I've always been fascinated by Byzantine Icons - both in religious and aesthetic aspects of them. I've tried painting a few but never quite understood how they are painted until recently I discovered that these were made using tempera paint! No wonder my acrylic versions don't come close...though, using transparent oil paint seem to get visually similar results. Sigh, powder pigments are VERY EXPENSIVE here in our country!
This icon is very much like Our Lady of Perpetual Help , a Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary as represented in a celebrated 15th-century Byzantine icon. The icon originated from the Keras Kardiotissas Monastery and has been in Rome since 1499. Today it is permanently enshrined in the Church of Saint Alphonsus, where the official Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help text is prayed weekly. Best regards

I do not uderstand the gold fringe/border at her shoulder. It nakes no visual sense that i can see...it is not an edge of the garment that i can follow with the eye. Its more like a sewn on epaullet. If it were spread flat on the ground, where would it be?

Πολύ ωραία ιδέα αλλά χρυσώνω με μιξιον κρατώντας τον κάμπο ματ. Υπάρχουν καταπληκτικό αγιογράφο που στυλβωνουν τέλεια! Έχουν κ βίντεο νομιζω
