live and they have blown me away both times, the instrumentalists coupled with Courtney's vocals is spectacular, love seeing you get so excited over a vocalist i love so much
It’s interesting that you mentioned Evanescence because I will never forget hearing Amy Lee for the first time, and this was right before Bring Me to Life took over the world. Since then, I have never connected with a female singer in the same way.
This was the first song I ever heard from Spiritbox, and I played it on loop, feeling like I was floating every time I heard it. For what it’s worth, she has turned me on to the screaming vocals because it melds so well with her singing and the dream like grit of the music.
I can’t get enough, and I would love to see them live ASAP!
I had the chance to see her live a couple of weeks ago. They played before Korn and she absolutely killed it! (never heard of Spiritbox before I went to the concert)

thats not something music does for me very often, and i think this is probably a strange one to have it happen with to most people. i think i just dont know how else to react to such an immense talent. the controlled screams in those last two lines of "this could all be yours" right at the end get me almost every time. she's just unreal.

Great video, I learned a lot from the analysis. I don’t know why, but every time I hear that incredible bit at the end, tears just pop out my eyes. Doesn’t matter if I’m listening to the song or watching a reaction video. Something about it just plucks an emotional string. A performance unlike anything else. Gotta marvel not just at the talent, but also the power of music to do something to us
I mentioned this exact thing in another comment, but that part is one of the few that gets me every single time. The only other song with a part that does that to me is about 3:30 into Riddle of Steel/Riders of Doom by Basil Poledouris on the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack. The entire soundtrack is a banger, but that song just fuckin WRECKS me every time.

There are a BUNCH of reactions to this song. It pretty much split the fandom in two when it came out. Gatekeeping in music, especially Metalcore, can be toxic.
THis and Julia Nilon's reaction are the best
Ah I love this. Her speaking voice is basically where mine sits & yeah I've found it easier to get low growls vs the high screams. She really uses her whole face/ head while making sounds at the right time. Top vocalist for sure
So this has probably been said already but in the studio version she sings high notes through that ending. I love the screams and quick switch to cleans back and forth in this one. Great reaction!🤘🤘

Spiritbox is so damn good. I love this song and the entire album it's off, Eternal Blue, so much that I'm still a bit salty they didn't win the Juno for it. There's something so entrancing about Courtenay's cleans, like you could sink into them or something, which only highlights the harsh sections even more. She's so good.

Yeah, I usually don't like when bands mix cleans and harsh vocals (dunno why, I'd just rather they did one or the other. It's just an odd personal preference), and if they do mix em I tend to prefer more harsh vocals. But with Spiritbox I'm more than happy to just lose myself in Courtney's clean vocals as much as her distorted ones. Absolutely amazing.

Seeing them perform live is really a treat too. One of the best performances that I have been to, just watch out for the spontaneous mosh pits. I had one break out right next to me and got blind sided and knocked to the ground, not fun in your late 40's. LOL

I've been with you over the years and I still just love you. Your hair right now is just mmmph fire! I love it! As a metalhead that goes from doing gutterals in my truck to bands like Primitive Man to singing to indy bands, I would LOVE your take on the band Young the Giant. Check out the "Apartment (open air)" video where they literally record from a camera mic outside and just bask in the glory.

Saw them here in Anaheim a couple months back. Probably one of the best performances from them I have ever seen. @Bethroars you really need to react to their song CONSTANCE. Such an emotional song and video. Research what it’s about first. I cannot watch it without tears. And Courtney’s singing is on a different level too. But the song is very special for so many reasons.

Beth, you forgot to mention the other current female metal singer who can transition instantly and seamlessly between awesome scream/growl harsh vocals and beautiful clean singing…Tatiana from Jinjer! I discovered Spiritbox at about the same time as Jinjer near the end of last year and I love both bands. I recently got a ticket to see Jinjer live at the House of Blues in Boston on November 20’th and I’m psyched!
You’re right. Courtney‘s voice is just a tad bit smoother and more soothing though so it gets a bit more shocking when she goes into the growls.
@@Rosannasfriend Both Courtney and Tatiana have great clean singing and scream/growl harsh vocals, but they definitely have different styles. Courtney's clean singing is quieter, breathy and ethereal and Tatiana has a more full-on bluesy tone to her clean singing. Regarding the harsh vocals, Courtney's many times sound almost like a mix of clean and harsh and Tatiana's sound very guttural and deep most of the time.
Thanks for taking my suggestion. Her clean vocals and particularly her melodic sense remind me of modern country, which makes for such a great contrast when she goes distorted.We reviewed this album on my music podcast a couple weeks ago and my co-host, who hadn't heard the band before, refused to accept that the same person was doing the clean and distorted vocals. I sent him this video to prove it. Of course, we'll be reviewing Jinjer next.
Tati from Jinjer is awesome as well. Her growls seem more "technical" to me. The kind that make you want to bear someone up. Courtney's seem more "desperate" to me. The kind that make you want to hide in the corner. The end of Hysteria and the mara effect really give me those feelings.

@@johnhmaloney I've listened to metal for a long time. Started with Pantera's Fare Beyond Driven when I was really young, and Spiritbox just really hits my sweet spot of melody, atmosphere and aggression. I'd have to say Courtney and Chino from Deftones have a similar effect on my ears. Noah from Bad Omens is quickly joining that list as well.
As a fan of heavier music she's different..kind of the calm within the storm if that makes sense..just so calming and relaxing in this music
My favorite song of theirs.
It was so cool of her to change it from the studio version and throw those quick switches in at the end. Really shows her talent. I wish their earlier songs would get more attention though, the prog elements were my favorite sound for them and Courtney is a monster on songs like The Beauty of Suffering.
However, I have to ask, could the way she sings "fire" at 4:26 could have been a mistake? It sounds almost choked, and while I don't think it sounds bad, I don't know if she actually would want it to sound that quiet in an ideal performance.
You pointing out that she was rapidly switching between screaming and singing at the bridge was also fascinating to me, because I've seen others describe it as just a unique aspect of her scream, that she can give it pitch. She's doing it so seamlessly and naturally that I feel like she has to still be using her scream technique. But what do I know, I'm not her...
You should reaaaaaally check out Justin Bonitz of Tallah. I recommend his one take live performance of "Overconfidence", absolutely insane switching between vocal styles.

Man I wonder how you’d like Iwrestledabearonce? They’re way more experimental than Spiritbox but their original singer Krysta Cameron was the queen of harsh/clean vocal mixes back in the day! She’s my favorite metal singer of all time. Check out their song The Cats Pajamas if you get the chance, even if it’s not a reaction and just on your own time, you might really dig it!
There's a lot of similarities in her cleans to the female vocalists found in modern electronic music (EDM, Liquid, House etc). Vocalists such as Emily Harkness, Katy B, Karen Harding, Becky Hill, Rosie Francis etc. There's a certain ethereal coolness to these types of vocals that are really appealing no matter what the genre. Courtney's fry vocals give her that rough edge and it sounds amazing.
I love how she attacks the mic when she bellows.
I have to agree with Elizabeth Zoroff here it is reminiscent of Corey Taylor how she flips it on a dime.
It's flipping a mental switch, taking a very deep breath and broadcasting from the diaphragm. AHHHHHHH!

Metallica has enough awards and has been in the HOF for over a decade.
72 seasons is a great song and album.
I'd love to see Spiritbox get the Grammy.
However it usually boils down to album sales.
How awesome would it be to see Metallica give Spiritbox a big push by opening a few tour dates for them.
Five Finger Death Punch opens for Metallica.
I predict that Spirtbox if they keep putting out this kind of quality music will be in the HOF themselves.
