  • Hi beautiful people! In this video, I show you a glimpse of what life as an electrical engineer can be like and what my 9 - 5 job is like. I explain what engineers really do and show you a bit of the systems we work on. I am a telecommunications engineer and telecommunications is a sub-discipline of electrical engineering, so... same difference 😉.
    PS: This vlog was filmed in my second week at my new job.
    Here is a work day in my life as an electrical engineer. 🥂
    Enjoy!
    xx Mutombo.

    Beautiful I love this content. Big up, African women in STEM. I work as an automation engineer in South Africa. The company that you are working for is it a Cameroonian company or a multinational company? Why don't you guys bring laptops to the field and view the same data that is viewed by the people in the office from your dashboards.

    • @mutomboinprogress
      @mutomboinprogress  Год назад +12

      Hi CodyBanks! Oh yes, it’s a multinational company. Regarding your last question, that is a bit of a thinker. Your suggestion makes so much sense and some of the field engineers do that, in fact they can even login and open the dashboards on their phones for a high-level view but I’ve thought about it and here’s what I’ll say
      1. It will make the time spent on each site twice as long if they did the verification on both ends themselves. Some of these sites are found in remote locations, mountains, villages and the field team sometimes have more than 4 hours to travel each way for one site visit. Cutting that time down is not only more efficient but safer for those on the field.
      2. Having a NOC team in the office to check, confirm and report what has been done for each site is an extra layer of control on the work done on each site, quality control if you will. Without that extra layer of accountability on both sides, I can’t tell you how much temptation there is to half-ass it and leave. It’s true that measures can be put in place to reprimand people who may not have done a thorough job but it’s better to have a working system that we get paid for than have to run after people after the fact to punish them for a system that our client can’t use. Sometimes, things are overlooked and it’s not because the individual is lazy or incompetent, and a second set of eyes from a different perspective can catch errors that aren’t as apparent to somebody who just spent the last 20 minutes working on it.
      3. Most importantly, the field team and the NOC team in the office have 2 very different job descriptions and skill sets because it’s not just about checking if the data on the dashboard is the same as that physically measured but it’s also about troubleshooting, depending on if a discrepancy measured is a logical/software issue or a physical/hardware issue. It’s literally the difference between employing one person who has general knowledge on the whole system and can do a bit of everything, and employing two people each of who is an expert on one of the two different parts of the system to work on that part.
      Thanks for this comment - it made me really think about my role and really assess the need for my entire team. Loved the stimulation ✨👌🏽
      PS: the term ‘site’ refers to one cell tower location.

      Yes it is always best to ensure control area is reading the same as field site. Sometimes lines add distortions or signal loss or both. After maintenance a full loop check is necessary.

    You look good in your work attire! It’s refreshing.
    I used to be so afraid to ask questions be in during lectures or at work, I would always sit awkwardly and try to figure it out myself when asking could just save me lot of time. So when you said “I never shy away to ask questions”, that just resonated with me and motivated me to now do the same (More often)! I need to remind myself there are no dumb questions AND I am a constant learner so no need for shame..❤️❤️

    • @mutomboinprogress
      @mutomboinprogress  2 года назад +6

      Omg JessiTrey Love, I completely relate to this. This used to be me, especially at work. It still is, in some aspects of life but I’m working on coming out of it. I was better at asking questions during lectures because I knew that’s what I was paying for. But when it came to work, I would spend hours on a task instead of asking for directions because I felt that’s what they were paying me for. My supervisors for my masters program would tell me they are available for questions and I would never take them up on their offer because I had boxed myself into this idea that research is supposed to be independent study and if I’m worth my salt, I WILL FIGURE IT OUT. I am an over thinker and I overthought myself into a depressive state over the last couple of years. It came to the point where I had to tell myself ‘Life doesn’t have to be a struggle every single moment of my existence’. What you see now is a work in progress. I’m still trying to unlearn and climb down the pedestal I put myself on, and that every one around me put me on. No, I want to be down here where the ground is solid and where community functions.
      This was my mental state just a few months ago ruclips.net/video/JlsXQWpe_mc/видео.html
      I want to encourage you again to ask for help and ask for clarification when you need it because
      1. Time is too valuable. More valuable than money or even a reputation for being independent
      2. We were are all part of the same body, the same machine, so we all need to help each other
      3. It just makes things easier both for you and those you work with, even if they are the ones having to answer your questions.
      Thanks for commenting about this, I feel like I just had a deep therapy session and I didn’t know this was sitting on my mind so deeply 😂😂😂. I think this response was more for me than it was for you haha. Sorry for the brain dump 😛😛.

    • @jessiitreylove3290
      @jessiitreylove3290 2 года назад +1

      Thank you for your detailed response. I’ve screenshotted so I can come back to it. What you said , I felt it in my core. Being put in a certain position by others, when you encounter difficulties you don’t usually open up to say anything. You suck it up and keep it moving - or at least try.. and then you have the same people always praising you. And sometimes you just want to scream “but I’m struggling right now” it’s very hard lol..
      I went back to watch the linked video, and I can only second what has been said in the comments under that video.
      “If you’re not making progress, you’re regressing” thank you for that.
      It’s not easy but we’ll give ourselves the means to succeed. Even if that means pausing for a moment..❤️
      Ps: I’ll keep asking questions when I’m stuck 😄😄

      My sister, this French. Some days, I get up and refuse to speak it because I'm too tired to translate. I just speak to everybody in English. You can respond in French or English - but me, I'm speaking English. 😂😂😂
      Thank you so much for speaking blessings into my life, Len ❤❤❤

    I love the way u explained soils. That’s my area of specialization and that’s one of the projects my team works on when we go for field work. Lol but people don’t seem to get it when I say am a soil expert.

      Thank you very much, Dr Wainkwa. I've realised since entering the professional world in 2015 that half of the jobs out there are not the traditional things we were taught about in school. There are literally companies and business sectors we would never hear of, unless we knew someone who worked there.
      I hope you enjoy your work as a soil expert! 🥂

      I think it depends on the season but it has been about twice a month over the last 2 months. Electricity has been pretty stable in Douala recently.
