Makes me think how much Minehead needs to be part of the national rail network again, with services to Taunton and Bristol, and even possibly to London in the holiday season - even if it were just one train out early in the morning from Minehead, and one back in the evening. That surely would not interfere with the heritage railway operation and could provide valuable income for it.
It's about time the speed limit for Light Railway Orders was reviewed - it's bittersweet. It's a big relief knowing HSTs are being preserved, but having them trundling along at 25mph is kind of sad!
Looking at the condition of the track in the "long shot" @4.40.. I think most preserved lines would need a lot of investment to get the speed limit up. But , yes kind of sad. Like a caged tiger.
It’s good that they’ve been preserved and on heritage railways but it’s be nicer to see them used as charter trains on the main line where they can really stretch their legs!
Lovely aerial shot and a nice video overall. Very nice! I was firing Earlestoke Manor on Saturday morning, and it was fun passing the HST at Williton. There were photographers all up the line! Cheers! Simon
So long since I took a ride on a train, I thought these were still state of the art! So incongruous to see this train wiggling along tracks that look like trails of molten solder through a wildflower meadow. Like a thoroughbred put to grass, but strangely new. Like the first view of the Daleks! From head on, it looks like Sid Vicious. Nick.
Feels weird seeing these on heritage lines. Only a few weeks ago just outside Edinburgh Waverley there's a good number of HSTs still in use on the mainline with Scotrail.
I knew it. As soon as they ended the glorious reign of the HSTs they'd use them on heritage railways. Deservedly so, they are, after all, a part of our heritage.
I’m travelling on an evening HST at the Nene Valley this weekend. It will be strange on a heritage line but I’m pleased that they are being preserved and run.
A nice tribute to the HSTs. I was on one of the Saturday trains and I thought that the way GW trains had prepared the train announcements using the same ‘voice’ as on the main line trains was an excellent touch. Probably the last time I will travel on a HST.
Had a ride behind the Manor the other week which was great in both directions, our Grandson was thrilled, as ever. I wonder what he would make of riding on an HST which I don't think he's ever done. Hopefully, it'll be in action again here. (Lovely to see they're cultivating a linear garden on the WSR. Difficult to say if they or NR will win the prize this year...)
If you haven't seen it, look at the video of the Weymouth Ferry Train. I remember this - a full sized passenger train travelling down the middle of the road. Ended in the late 1970s possibly early 80s.
Mind you, an argument could be made that it's also a bit the other way round, that because the limit is 25, there hasn't been a need to worry as much. Which of course brings the other point up, money 💷
Once you raise speeds you raise costs on everything. Track maintenance has to be upgraded to start as does the quality of the track. Stock may have to have recertification for higher speeds
Love the music - what a great track and totally thematic of course although perhaps the part of the film portrayed by this piece is perhaps not quite appropriate here! Of course we are still enjoying our rails here in Scotland being graced by these fab old units - even in shortened versions. 'Inter-7-city' - although I feel they will have to be renamed to take into account our Eighth city now!
I bet the locals be very afraid !!! " It be a Dragon . Run !! " Especially around Williton !!! On a more serious note are they thinking of running services the GWR ?
It's great to see these machines in preservation but they were built to top 125mph and transport our population around the country....so sad to see them only top 30mph....
ive just been looking at the very poor state of the rails, they are all over the place, no wonder the driver is going slow, it would be nice to see a lot of these old lines open back up, more trains the passanger would steadily grow, then this would lead to investment, and people would leave the cars at home if the ifastruture is there.
No, find me the most expensive flights I have money to burn, not so high speed now. Crawling in to beg for some sort of mercy in Minehead, mein Gott, Gott in Himmel.
As a comical comment, Is that Train Driver Drayford, or Have they got the pointless 20 mph limit on train tracks as well now,?, lol. if that is High Speed Train, not much hope for this world.
You know the 20mph limits are only in urban areas which is common in English big cities too. The estate where I live has had a 20mph speed limit for years because there are children. You can still do 70mph on main roads. Similarly the Light Railways Act says that lines like this have a max speed of 25mph. You can still do 125 on the East Coast Mainline. Still need HS2 though because they were doing 125mph on the ECML 80 years ago!
@@melanierhianna I know it is all Urban areas (every bloody village I drive through in Wales now has it), and it is stupid, and adds 40 minutes a day to journey times, When I was a kid I and all other kids knew "not" to play in or near roads, I went to schools on Main Roads, so I find it a farce to hid behind safety for kids, by the government when maybe be they should be looking at teaching basic skills like how to cross a road, if they are to stupid these days to work it out , from the age of 7 years old, I traveled on foot, busses, 2x underground trains and foot again to school, 1 1/2 hours each way 5 days a week, on my own, from North to West London, even crossing the busy West Way in East Acton (before they eventually fitted pedestrian crossing lights) just fine, but in my day we did not have our faces glued to a mobile phone on facebook, or have ear buds in with music blasting away, while doing so, and the journey home was spent talking to other passengers, more often than not, I miss the good old days when common sense was popular, among the public at large and Politicians.

Swanage Railway is another possibility. The traffic on the roads getting to/from Swanage is really bad at times
I’d use that.
Great video . Love the long shots and drone footage. The long shots seem to show some dodgy bumpy rails. Many thanks.

True....but no worse than holding Scotsman or an A4 back on preserved lines!!
I think the HST deserve a bit of light work. They've worked over 40 years doing 125mph everyday.
@@andrewbowen4544 funnily enough,I was at minehead today! We had the beautiful large prairie and a Manor as our steeds!!
@@ianpark1906 But still a lot better than your typical US freight line!
It doesn’t seem that long ago I saw the prototype HST and APT next to each other at Swindon. In fact it was probably 50 years ago, unbelievable.
I had no idea an HST could actually travel that slowly. Impressive.
It’s good that they’ve been preserved and on heritage railways but it’s be nicer to see them used as charter trains on the main line where they can really stretch their legs!
There's loads of them so I'm sure some of them will be charter trains.
I hope we see some HSTs on charters next year head ing this way towards Poole, Bournemouth, Weymouth and Swanage
Love your videos. Me and my son make train videos and want to ride one of these

As others have said, condition of track not the best. It really needs replacing, but at what cost?
I like the music actually as well 🙂
Can't believe the state of the line near that station! May as well have just crossed a farmers field...

hs125 is almost a heritage train anyway haha its 50 years old
It’s hard to believe BR abandoned this wonderful area. Thank heavens for WSR. 🎉
West Somerset Railway should look into preserving a HST set, even if it is shortened
Me coming back from Dunster Beach on my Mountain Bike @ 4:25

@5:44 the grass needs cutting back lol great video too
The line is great especially on TSW
Certainly a test of patience with the 25mph line speed.

It's Great they are being preserved. They don't really look right on a single branch line going that slow. Great to see though.
Well, thats one way to straighten out the steel..
Great video should have GWR First group plc train serviceHST Taunton to Minehead for Butlins
The castle sets are being replaced by class 800 sets
The track approach to the platform was taken gingerly.
Great video. The drone shot is fantastic 👍 There’s also another version of that track called Midnight Dream by Daniel Finot 👍👍
Looks like the train took a wrong turning.
HST's always used to run at this speed whilst travelling tough Cornwall😂
People just standing there also cars keep passing over the rail . Why it’s going that slow ? Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤ she a beauty
its going slow as aproach the road level crossing
A luxury heritage train lol
Few comments about the speed restrictions not 25mph
See the track at around the 05:00 mark and that’s why it’s a 25 limit
Mind you, an argument could be made that it's also a bit the other way round, that because the limit is 25, there hasn't been a need to worry as much. Which of course brings the other point up, money 💷
These 125mph beasts down to only 25mph. Such a shame
A lot better than them being scrapped though, and people
would’ve thought that when steam was retired.
Once you raise speeds you raise costs on everything. Track maintenance has to be upgraded to start as does the quality of the track. Stock may have to have recertification for higher speeds
What was the purpose?
That tune makes me think of Saltwater
its love on a real train orignated from Tangerine dream
I thought of saltwater too
GTA 5 ambient music when you switch the radio off.

It looks like when you're lost in the car and grass starts to appear in the middle of the road
This HST will be going back to GWR Laira within 2 weeks.
Could a mower be attached?
What music is this? Sounds like Tangerine Dream.
it is T.D.

Great idea. Shame you added the music though
Weeds on the LINE?
what is HST?
High Speed Train - They were trains first used in the mid 1970s all the way up to today. They're diesel express trains that could get up to 125mph.
It just doesn’t feel right seeing them go 100 mph under their max speed, it just doesn’t look that appropriate
I'm guessing HST is not normal for minehead
Definitely not. It's a heritage route for tourists. So a steam train is more likely to be seen at Minehead.
Well, don't bother with HS2 if that's as fast as they go. 😅
Like I said the world's gone mad

Not very fast when going along this track.

whats with the music when there is visibilly a lovely bit of 'clag' at 1:37 - dammit i hate music in videos.
sorry to disapoint you but that is part of it
that new rail net work is a right waste of space, billions down the drain
New? This line dates from 1874.
This is not the video to be talking about HS2.
the tracks look dodgy
Is this the West Somerset Railways HST ?
Is it theirs to run on the railway for good ?
