      @@JohanSegeborn Do you get any feedback issues on this bass? I just ordered a Gretsch G5440LS but it hasn’t arrived yet. I want to gig with it and not just use it for recording. Any suggestions for minimizing feedback or will there be no issue?

    Dude, I love your vids. Dope music, sweet bass skills, and you always demo them musically which is how we're gonna be using them. And the sound quality is superb! I watch many comparison videos, but yours are always the deciding factor when I'm choosing a new bass.

  • @jkf9167
    @jkf9167 9 лет назад +4

    Hollow & semi-hollow basses are so much fun. The shootout format kind of worked against you as the mix favored certain basses against others that would have likely sounded better with the twist of a knob. I liked the Rivoli best here, and the Gretsch was no joke, but I remember playing an EB-2 once, with a pick and it sounded so smooth, clear and warm. The way it fit in with the bass drum was special.

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  9 лет назад +3

      I agree, the EB2 is by far the best of these basses, but it drowned in this particular mix. Cheers

      I still have my first bass, 1966 EB2 that I bought new in '67. It's a great bass, but I never played it on gigs after my first working band in 73. Ended up with a P bass and another 30 or so basses. Now I'm starting to play the Gibson again with more acoustic guitar gigs. So fat and solid, but lacks the drive needed for harder rock, funk. Good for blues and some jazz as well. Recently purchased a Warwick Rock Bass Star Bass II, 5 string. LOVE that bass!

    There are so many ways to influence the sound - compression, string type, tone controls, preamp levels....and of course playing style and pick vs. fingers. Almost any bas can sound good (or bad) under the right conditions. Even a Vox Skybolt !!

    Wanted to hear more of the Fenders, but Gretsch was hands-down the best in this video.
    Thanks for making it.
    Let's get at least a minute from each next time? More of your excellent Fingerstyle and maybe a little flat picking (anything to vary the attack), plus some simple full range of walking scales through major/minor modes with the backing track down in the mix would be ideal. Hope this helps! lol- it is kind of a note to myself too. Thanks again =)

    As always, outstanding playing Johan. Your guitar demos and now the bass demos I have seen from you show increidble versatility and skill. As for this demo, I just wish the backing track was quieter. I could barely hear the Gibson, Coronado or Starcaster basses. Yup, the Gretsch was my favorite from this demo. BTW where do you get all the Guitars, Speakers etc for all your demos? I was like a drug junky listening to your Celestion Speaker videos. You definitely give good comparisons to see the real thing before making decisions.

      Johan, Thanks for responding. As I said before, you do very thorough and nice demos. I considered with the quieter basses that they were passive, while the louder more pronounced ones were active, but I think only the Gretsch was active. Keep up the nice videos. Many many folks like me sure learn a lot from you.

    I had originally chosen the # 2 Gibson EB 2.
    Having listened over and over again, I come to one sole conclusion;
    The Gretsch Electromatic is outstandingly Majestic, not only in the eyes of the beholder,
    but just as well to the beholder of ears!
    (One need plug in this you tube sound to a true HiFi Stereo amp with premium speakers)
    And what more; I would very much like to hear Mr Segeborn do a versatile shoot out between
    the Gretsch, The Jack Cassady and the Rickenbacker Bass!
    :-D

    What? No Guild? I was hoping to see a Starfire II in your Shootout.. I've always preferred the hollow or semi hollow. Decades ago, I had a Hagstrom hollow body but lent it out and I never got it back. It had great tone. I wish I still had it. I acquired a '72 Starfire II in 1972. It was only a month old. Still have it.

      +Jade Pascual I'm playing one of those right now and can tell you I love it! It's the first hollow electric/short scale bass I've ever played. Unfortunately it's not mine so I'm looking to replace it with a Coronado or Starcaster. Unfortunately I can't hear them in this video.
      Also, Eastwood advertises the honeyburst color on their website for the Classic 4, but they no longer supply this finish. I couldn't find this color ANYWHERE! My roommate ordered the walnut finish thinking it would be a light brown but it showed up nearly black. They said the color depends on the cut of the wood. You've been warned!

    All roundwounds or any flats?
    That Gretsch sounds lovely. Deep lows, plenty of attack, and just right amount of texture!
    EB2 sounds FAT... but very pillowy (no attack)! Never thought of the Starcaster much until now - fat but decent attack & controlled lows for a semi. Also seems to work with the kick drum a bit better than EB2. But I think my favorite is Rivoli! At least in a band situation. Perfect!

    I love hollowbody basses, especially EB2/Revolis, just not digging the backing tracks.

    The Gretsch and the Gibson were the only two that were played where most people play on them ie. not over the fretboard. Where you pluck has a huge influence on the resulting tone so his demo is not really a true test since he did not duplicate the same thing on each bass. And that Muzak backing track 👎 was way too loud, couldn’t hear the two Fenders at all. Way too much plucking hand clacking going on as well as He’s plucking the string downwards into the pickups.

    Well you never played the same notes or the same tune so a comparison become very diluted! By far the best part of the review was the indeed the Gretch! If you had played each of the basses exactly the same that would have given this review credibility!
    Please tell us the name of the piece of music you were playing ?
