  • USAA was once known for its stellar treatment of customers, and Clark has been a USAA member since the 1970s. But recently, we’ve received several complaints from readers, listeners, and callers about USAA’s lack of customer service. Now, members are saying that the company is doing little to help protect their accounts from hackers. Clark reviews the issues and shares if he is planning to leave USAA as a customer. Also, Morgan Stanley was just in the news because the giant is being sued for paying customers such poor rates. Clark explains why it’s so important to avoid big banks and where you should put your savings instead.‌
Plus, Christa shares your #AskClark questions and Clark gives his take. All this and more on the July 8, 2024, episode of The Clark Howard Show.

I left USAA after 37 years to horrible customer service.

The USAA issue is real. They used to have the very best rates, and that’s no longer the case. And customer service has tanked, especially the insurance dept, when dealing with a claim.

USAA has lost its way. They spend millions, maybe billions, in advertising yet their rates keep going up and their interest rates on checking and savings accounts are abysmal. I’m shifting all my money to Navy Federal Credit Union which gets a much higher customer satisfaction rating and pays much higher rates on accounts. Time for a major shakeup from the top down.

Left USAA after more than 40 years. They couldn’t deal with a simple revocable trust. Moved everything to my Credit Union 8 years ago. I’ve written multiple letters of complaint to USAA president. They are just another mega big bank. Interest rates are horrible to boot.

USAA annually increases homeowners insurance based on assumed increases in personal belongings that are absurd. I had to call them every year to lower my coverage and increase my deductible, and then have an escrow review done with Wells Fargo to keep my mortgage payments about the same as the year prior.
Clark hit the nail on the head that capitalism only works when interests are aligned. When they're not, it's all a cash grab that disaffects the customer. That's where USAA is now and why after they screw you, they say, "Thank you for being a member for X number of years" to make you feel that making a wise decision to bank elsewhere means you're destroying some deep relationship with the bank. Oh, please.

They raised my rates $1500/year because of a speeding ticket I got in a speed trap. I've been with them for 5 years and have never had an accident or claim. I'm paying as much a month as my teenage son who has had an accident!

Vanguard is getting to be like that, too, now that Mr. Bogle passed away. It seems like all businesses of any kind have become disrespectful of their customers, just using them for quick turn on investment. They all have also treated their employees horribly for years. We are scraping the bottom of the barrel; soon the barrel will be completely empty and that will be a crisis point.

My last time banking with a big bank, they suddenly doubled the price of a safety deposit box. So I go in to talk with them. "All of our competitors are doing it." "Really, how about the bank across the street (a smaller regional bank)" "we don't consider them a competitor". Smug, arrogant, I emptied my box, closed my account and left.

Went to a USAA-approved shop for accident repairs. The shop collected $3K for installing a new exhaust system. I checked under the care. Not installed and when I demanded the receipts, the shop admitted they never even ordered the part. USAA's response when I asked to take the car elsewhere - "We have to give them a chance to correct the error." An amazing response to outright fraud.

It is a chilling sign that USAA is now hiring former Wells Fargo executives: "The company also hired Mani Sulur, previously executive vice president and control executive for the consumer lending businesses at Wells Fargo, to be chief risk officer for USAA Federal Savings Bank. Both executives are based in USAA's new Charlotte, North Carolina, office."

USAA made my family's life pure hell after the passing of our loved one. We had to jump through multiple loops in the process of closing accounts of our loved one. USAA made the process painful compared to other banking institutions. It seemed as though the right hand had no clue as to what the left hand was doing. Our entire family has served in the military, but you couldn't pay us to do business with USAA again 😡🤬😡🤬.....

After taking most of a substantial amount of business away from USAA, I got a call from a "President's Representative." She had absolutely no interest in my issues or what I had to say. A joke. Total bunker mentality.
But sadly, the worst part about USAA is the way that they prey on lower ranking service members. Shame on them.

We were proud to say we are members, but if our recent experience is a sign of where they are headed...count me out. It used to be the very best of the best. It's looking more and more like those days are over.

My wife and I have been USAA members since the 1980s. Over the last several months we have been gradually moving all our banking business to Fidelity, and we are almost done. We recently moved all of our Vanguard business there as well. We sure could use some advice for where to move our insurance, but the initial comparison from other insurers was no better than USAA.

Member since 1963. Have watched with sadness a steady, then rapid decline in service and corporate attitude particularly the last 15 years. Claims and policy service is slow, unreliable and frustrating. The phone wait time, the annoying music feed, are unacceptable. The online site is a steam engine and usually fails to”unable to complete, contact rep”. And no-one answers phone. Moved money out years ago. Looking for insurance alternative. Very disappointed, formally was best around.

We have not had any problems with USAA Bank. I can see why others might have. USAA's efforts to grow into a major bank have outpaced their ability to maintain the high level of customer support they had when servicing a smaller customer base. The current senior leadership is not as dedicated to the military clientele as previous leaders with actual military experience.

Fact. 2023 USAA raised insurance rates twice (each 6mo term) 17+% each time. In 2022 they took a 1.3B loss. In 2023, CEO/President Wayne Peacock's salary went from 4.8M to 8.1M.
When trying to get information about the increase, employees would state "insurance rates are higher in Florida". But yet, rates in 2024 only went up about 4% and everyone, not just Florida, went up about 17% each term. It took some digging to discover the truth about the losses and employees will deny that the losses was the reason for increase.
Still trying to figure out how a CEO warrants such a large compensation increase after such a considerable loss.

23:10 I've been a USAA member since '73 and left the Navy as LCDR. I was considering a checking account with them since I have had ALL our insurance with them for over 50 years. After viewing your vids, I deferred that decision. I have, in recent years, noticed a trend with USAA's customer service towards more automation and difficulty in speaking with a human being. CEO, Wayne Peacock's 2023 salary was over $8 million, a 60% increase over 2022. That, likely, suggests the current priorities of USAA. I don't know if he even SERVED in the military (I see no Service or Rank on his Biography). In addition, the 24:43 USAA bank was fined $15 million and has recently hired Wells Fargo Execs...as you may recall, WF created thousands of customer accounts without the knowledge of the customers just so they could charge fees. In the mid '70s my car was stolen and recovered 29 days later in 4 feet of salt water. I was unhappy with the repairs that USAA authorized so I called the office of the CEO ( a retired Admiral); he, personally, called me back. That's not likely to happen these days.

Had an issue back in 2020, someone used my account and took $5k i only got half of it back and they accused me of writing a check in Arizona when i never lived in Arizona or went there. I was found to be not at fault but they couldn’t “find” the other 2.5k. And a year after usaa got sued by the federal govt for not reporting fraud which is super sketchy. I have been switching to NFCU, if NFCU got auto insurance they’d wipe USAA 🤷‍♂️
Also, safelite through usaa just tried to charge me for $300 for a windshield on a honda accord, i canceled it and took it to a dude who did my windshield for $200. Insurance and banking right now is a mess

Loved USAA for years. BUT they raised their rates outrageously, I felt. I changed to another company and my bill went down $70 per month (auto, home). Dropping USAA was HELL as they would not just cancel it as I asked repeatedly. They were great when I was involved in a four car accident, not my fault, and the driver at fault was underinsured. USAA had to take over and pay $3-4000. They told me the rate would not go up because of the accident but it did.

Member for 28 years and Bank employee with them for 3 years. The bank was an absolute clusterfook. They are an insurance company with a banking hobby. They are still using the same antiquated system they’ve had for 30 years. They had great benefits but base pay was absolute garbage. Anyone with any banking acuity leaves to go to a real bank. They had managers and directors in mortgage they moved over from insurance. Sad to see what has happened to a once great company to do business with.

They are horrible when an accident involves 2 USAA insured. Back in 2018 Someone changed lanes and hit my car. We pulled over and he said “I didn’t see you”. I took photos we exchanged information and I called USAA. He also had called and lied about who was at fault and the location of the accident. I had meta data from the photos that proved the location. They said that each of us would cover our own deductible because we had different stories. He had no damage I had $1800. F250 vs Mazda Miata. I sent them the proof of location and they said they would not side with either one. He lied about the location and I had photos proving he lied. To me that proves he wasn’t being honest about the accident. So he got off Scott free and I had to pay a $500 deductible.

Yes, indeed, be careful with financial advisors. I'm acquainted with a well-to-do "financial advisor" who once pitched me whole life insurance. I showed him, with specific examples and figures, that it was better for me to buy term life and invest the savings. He left confused and came back with his boss. After again showing them my numbers, the boss gave up and walked out. Now decades later, my acquaintance is the "boss" and teaches new college grads how to pitch this garbage to friends' parents and parents' friends. He lives in a big house, drives luxury cars and takes fancy vacations - all because his clients are paying too much for the death benefit on their life insurance and accepting below market returns on their investments. It's just sad.

I worked there almost 20 years. They have gone really downhill from when I started there. A problem is their CEO is the first non-military CEO ever. They have issues with compliance especially in banking. I still have accounts there but have been opening another account with a credit union. When I answered the phones I would hear several customers complain to me especially about the claims even though I didn't work in claims. I had a auto claim a couple of years ago that was taken care of well. I think it was probably due to both of us having USAA and they couldn't argue about paying it. They used to treat their employees better and have reduced retirement benefits and adding more benefits to.attract younger people. They also used to be very conservative and now have gone to more a woke organization.

You beat me to it, but specifically growth vs service is the issue. When I joined USAA I had to have either 2 or 3 three years of military service completed first and I learned about it from other airmen. There were no multi-million dollar USAA NFL ads back then. That way, they knew you're a reliable entity who they can devote the money saved on publicity and overhead to. This was the antidote to dealing with mega-banks.
Then one year USAA allowed civilians to run for board members (and then voting for board members disappeared soon after the civilians came onboard).
Then anyone who ever served could join USAA. What does that mean? Anyone who was drafted and served a questionable 12 months can join? The people who were told you can go to jail or go to Vietnam can join? The people who were separated early in technical training for noncompliance to standards can join?
Also, lowering the ATM fee rebates from $15 to $10/month around the time NFL player Ron Gronkowski started doing ads on TV for I'm sure a huge sum was a gut punch to see. Here's the BetPlay, chronic gambling addiction promoter, posing as the ambassador to military members for banking wisdom.
I'm living overseas right now, not with the military as I'm retired and my three ATM withdrawals per month easily break the $10 rebate maximum and generate about $18/month in foreign transacion fees. The nightmare of tracking a replacement debit card's shipping status on the USAA app was gut wrenching, and I sure was glad I already withdrew cash because as soon as I mentioned an unrecognized charge my card was canceled.
Speaking of this, read your debit card's terms and conditions closely. Your card can be canceled at any time, for any reason with no notice, so you'd better have two banks, two debit cards and a gangster wad of cash (go right up to the $9,999.99 non declaration limit) as you may very well need it. Whatever diversified approach you have to banking is better than relying solely on USAA or any other so-called "Super Bank." Today, those are just legends, not realities.

@SteelbeastsCavalry I bet Tom Brady wanted too much money 💰 or just turned USAA down because he doesn't need the publicity assist, so USAA went to Brady's pet teammate Ron Gronkowski instead. He even took him to Tampa Bay with him, how cute.

In one segment, Clark recommends using a “fiduciary” and in the very next segment, illustrates how the word doesn’t guarantee that a financial advisor will act in your best interest. The advisor touting these fee-rich products most likely IS a fiduciary on paper, having fulfilled all the requirements to call themself that, but what’s the recourse for the client who discovers it’s untrue? How do they report the advisor and what’s the process for having a fiduciary designation revoked?

I believe every state has a regulatory agency and where you can make complaints.

    • @Clark
      @Clark  13 дней назад +1

The key is doing the research and reading the fine print. There are several websites you can use to check their credentials, customer complaints and compensation model. Also ask for Form CSR. It will contain any disclosures about compensation. Lastly, anybody can put "fiduciary" on their marketing materials and sales pitches. You want to read through the terms and conditions, as well as any contract you sign to confirm they are actually a fiduciary.
If you find that a fiduciary was not working in your best interest, you can file a complaint with SEC.gov. The SEC can take disciplinary action against them. 💚

No reason to use a fintech company with the recent problems. Just go directly to the individual bank or just buy mmf from your broker. The problem as I understand it is that these intermediary fintech would pool the money and all the actual bank knows is that this fintech company has X millions in the account, Not the thousands of individuals names and balances. When the fintech company goes bust and all the workers go home.. no one to access the thousands of accounts and balances.

    • @Clark
      @Clark  12 дней назад +1

@bagsandlifestyle Determining the proper term length and coverage amount for your life insurance policy is part art and part science, governed mostly by common sense.
Let’s say you’re buying term life insurance to ensure your children are taken care of in case you die unexpectedly. But your children are 18 and headed to college and you expect to retire in five years. In that case, you probably don’t need a 30-year policy. A 10-year policy would give you excellent coverage.
Also layer in your life expectancy. Do you have a chronic illness that may cut your life short? Or do several people in your family live well into their 90s? If you decide that 20 years is your "magic number," it's best to buy the full 20-year term upfront because premiums remain the same throughout the duration of the policy. If you do 10 now and 10 later, you run the risk of a rate increase at renewal. 💚
