I love this. I did this when I was a kid but I’m just wanting to get back into it. We need a racing league in Canada. This is perfect for fun. More cost affective then RC car and we can print custom tracks. Is there a shop in Canada where I can buy cars ?
It is most likely due to the motor. There was a story from my Team Leader in my workplace where when he was young, his brother tried to impress his playmates with his new 4wd. But he forgot that his motor was newly replaced. So when he tried to open it up and placed on a track, it went Baby Driver mode (backwards).

You can use definitely use Tamiya Neo champ batteries since they are also NiMH.
