You guys have to be aware: Tony is a world class musician. And one of the things he is known for is to walk in on a jam session and sit in for a song or 2. This isn't his gig. He's being featured so of course he's going to go nuts haha.
Tony is a amazing drummer. Asking Tony to play a pocket groove in this kind of "sit-in/special guest" situation would be like asking Steve Vai to sit-in a just play the chord changes. Tony's got plenty of pocket.
I find it interesting how drums can change the complexion of an entire song, Tony's playing and off time beats made it sound like a song from another genre unlike grunge, it shows how drums and rhythm are so important to the structure of a song
What's everybody's deal with saying he overplayed? Everyone is clearly there to see Tony and even if not the band fuckin sucks. Don't act like you wouldn't have wanted to see him play like that if you saw him.
People are saying that Tony 'overplays' this song but to be honest he actually shows that he can just groove in this song. Yeah he plays some ridiculous fills and such but as others said, he is the attention is this situation. Even then, he still lays down a FAT 4/4 groove every now and then. I wonder what Dave Grohl thinks since he is still alive and well!!!
considering Dave's a drummer and with Foo Fighters routinely pulls people from the audience to play I think he'd adore even a seasoned pro like Tony sitting and playing like this.
Over playing! Are you serious? If I wanted to listen to a pocket version of that song I'd listen to the original recording, or one the hundreds of drum covers on RUclips by the everyday run of the mill drummer who's only option is to play it pocket because they don't have the ability to play like that. Playing that song in the pocket is a waste of his ability. I'm not a fan of rock/metal in the slightest and tony took a song that I don't care for and made not bearable but enjoyable as well. Guys, think before comment. What's the point in having him play in the pocket when I can find anyone to do that. I personally can't stand it when amazing drummers like him play pocket, and that's coming from a pocket drummer. Seeing him play that song like that should inspire creativity or a change in approach to something you've heard played the same way a million times. Not hate from jealous guys that aren't half the drummer he is. some of you guys are ridiculous.
We all know Tony is extremely talented, skilled, and knowledgable behind a kit, but too often I see him overplay tracks. I know he was just rockin out and having fun though. 8) Keep doin your thing TRJ
I think he overplayed intentionally to give the people a good show there, everybody was just watching him anyway- he's the star here.. nonetheless i'd find it way more impressive if he just played the track as recorded.. that would have shown real class and down to earth grounding.
Overplaying? If this is overplaying, show me a video showing a rock Drummer playing this type of song with a straight beat and no dynamics. Come on, Tony kept a clean pocket and added some dynamics on a rock song that is HEAVILY FEATURING THE DRUMMER. THIS IS A SONG WHERE THE DRUMMER IS SUPPOSED TO GO OFF! Please before you comment......understand the music that is being played. Clearly, heavy metal rock song is going to need a drummer with power and dynamics. These are absolutely ridiculous....and it just shows the most people commenting don't understand musical genres and dynamics (when their needed)....clearly this song is dynamic-full.
As far as any type of song being played straight. Literally all of AC/DC's songs, lots of foo fighters songs and this song is also not stuffed with Tony's usual chops that really aren't fitting for any music that isn't instrumental. There's more to drumming than pocket and that's rhythm. Tony didn't match it, it was broken by far too many speedy single fills
+Philip Knöfel You realize this is at a drum festival and he is one of the most well known drummers in the world right now, right? People don't go to drum clinics to watch Tony Royster Jr. stay in the pocket to a 90's grunge song with a horrible singer.
+K Woodz he doesn't realize that this was from a drum festival or that this isn't just any drummer drowning out a horrible singer or making a subpar drum set do more than it should... but your right "People don't go to drum clinics to watch Tony Royster Jr. stay in the pocket..." unless thats what the clinic is about.... and this wasn't a clinic...
bruh, you do realize this is a song where the drummer is HEAVILY featured. so yes, the drummer is supposed to go off. think before you make silly comments.

+zack graybeal Good lord, thankfully someone in here has common sense.
Zack grooves man!!!! Love your Channel! I DID NOT EXPECT TO MEET YOU HERE LOL!
So you were here before being youtuber XD
You need to grow up
Tony is one of my favorite drummers. He can play drums to any genre of music at a mastery level. Truly impressive and talented artist.
Loved to see Tony playing a 4 piece and Nirvana. That just made my day. Hellll yeahh
You gotta feel for the band's drummer. ......incredible

good to see him playing a different genre it's always good to here some straight up rock drumming coming from a drummer like tony
What a MASTER!! Smell!! lml
I guess people can't appreciate a creative drummer when they actually see one being creative...
Smells like jazzy spirit.
très original cette version mais je ne suis pas surpris de la part de Tony :)
merci Philippe pour le partage!
What's everybody's deal with saying he overplayed? Everyone is clearly there to see Tony and even if not the band fuckin sucks. Don't act like you wouldn't have wanted to see him play like that if you saw him.
Tony's too good for just a cover track like this. If he sat in for my band at a gig, we'd let him do an improv funk jam so he could cut loose, lol

Ah ah :-) "Pas mal, pas mal", at the end the drummer said to him "not bad, not bad" ^^
感動した!amazing!
eres un capo ! tony royster excelente!
just wanted to point out.....notice the crowd didn't care about the lead singer. Their eyes were solely on Tony.
The singer murdered that song!
the singer is bad a lot
Not Tony’s setup but he killed it 👍🏻
There is such s thing as 'too busy', tony is the man though
Eu nem voltava mais pra bateria hahahahahaha
Rho, he's amazing!!! :o
he slayed this song! fuck these comments.

We all know Tony is extremely talented, skilled, and knowledgable behind a kit, but too often I see him overplay tracks.

More importantly , I would love to see the drummer follow him... Eeek.. :P Not necessarily technically, just how's his confidence and nerves...
зачет!)
Mapex Mars !!!

ta loco ta
You don't see other math drummers sitting down on some junky kit and rocking out.
I think he knows he is overplaying hes just showing off for his fans
Lol people have to hate to make themselves feel adequate funny
Kinda just took a big shit on Dave's drum track but it's still amazing
just made the whole song a little bit more bearable.
I think he overplayed intentionally to give the people a good show there, everybody was just watching him anyway- he's the star here.. nonetheless i'd find it way more impressive if he just played the track as recorded.. that would have shown real class and down to earth grounding.

And there were no dynamics what so ever from tiny and rarely is. He goes 0 to 100 in a flash
+Kunle Oyeledun you have it all wrong...lol
+Gregor Wlliamson you a dumb ass hater ass nigga
I'm done. Retiring my sticks.
Thought was Dave Grohl
dave grohl would be proud,lol
i don't like it's not rock,nobi don't like it's not a groove it's just rock man
Great song, but Tony deserves better lol
I would rather listen to a virtuoso go overboard than hear this song again. It was the only interesting part about this video.
That singer was atrocious
This is the best butchering of this song. Ever.
The singer is the problem NOT TONY
couldn't he just play the song? he is just showing how you play "too much" in a song.

sagenblade Many a drummer needs a pocket clinic, that is for sure.
Strange comment! This is a wild song - so he play wildly! What is wrong with that?! He is just a cool drummer!
Tony has unreal drumming skills, but this was a case of extreme, excessive overplaying. Ruined the song.
if anybody ruined the song it was the trash ass singer cuzz
