    The Fijians' pride in their culture shines through in the performances and interactions with the tourists you showed. Although it was another at work, you could tell they were genuinely proud to share their traditions and Pacific Islander culture.

      Hello just wondering what your opinion is on Terence McKenna’s views about culture not being your friend? The reason I ask is because someone like Big Gabe really doesn’t follow a culture. He’s a brilliant genius who has an open and high class personality allowing him to literally represent the best energy coming out of North America! There’s no one else that can do what he does as long as they’re glued to Capitalistic tendencies in the communities in which they reside. Gabe might be the love alien ❤😊

    • @nicholasbartonlaw341
      @nicholasbartonlaw341 Год назад

      @@jksezhey1 I agree on Gabe! With regard to McKenna, I think McKenna unfairly discounts that we can appreciate and understand a distinctly different culture while being firmly entrenched within our own--after all this is both the allure and purpose of tourism. Culture is a friend as provides many with a source of income (for food and shelter) through their sharing by working in tourism, thereby helping them get off the first rung of Mazlov's Hierarchy of Needs so they can move on to the next rungs toward self-fulfillment.

    • @jksezhey1
      @jksezhey1 Год назад

      @@nicholasbartonlaw341 interesting perspective! I still lean towards the concept that any culture is dangerous for global harmony. I know it’s a tough pill to swallow. I’ve experienced every culture to rob an individual of individualism. Mob rule is why there’s conflict in the world.

    Fiji has two sides to it, just like Maldives. There is a tourism side with the resort islands and hotels and then there is Nadi, if you really want to get a feel of the average Fijian and life there. Most people just go hang out in resorts and never see the regular Fiji, just like people do in Maldives.

    My great great grandfather's first cousin (born 1839 in Lincolnshire, England) ran away to sea and it now appears he settled in Fiji, in the town of Levuka (then the capital of Fiji) on Ovalau, an island off the other side of Viti Levu. He had a daughter there in 1868 or 1869 and through her marriage to a Filipino there are descendants living there and in NZ to this day.
    It must have been quite a boom town at the time, with cotton plantations taking advantage of the US Civil War and a gold rush too. Levuka is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
    I'd love to go there some day. It looks like it's slowly falling apart, with many old buildings, some of which have been burned by arsonists.

    We took a longboat ride for about an hour to visit a school in a remote village in one of the many islands. It was the most amazing experience-they really value education and treat educators like royalty. When we first arrived, you could hear the students singing at the top of their lungs as we walked from building to building and their voices have stayed with me for many years. We picked up blue starfish all around the island. They live a simple life but truly value their family and tradition.

    Bula: Pronounced 'boo-lah', it is by far the most common greeting. It means 'hello' but can also be used in a number of permutations as shown below. Ni sa bula/Ni sa bula Vinaka: The first can be used as a more formal greeting. The latter extends on 'bula' and wishes the person good health and life.

    Gabe, one of the most disorienting experiences of my life occurred in Fiji when I went snorkeling. I was hugging the shoreline for about an hour when I came up, looked toward the beach and saw a hotel that was exactly, precisely like the one I was staying at. Turns out the island was so small that in an hour of hugging the shoreline i had circled and arrived back at where I started.

We booked a cheap boat ride in the town, to go to Mana Island for a few days. Small boat picked us up outside smugglers cove beach. Mana Island is lovely, the beach on the far side of it is paradise. Plus it was usually empty. Highly recommended.

    Wow, I've never been to Fiji. I've been to thirty something other countries but I've never been next door. Speaking of next door to Australia, may I suggest also visiting Vanuatu for a much more pure Melanesian experience. It has been said that Vanuatu is the happiest nation on earth and I would believe it.
    Another place for the intrepid traveler looking for an un-spoilt paradise would be EAST NEW BRITAIN in PAPUA NEW GUINEA (PNG). East New Britain (ENB) and it's main town of Rabaul is quite amazing. The people are VERY friendly and you will not be bothered by people trying to sell you souvenirs. ENB has volcanoes, safe beaches, swimming, coral reefs, diving, friendly dolphins and the former capital Rabaul. Rabaul was the original city but was consumed by ash from the nearby Tavavur volcano in 1994. There are also tours to nearby islands and I will recommend the Prince of Wales islands for a day trip. Historically the Japanese invaded and built a labyrinth of tunnels and fortifications in the nearby hills, which can also be visited.
    I flew from Cairns to Kokopo and most of the accommodation is in Kokopo. There is something about the place and I've never felt so relaxed. Also forget what you might hear about Papua New Guinea not being safe because ENB has island culture and the people there are totally different than on the mainland. So I would totally recommend visiting ENB in PNG.
    Anyway perhaps you can visit these places for longer on your next trip "down under".

    I'm amazed how difficult it is to island hop in the Pacific these days, at least by plane. I just checked Google Flights, thinking that Gabe could have tried to go via Samoa or Tonga to Tahiti and then on to Hawaii, but there is no way to fly from Apia or Nuku'alofa to Tahiti, except via Auckland. He could have gone north to Tuvalu or Kiribati, or west to Vanuatu or the Solomons, but there's no link to French Polynesia.
    On a related note, I see that the old flight from Tahiti to Easter Island no longer runs. That was one I had always wanted to take. Oh well.
    It would be cool to circumnavigate the globe staying south of the equator. Luckily the Auckland-Santiago and Johannesburg-Sao Paolo flights still exist, so it would be possible in big jumps, but not with stops in the South Sea Islands.

    I'm always relieved to see you get out in the deeper water. Did you know, 95% of shark attacks happen in under 4ft of water?

    27:30 there might be nasty, spiky creatures too, on the seafloor. While in the sea at Gozo, I used my rubber sandals too - they wore quite a bit on the sharp rocks.

    Touristy as hell but worth it.. beautiful paradise! That stretch of isolated islands does sound like the plan! So many and you could escape the groups. This place is clean... and the further you go into these areas.. man just imagine! Like the greek islands but even more isolated!
