That ollie over the hedge in his part in Future Primitive just blew me away. I was 15 and could barely ollie. Kids nowadays laugh at it but that was the beginning of it all. One of the most stylish skaters I’ve ever seen.
I remember getting my first Guerrero deck one morning back in '88 at a skate shop on 2nd Street in Long Beach. They had just freshly paved the street out in front of my house and I couldn't wait for it to dry. As soon as it did, I went and skated down the street for the first time on that deck feeling alive. I can still smell the fresh pavement!
I was lucky enough to grow up skating in San Francisco and skated with Tommy G a few times. One of the smoothest riders I've ever seen. I remember the Sundays at Golden Gate Park skating with Tommy. Even headed to the McDonalds at Stanyan as a group with him. Awesome dude.
I skated in 80's & 90's as a teenager and still do today. But I never undertood Tommy Guerrero's style.. *He didn't evolve in a similar fashion to say Ray Barbee or Eric Dressen.. (my last deck was the Oldman Guerrero reissue. I loved it! not a TG hater just.....
This f'n guy right here is who I emulated when ever I touched a board and hit the street. He drew the sickest lines for blocks. now that I think about it. When these guys stopped making videos I think that's when I stopped skateboarding. Got back in to when I watched the Z-Boys documentary. Oh and watching Sergio yuppie got me stoked.
I had a Tommy board! indy 159's and I think rat bone wheels. Great street deck. One of the best Ollie decks I've ridden. The other great Ollie boards I've had are a Gonz and a Natas(tiger, SMA) board.
The thing with Stacy's editing is that although it is cinematically superior, it doesn't showcase the true technical ability nor catalogue of their riders, especially the street ones.
Yeah, you could say it was just luck or whatever, but if you had to skate against Tommy G in a street contest back in the day, you would see what's up. I like the still pic with Orb and Mick...ha ha...epic.
It's pretty funny now to look at those kids back then (me, basically) and remember how "proper society" thought we were soooo freeking scary - lol - we were puppy dogs!
Tommy was the first dude i saw in a skate video, that was really streetskating-good-i'm pretty sure that he was the one who "invented" Ollie Airs from launch ramps, like he is doing in the Animal chin video...)...a well placed Legend Award...)... X .
we are all human beings and all that all equal and thats amazing................ but to see brown boys just ripping man ...makes me emotional sk8or die. Gerrero for life.
you guys are nuts. you guys werent there or werent into skating or werent born yet or something. tommy gurrero was a street ripper. an early one. him amd a handful of others were the only ones not on a half pipe or freestyle deck dping this shit.
"Did you throw yourself into the concrete 3,000 fing times? There's no luck involved." Love lines like that. That's REAL.
