The way it was taught to me is that slightly below your bellybutton there's an organ called 'Kikai,' which stores the Ki and regulates the amount of Ki traveling trough your meridians. When doing a kiai, one must; first tense their kikai (lower abs), then their mid-abs and sides, then their higher abs (suigetsu) and that way "force" the air (or ki if you will) out of your mouth. Then, after the strike one is to stop the airflow with the muscles in their throat to avoid unnecessary waste of air. (Or, again, Ki-energy if you will.) It is hard to do that silently, so the silent kiai can only be achieved through disciplined practice. Despite knowing 'how' to do the kiai, I still sound like a complete fool when doing it. I genuinely have no idea what I'm doing wrong. It doesn't sound badass like the other kenshi, it sounds like a darn chicken choking on a peanut or something. I don't know if I really need advice (since the point is not to sound cool) but I would really appreciate some guidance. (From any of you, not necessarily just from Sensei Enkamp.) Cheers!
In chinese martial arts the area you're referring to is your dantian, which gets a similar explanation. This is why your belt knot sits roughly in that area. It's your center of gravity. The next time you throw a punch, or push someone or something, treat this center area like you would your hips. The entire cavity of the stomach. Your body will still rotate, but you'll have power like you stepped as well even though you're static. Throwing this point means you're essentially throwing all your weight rather than swinging roughly half from the hip. Might take some practice though to see how an area in the center of your body moving turns the rest of it. The stomach tension comes from the sound, and not necessarily voluntary contraction through conscious effort. If you want a deeper sound, well it'll be similar to deepening your voice on the way out. The important thing is that the sound is quick and sharp, to fully engage the core.
@@jesper5456 interesting facts to add to my knowledge xD Guess I'll look into that specifically and see if there's anything that it would change with how I function or if it'd just be useful for further explanations.
If you're striking for power or speed, make the sound quick and sharp. The faster the sound, the faster the contraction. This is why boxers make that hissing noise when they punch, to tighten the core at contact. Long drawn out screams make slower contractions, turning strikes more into pushes. The sound and contraction unifies the lower and upper body during striking. In most cases I normally just exhale sharply out the nose but in general I'd say the "boxers hiss" is the easiest way to engage like the lower areas of the core without needing to think about it. Gives meaning to the phrase power comes from the breath. Breath with assistance from the stomach to maintain endurance. Exhale sharp with assistance of the stomach to create power.
I use the "KIAI" with certain techniques in my Shiatsu school and that came from my Shotokan Karate training in the Netherlands when I was younger so I will share this video with my students if you don't mind. You do it so well and with a good explanation. We talk about "Hara" when delivering a "KIAI".
In Kyusho Jitsu we practice Kiai, Kiai is a sound Whit intention , mental intention , but the sound is a form of energy too, this " sound" or vibration afect the nerve system and we can use to afect the other person , the part of kiai without sound is very important too .
Well thanks a lot! You had me practice kiai by coughing. I went to the doctor for a checkup yesterday. He told me to turn my head and cough. I did a kiai, frightened the doctor, he jerked back, and now my name is Mary.
This seems like a good way to get over the "KIAI!!!" screaming phase that many people go through when they start karate ^_^ I shall try this out the next time I have to explain kiai to beginners :P
Phonetically, the K sound stops the air before it gets out. NO consonant, just vowel: AY, EE or OO. For a time I was shouting "HAI" [Japanese "yes"']. It constricted my energy. Dropping the H produced the flow.
Thanks Jesse. Perhaps you’l revisit this with examples. Anytime I hear a competition kiai it isn’t. It’s a throaty scream, loud and drawn out. There is a mechanical aspect to the tension caused by the kiai and the time of the strike. Most of what I hear is so drawn out that there should be two punches and recovery. One can have very strong intent in a strike with a very short and fairly quiet kiai. Volume is not critical and I think more energy is wasted on theatrics than the position this practice holds in executing a strike. Listen to the quick and quiet kiai of a power puncher in a boxing match. This is quiet similar to a kiai and serves a similar purpose. Try doing a Mike Tyson three punch combo breathing as a boxer is trained to do and then try the same with a long keee-aiiiiiiii but punch the combo hard and at spread. Holding the yell actually puts mental brakes on recovery and the next punch in the combo. Well, I imagine I’ve managed to make 75% of the karate practioners made at me except for the old school Okinawan stylists. Not my intent even if it’s inevitable in the intraweb dojo.
Arigatou gozaimasu Jesse...that was really helpful for me as I have just begun Karate lessons here in Queensland, Australia...I will practise for my lesson this afternoon..
Yes and no. as a matter of fact dont listen to this guy. If you have to train this, it is to early. I would have you actually be a martial artist first.... An actor later. You will learn it naturally. No need to take a norweigians view on a very ASIAN thing. how you scream in battle to receive power is up to you.... Dont look like youre jacking off in your bedroom. This is hilarious. Be a man. This fucking guy though...... tsk tsk tsk
HiDroVlogs just do it. Don't worry if it sounds weird. my teacher used to sound like a dying person when he did the kiai and it was terrifying. but i guess thats the point
HiDroVlogs hi don't worry just do it, people will look at you but don't take it seriously, when I started karate my sensai took me to a playground and to do this in front of everyone lol 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 at first it feels odd but you'll be used to it after a little time
HiDroVlogs try feeling angry or frustrated. Think of the most important people in your life being attacked and your about to strike at whoever is harming them. Anger is a very powerful source of adrenaline and power once controlled
Thank you so much. I needed that. I feel kind of silly when doing it. And I think most of the women, especially the young ones got difficulties to let out a scream. And I kept wondering what word it is they scream. I feel a lot better now. Thanks 🙏 😊
Can you try every vocals"ae, ai, eia, aei, iai, io", etc, the open vocals are made to the air travel, in this form you can expand and contract better the diafragm

I don’t think he meant any disrespect. I watch his channel, he is very respectful of Jesse
chill man, he is jesse's friend and a very nice guy. plus i don't smell anything sarcastic in his comment. don't be too serious on everything.
Wow my 2 favorites watch each other?!?!?!?!?! Awesome!!!
