    The bigger trem blocks don't affect tone that much, but they help sustain. I have put big brass blocks in two of my guitars. That plus upgrading the saddles to rolled stainless steel really helped my CV strat. Those two together really helped. You can hear it resonate a lot better even not plugged in.

    Nice review, I've got 3 HB ST-62 in Dakota Red, Seafoam Green and in Vintage White. And I had a lot of Strats from Fender in the last 25 Years. But I really like the Harley Benton's. The Necks are awesome, the Frets are perfect and the Pickups sound way better than the Fender's on the Classic Player. And like you Said, way better than a SQUIER Classic Vibe. Cheers 🤘🏻

    I have 3 HBs. A vintage olympic white ST62 was first, scratchy frets but were great after a wire wool polish, kept the Roswells SCs as they sounded fine, impressed bigtime for the money. Then a vintage natural tele, heavy brick but amazing neck and frets - I always polish frets, hammer the trem guitars to check stability, and restring anyway (as I bend alot to half or quarter tones), kept the Roswells but might drop humbuckers in as it's routed ok, again impressed for the money. Then a CST 24 PRS style, brilliantly finished neck and set up, fat frets (that I don't much like - I have a great PRS SE 24), dropped in some cheap FLEOR coil-tap zebra humbuckers and it sounds great, very powerful. Tempted by this strat and would also swap the pickups for Fenders. BTW, I reckon swapping the trem block would fix the buzz (from resonance). I built a Fender strat lately from scratch with only top end Fender parts, cost a fortune, it didn't hack the quality of these HBs (especially the expensive neck - I wouldn't trust Fender parts much, but would still buy the guitars). So, I recently picked up a placid blue s/h Fender Player strat from a music studio, brilliantly set up, and it plays the best of all my guitars. I don't think set up gets enough attention actually. Mind you, nothing gets near my 1975 USA strat. Now, shall I go for this one...trem and pickup swap costs...hell, where am I going to put it...68 and proper 'old school' strat lover..too bad.

    I had a 2000 Squier Stratocaster, gold label, purple sparkle, that I paid $130, used in an Austin, Tx pawn shop. I don't know what it sold for when new, but that was a fantastic guitar. Rosewood fretboard, galactic metallic purple, made in Indonesia.
    I loved that guitar, and it was a much better guitar than my Harley Benton ST 62 VW MN.
    I love the Harley, but I have to be honest, with a few adjustments the Squier was superb, where as the Harley is fun to play, but the quality of the instrument is a little bit lower than the Squier.
    I would have kept that Squier, but I used it to make a deal I don't think many people would pass up.

    I had to do some minor fret levelling on 6 out of the 9 Harley Benton I had. Nothing big, from one to a handful of frets, but it had to be done for action between 1.5 and 2 mm at 12th fret. I never had to do this on any of my 7 Ibanez.
    Put a folded paper towel under the springs and they'll be silent. Or roll straps of chocolate packaging cardboard and slide them inside the springs.

    If thats an aluminum pick guard any pickups you put in that guitar will sound good. It reduces high end noise and radio interference considerably and has twice the resonance of a regular pickguard. I put one on my strat and it made my stock pickups sound like they're custom shop

    I really can't understand why Fender and other manufacturers of ST type guitars still offset the bridge pickup. ST type guitars are too trebly and shrill on the bridge pickup, so if manufacturers had them parallel like the mid. and neck pickups that would go a long way to reducing that tinny strat sound so beloved of players in the 50's. (😖)

    why should 1950's tech and cheap raw materials be expensive?

    • @elzafir
      @elzafir 2 года назад +1

      I agree. These days, you can spend like $250 on a Harley Benton Gotoh guitar (you get Gotoh tuner & bridge, and korean Tesla pickups), maybe do a $100 of upgrades for Switchcraft jack & switch & CTS pots and for $350 you get a really high quality guitar. If you wanna splurge then, add another $250-300 to PLEK the guitar to make the frets perfect. What you can't fix though is the wood quality. You can't get a nice AAAA quilt or flame maple for that price.
      That said, US-made guitars are expensive because the workers are expensive. American guitar builders are paid a lot more than Mexican or Indonesian workers. Plus usually, on more expensive guitars, they spent more time working on it (nicer fret dressing, more time on quality control, PLEK process, etc.) which adds up to the cost. But, Indonesian-made guitars ARE really nice these days: PRS SE, EVH Wolfgang Standard, Schecter, ESP LTD, Sterling by Musicman, Squier Classic Vibe, Harley Bentons, etc. Of course, the most expensive AAAAA/Master grade wood are reserved for US-made guitars.
