- From Leslie Fish's long out-of-print album Firestorm. No claims to ownership are made or implied, all rights belong to their original owners.
According to Ms Fish herself you can get Firestorm from Random Factors Inc., care of Mary Creasey on Facebook. There's also lesliefish.com , her personal website that I somehow forgot about when I first posted these.
Other albums can be found at prometheus-music.com/
Chorus:
Better than who? (Better than who?)
The scores aren't in. (The scores aren't in.)
Let the gods of evolution say who'll win.
Better at what? (Better at what?)
In what way? (In what way?)
Let the gods of evolution have their say.
I'm better than you at shooting,
You're better than me with a knife.
Who's to say which tool works better when the thugs come for your life?
You're better than me at karate,
I'm better than you with a stick.
Do you really want to walk through the slums tonight, let the old gods take their pick?
I'm better at breathing pollution,
You're better at avoiding colds.
Which of us will last the longer in the threats the future holds?
You're better at surviving bug bites,
I'm better at eating junk.
If civilization sinks tomorrow, which of us would be sunk?
I'm better at training horses,
You're better at fixing cars.
Which will be in more demand at the next turn of the stars?
You're better at hunting rabbits,
I'm better at making fire.
Which of those skills can better fulfill what tomorrow might require?
I'm better at growing gardens,
You're better at counting cash.
Which will serve us best tomorrow, the money or the stash?
You're better at working computers,
I'm better at making a song.
Which will put more food on the table if the world goes right or wrong?
(musical interlude)
You're better at playing dominance,
I'm better at making friends.
What works better, whether or not civilization ends?
Nobody knows the future,
Or what skill betters the odds.
So it's best to say we're all born equal and leave the rest to the gods.

Everyone has skills...it depends which works best in any situation. It is best for a group to have skilled people in each area.
Why is this gem out of print? Not only is this the best album of the filk subgenre (IMO), but its also one of the greatest folk albums ever.....not to mention that most of these songs are just begging for a brutal metal cover!
The details elude me, but it's the age-old story of copyright issues. Leslie had a falling-out with her old record label and Firestorm got screwed in the divorce.
I can only imagine Caleb Hayes & Jonothan (forgot the last name) teaming up again for that brutal metal cover.
It's OOP because Firebird tried to claim they owned Leslie's songs, and Les responded, well, like one would expect Leslie to respond. There were lawsuits, and a LOT of bad blood.
@@liamtempleman8251 There is an updated version of Freedom of the Snow on one of Leslie's later albums. In my opinion, the update doesn't have the punch of the original, but it refers to shopping malls instead of girdles.
@Leslie Fish YAY!!!!
Thank you for posting these songs. I lost my tapes and miss them.
Can't think of anything more fair.
Bless you for posting these! I lost my tape, and would love to be able to buy a new one. This is her best IMHO
In reference to the description:
"From Leslie Fish's long out-of-print album Firestorm. No claims to ownership are made or implied, all rights belong to their original owners.
Unfortunately, Prometheus-Music seems to be gone, but according to Ms Fish herself you can get Firestorm from Random Factors Inc., care of Mary Creasey on Facebook. There's also lesliefish.com , her personal website that I somehow forgot about when I first posted these."
Lesliefish.com is no longer a valid website, I don't suppose you have a website for Random Factors Inc.?
(A google search turned up nothing except mathematical help documents on calculating with random factors.)
it works just fine for me, ignore the flash plugin and click where it says enter here.
Also Prometheus apparently is still up, it's prometheus-music.com, just haven't gotten around to updating the descriptions yet.
I believe you, though. I have no idea what's going on but when I checked prometheus before it wasn't there.
I wish more of these songs were available elsewhere.
Leslie Fish and her colleagues are all over RUclips; the entire filk genre is notoriously friendly towards sharing stuff.
For specific channels, Savatar the Surfing God and Weyrdmusicman have large archives of this kind of stuff.
Thanks, I've noticed that. I actually recorded about an hour's worth of filk songs on a tape, back in January when it seemed like a whole bunch of stuff would vanish off RUclips. Just out of curiosity, do you know anyone who has all of Lock and Load? Thanks
Hey, do you have Chickasaw Mountain by any chance? I'm hunting that one, and nobody seems to have it.
Yeah, I think I have that one digitized; didn't know it wasn't up here. Might take a while, making videos even as crappy as these gets tedious when there's 15-20 of them.
Edit: Definitely have it; gimme a few days. It'll probably just be a black background like Undertaker's Horse, and if anybody wants to do lyrics feel free.
The ones you linked are her remastered set; I've got the old cassette renditions where it's Leslie, her gutiar, and whatever booze she conned from the studio. Movie Maker is working in the background right now, should have them all uploaded in the next couple hours.
Oh, and sorry for taking so long to approve your comment. I just threw this stuff up here and had no notification for that.
I understand that, no worries. Thanks for the info. Booze, of course, for Monster... and maybe a bit left over for herself, eh? :-)
Oh, GREAT!! I'd never even heard *of* this song or this tape. Who's the second singer?
Not sure, I want to say Julia Ecklar or Heather Alexander, but I always get them mixed up.
Heather Alexander (now Alexander James Adams) did all of the fiddle-work and most of the backup vocals on Firestorm - including the backup vocals on Better Than Who?.
I'm glad so many old filk albums are getting uploaded to RUclips these days - most of my tapes are long missing or destroyed by the Arizona heat!
It's Heather Alexander. We talked them into singing this as a duet in the filk circle at the 2004 WesterCon. it was a hoot.
Technically, this is all adaptation, not evolution.
It's a small but very important distinction.
(Like the difference between a bullet and an arrow. Both are projectile ammunitions, but you'd better know the difference if you're going to try to use a gun or bow!)
