I read this book about a month ago and still need to review it. I thought it was beautifully written but like you said it wasn't totally captivating in the respect that I wasn't desperate to carry on reading. I've read Mr Norris Changes Trains too which was originally supposed to be published with Goodbye to Berlin in one big volume and didn't enjoy that as much. I have A Single Man and look forward to reading that and seeing what his writing is like in a different place and time. Great review:)
Yeah I never got around to watching the film and now I'm glad I didn't so I can read the book first. I look forward to watching it after I've read the book though :)
Thanks. I've only seen the movie of A Single Man and thought it was awesome. But it somehow stops me from picking up the book...It's one of those situations where knowing the story seems enough...
great review, after I listened to you, I realised this is not the book that gave the film Goodbuy Lenin, I think it sounds interesting and added to my TBR list!
School. I was tortured with the politics of that time in history class to the point that I totally lost interested in it. But most of my school education was during the Cold War, so not sure if the syllabus changed. My class had to watch this horrible shocking film 'Bei Nacht und Nebel' which focuses on the transport of Jews to the concentration camps. Now that's a horror film if ever I saw one!
loved his writing style. couldn’t put it down.
I still need to read more by him, thanks for reminding me of his writing :)
These were originally six separate short stories that comprise the book.
oh I diddn't know that, thanks for sharing.

I didn't know he wrote that, I saw the film and loved it!
Yes, that film was awesome!
He also wrote A Single Man, have you read it? It's one of my favorite books :)

No it's not, I think Cabaret is based on this book.

It is. And it was a fast read.
This sounds fascinating.
I've always wondered how you Germans learn about the World Wars (specially the second)?
