I've been watching WW2 documentaries every since I was a boy, born 1948, and I thought I'd seen every film clip available. Oh no, this channel shows much more than I ever thought even existed. It is an epic and legendary effort by this channel. As a history lover, I thanks you.

After World War II in Colour (2008) came out I figured that was pretty much the last really good WWII documentary that would be produced.
Man, was I wrong!

The TV series Combat was my intro 2 WW2. I saw the reruns on tv around 1970. My next WW2 experience was The Great Escape, then Patton in the theater in 1970 when it came out.
But it was the BBC World At War series that made me a life-long WW2 fan. I read every book I can on the subject.
My grandfather and his brother both landed on Utah Beach.

Special shout-out for my great grandfather Hugh Norton, of the Big Red One in the first wave on Omaha Beach. I believe D-Day was his first combat experience. He participated in the Liberation of Paris, Battle of the Bulge, and more in 1944 and 1945. This documentary really means a lot to me and so many people out there. I haven’t been able to leave many person comments about my family’s experience in the war until now.

The voice at the start is Chester Wilmot, Australian War Correspondent, who flew in a 6th Airborne glider to Normanby on D-Day.
He worked for the ABC and had reported on the AIF actions in North Africa. He walked the front lines of the Kokoda Track New Guinea campaign with the Australians fighting the Japanese.Wilmot was critical of General Blamey actions or inactions, who withdrew his war correspondent status. He then left the ABC and joined the BBC. He travelled with the D-Day troops to the eventual surrender and wrote the book The Struggle For Europe. He was killed in one of the Comet jet liner crashes in 1954 aged 42.

Nuh uh I've been watching longer
Two of my uncles were part of D-Day. Both were NCO’s in the US Army although both were immigrants from the Netherlands. Hank was with the 82nd AB and a veteran of Sicily and the Salerno landings. Sam was a combat engineer with the 4th ID. This was his first action. You might say they were both on their way “home” if all goes well. As it turned out both of them did see “home “ before the end of the war.

It's like seeing the tens of thousands of young boys do what they did almost 80 years ago in WWII on that front: forever change and save the destiny of our world and of the independent people, free people at that.

Man, the depth of information on the logistics of this is both impressive and mind blowing. Everyone thinks of the battle, but the effort that made the operation possible is incredible.
Greece was also fighting that day, despite being occupied for three and a half years... Two Greek corvettes from our exiled navy, escorted the Northumberland Division to the beach that dawn. Four more ships carried troops and supplies to the beachhead. At the same time 155 Greeks serving with the US forces also landed on the beaches, many paying the ultimate price. They all made Greece proud. Thank you for your efforts. This documentary is sheer viewing pleasure...

I have no doubt that this 24-hour content stream is the TimeGhost's D-Day. All the preparations being made on months in-advance leading up to this point bring about a great result. No other source has been able to conjure this much information about the 6th of June, 1944. Congratulations guys!

I'm finally getting a chance to follow it this year...missed it last year.
The soldiers, sailors, and airmen are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which they have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon them. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with them.
I don't know if its the language, the gravity of the situation, or what, but something about this speech captivates me. Very moving.

The perfect speech for a moment of this magnitude and of this high tension. They were there to do true good and bring true peace and independence for the people of Europe, they couldn't fail.

Amazing documentary! Can't wait to watch the rest of this series. Much thanks for the shout out to the USS Nevada! My PawPaw served on her from 1940 till the end of the war. He saw the writing on the wall and switched over to serve in experimental aircraft squadrons after the war and finished out his 20 years far from the sounds of the guns. He never spoke of the war, except to tell me about the time they were struck by a kamikaze near one of the main turrets. He told me that they found the body of the pilot and laid him out under a green blanket near the turret. Decades later, I saw a picture of the after effects of the kamikaze and, there in the picture, you could see the blanket covering the body. Funny side note, he had a picture of him on the beach of Agana, Guam, after the invasion. In 1972, my father, on his way home from Vietnam, had a picture in the same area taken. In 1988, while I served in the Marines, I had a picture taken in the same area. You could really see the difference, with my PawPaw standing amidst shell holes and destruction, my father standing next to a paved road with some buildings in the background, and me standing there in front of hotels with the beaches in the background and Japanese tourists all around. I wish I still had those pictures...

It is a very humbling experience to see the contribution of the hundreds of thousands of people accurately detailed- many of them, unsung, who contributed to the success of D-Day and whose challenges were in an order of magnitude, so many times greater those those we have experienced in our lives. Thank you very much to the team at World War Two who have once again- as in the Pearl Harbor broadcasts, created such an all-encompassing and compelling programme which will be an outstanding compilation and record of this unparalleled historical event.
This is sterling work, even if I might struggle to watch it all. The best presentation of this pivotal moment in WW2 I have ever seen.

RIP, my grandmother was a German Jew in hiding in holland liberated by the 82nd.
she said it was the happiest day of her life seeing the parachutes fill the sky
@@Sapnfap Uncle Jerry parachuted into Holland as well, unfortunately as he was coming down out of the sky, the germans were shooting flak at them and he was wounded (bad concussion) for the 3rd time and I believe he was knocked out of the war.
My Grandfather was also in the war, he was a tanker under general patton. He said his unit was one of the first to cross the rhine river into germany, he also liberated concentration camps. He said that his unit was advancing so fast, and the germans were surrendering to them. He said his unit would basically strip down the germans of their weapons etc, and would execute the officers. My grandfather came back from the war with 10 lugers, and a bunch of watches taken from the german officers.
The opening comments are from Chester Wilmot, an Australian journalist working for the BBC and landing with the 6th British Airborne Division. He later wrote the classic "The Struggle for Europe".
Indy Gives a really thorough analysis of gliders and their pilots. Anybody wanting to hear the viewpoint of the glider tug's pilot should watch this video where an incredible Australian pilot gives his input- especially, how hard it was to marshal the aircraft and the gliders into formation for the planned operation. Indeed, his experience at Arnhem is salutary as he describes the failure to resupply the radios that were needed as the pilot of the tug broke the towing cable. Here are the search words for YT and it is also an appreciation of the Stirling itself- an aircraft that is misunderstood." Flying the Stirling bomber in World War Two Old Fliers Group."
I’m so proud to have met multiple veterans who stormed the beaches that terrible day and came ashore in the days and weeks afterward. Some of the bravest and most noble men I’ve ever met.

A Buckinghamshire native and it's always great to hear about the capture of Pegasus Bridge. I went there on a school trip and other sites in Normandy when I was 11/12.
My grandfather flew a glider in both Market Garden and Overlord. His glider accidently impaled itelf on a german artillery piece upon landing, killing the 3 Germans manning it. He had been horribly wounded by anti-aircraft flak minutes before. A jolly fellow when I knew him as a grandfather...he was a recipient of the Air Force Cross for these actions, after getting all of the soldiers he was transporting to their units despite the near mortal injuries. The Greatest Generation!

Also, when you were describing the chaos of the drop, I was picturing the scene from the Longest Day. I really wish we got a proper series or movie on the British glider and paratroopers who dropped and landed.
I'm still watching it. A unbelivably intense and well made documentary. My late grandfather was there, on D-Day. In his last years he started talking about the moment when all hell broke loose and he and his comrades came under fire from the battleships out there. Unable to return fire, just hoping to get out of this alive.
Luckily he did. Became a POW later in Falaise.

This is an epic piece of work. Thanks so much Indy and Spartacus! I was hoping you'd talk about the Spitfire cover over Utah Beach undertaken by the Polish 'Wing' that included my dad. He flew over the fleet and said it was the most amazing thing to see arrayed all before him. His first sortie was just before dawn and his last got back just after dusk. Nobody wanted to miss out that day! can't wait to watch the rest!!! Thanks again.

A community united in their love of History, and often of their family members who served and experienced D-Day, made this wonderful experience possible. In both chats, we found great people who I hope can call each other friends and a sense of fellowship rarely felt.

These channels have covered WW1, The inter war era, WW2 & more in excruciating detail. The day which marks the beginning of the last 11 months of Nazi Germany has come.. The day which sealed the fate of Hitler and so many other atrocious enemies of humanity. While so many battles are so intriguing from WWII, nothing hits as hard as D-Day does. All the planning, effort, significance, etc.. it truly was a day of days. So thankful for the bravery and steadfastness showed that day by Allied forces.

I watched these all on the other channel, then came here to watch the ads to generate revenue. This was a great project. Good job to the entire team.
I never what the end results of the day would be from watching other docs and shows before, and yet this documentary was still gripping. Just the sheer amount of makeshift/mix unit organization while the documentary being in time with the first 24 hours really felt like i had to guess as to what was going to happen next.
Plus the live news updates that people were receiving back in 1944 really puts into perspective on the ongoing constant updates we're getting now in 2023 about Ukraine.
80th anniversary of d-day tomorrow
I was thinking we would get about 90 minutes of extra content around 6 june. But we got like 25 hours of extra content... im happy like a child in a toystore now. The level of detail is amazing

Sorry guys, but the moment I saw you two it got me back to 1996 when I was playing "Command & Conquer: Red Alert" PC real-time strategy game (in case you're not familiar, C&C RA game had WWII setting, but Einstein went back in time to eliminate Hitler, but then Stalin decided to start WWII instead) which used mission briefing with live actors, the background map, the setup, your outfit, it just looks so nostalgic to me 😉
So far I'm only 24 minutes into this bu, but couldn't resist breaking off to say that it's one of the most brilliant presentations on WW2 I've ever seen. Drama. Detail. Insight. A real documentary tour de force. Thank you. Now back to watching the remaining 5+ hours!

Loving this, my dad was 9th bn and took part in the Merville battery attack. Not many people get to meet their heroes, i was brought up by mine.
Your viewers recognize the shear massiveness of this project. To say this has never been done before is an understatement.... I don't think anyone has even thought of this. 5 hours into ep 1 and I know 100% that I'm finishing this.
