This is stagerring to me in so many areas. (also amazing how they can now improve the video frame rate on very old footage). The Pole vault, high jump and long jump had no soft landing areas, so very impressive considering. The discus and hammer techniques haven't changed too much.
The London 1908 marathon started at Windsor castle and finished in white city. The actual marathon distance was extended by an extra 2 miles, so Queen Alexandra could view the start from her window over looking the lawn in Windsor castle.
There's footage of them charging down Windsor Castle Hill at breakneck speed, or so it seems. No wonder they were on hands and knees by the end. There is now a Dorando Close at White City. I asked a couple of residents once if they knew why it was so called? "Haven't got a clue, mate..."
Now all I want to know is who was the first female Olympian to forgo wearing a dress to their event. Somone at some point went renegade and put on some shorts.
I wrote a term paper about the 1908 London Olympics for a university history course on Edwardian England. Attendance at the Games was disappointing in the first few days. It picked up at the end, however.
I still love how the British Olympic Committee is in effect older than the modern games, with the national Olympian association in 1865
The saftey here is absolutely immaculate
No soft landing for pole vaulters.
bro we got similar profile pictures
Those fillies in the archery are rather dashing. Would like to see Tug of War restored for the 2028 Games. Also, Egg & Spoon Race.

Jumping over the pommel horse WITH A GUY SITTING ON IT should definitely be brought back into the games.
Not a pommel horse. Long horse vault.
Why did they get rid of tug of war? It should still be an event.
Bharatiya persons never let you win anyone then powerful bharatiyas❤
We did this for fun growing up 😂
Bring tug of war back!
Archery in dresses looks badass!
Women were more modest back then.
@@phreak761fuck off with your misogyny.
And they were using real bows…no sights.

Even the ladies who played badminton😆

Were you the kid I bought an ice cream for? I was the one wearing a hat.
@@pomerau I can’t believe it , yes 🙌 thank you so much ☺️
parking was a fking nightmare
Thank you for posting 🙂
What? No breakdancing?
That vault was lit
FANTASTIC!!!!!
Crazy poll vault has no landing besides the ground
That's how it was for many decades. Land on your feet!
Once pads came into use the heights got insane.
Do you have some archives about football matches in this Olympic games???
Maybe this video was on a private collection
the thumnbail definitely looks like they are racing on a velodrome but theres wasn't any footage :(
Love the seriousness of the women archery competitors. And wow the hurdles look brutal. Don't touch those.
All in heaven now maybe
maybe? No maybe about it, unless you meant some are in hell. But yes, they are all dead.
@@taylorrenee4880😂👏
I Dorando Pietri made it through the Pearly Gates, he did so 82 years ago! He died, 1942!
Not one of them is in heaven. It’s a made up place used to satisfy brainwashed people.

Wrong
They added 385 to the finish so the royal lot could see the end.
Cost Dorando Pietri the gold medal.
@@graemestarkey7524 Wrong. The extra 365 yrds was at the start of marathon, directly under the window of the Queen at Windsor castle,
The distance of the London 1908 marathon became the official distance of the marathon (42195m) starting from 1921.

There doesn't appear to be a ladder to the diving boards!
Ladder? That's for softies! The degree of difficulty was marked by the scale of the ascent!
MAGIC TIMES !!
Tennis… in a dress? That sounds painful.
I think the tennis was held at Withdean Stadium in Brighton…
Former Brighton n Hove Stadium?
It was played at the old Worple Road AELTC stadium in Wimbledon. Think it's an allotment now.
I wonder how deep (or shallow) that diving pool was.
10m
Now all I want to know is who was the first female Olympian to forgo wearing a dress to their event. Somone at some point went renegade and put on some shorts.
Swimming 1912. Baron de Coubertin hated it.
Based they had women compete, honestly didn’t expect that from a competition in the 1900s
Se veían muy exigentes físicamente... más que exigentes, muy difíciles y hasta peligrosos jajaja
No seas, eso parece gimansia para menores
The guy at 3:25 has skipped work

Please tell me in the long jump they didn't jump into cow crap?
It was the only thing they had at the time for a soft landing...

The female athlete dresses have gotten a lot less restrictive.
Now they are showing butt cheeks
I wonder what NBC/Peacock paid for to telecast this snoozefest ?.
you mean first modern Olympic games 😀
The first were in 1896 in Athens

When you realise that all these people in this video are dead now
Olímpiadas decente ahora vulgar
No soft air matt to land on back then. Built tougher.
...but they weren't going over 6 metres!
There would have been more fatalities than finishers, lol!
Прыжок с шестом приземление на ноги😮😮😮 они нормальные были?😂
There's only like 4 people in the stands 😂
Was spectating the games for rich people only?

@@Lava1964 very interesting. Do you know why it only picked up later on?
In the early Olympics the football (soccer) crowds were vital financial pillars.
Muito amadores estranho tipo de competições.
Back to the days when people understood dignity and respect even for those we with whom we disagree. Those days are gone.
Tell that to the blacks in Jim Crow south....
Umm didn’t WW1 happen soon after?
Tell that to the colonies…
WW1 was just 6 years later my dude
You ever heard of something called history?
Back when people knew the difference between males and females.
and the ladies were so elegant
Back then nobody would have called the Algerian boxer a male since we did not know about chromosomes.
Interestingly enough 2012 in London was when the trans stuff got pushed and when a trans was in the Olympics.
@@thecensoredmuscle563 The women's 100m in 1932 was won by a woman with XY chromosomes.
