  • Will Self discusses his novel, "Phone", at Politics and Prose on 2/10/18.
Self’s Booker-shortlisted Umbrella was a dazzling stream of consciousness that introduced the unconventional, but probably brilliant, psychiatrist Zach Busner. Its sequel, Shark, was a wild fever dream of a book that followed Busner as he opened, and attempted to run, an experimental residential center. Now Self concludes the trilogy with a novel set in the digital age, one that, fittingly, reads like a data stream. Beset by the twin demons of too much information and Alzheimer’s, Busner is struggling not to lose his mind. Meanwhile, in a parallel story line, the cryptic Jonathan De’Ath, aka The Butcher, negotiates a complicated relationship with Colonel Gawain Thomas, a tank commander.

I could listen to Mr Self reading the back of a cat litter bag (compliment!) . . . brilliant. thanks for uploading. Really enjoy your videos. Will, if you happened to read this - consider a (very long) unabridged audio version of the trilogy - if you had nothing else to do . . .

I thought about driving in from Louisville, Kentucky for this. I now wish that I had as I haven't seen Will do a reading since I was living in New York and "Umbrella" just had just come out. (And he doesn't come to colonies often.)
Hope to see him again in the not-too-distant future.

Will Self is fantastic and a phenomenal writer, articulate and wise but he is also often full of shit. I think that'a fair loving assessment. I love him, especially this trilogy.

I think if someone can read a 300 page + novel and understand it and enjoy it and remember the story line to it for years later, and do the same for many 300 + page novels, remembering the characters and story to all of them for years later, then that is GENIUS!
I can read, what I have a problem with his putting the words along the sentences in a way that makes understandings and meanings in my brain.
      Enjoy your Summer, Lex!
      With Best Wishes!
      Cheers - Mike.

Lex Wick Self's books are a fucking drudge. I threw his last one away. He has zero ability to connect emotionally, just a load of word wank.
