- The Fate (or weird in scots) of the three arrows, is an old Scottish tale which revolves around Sir James Douglas. He was known to be one of the greatest knights in Scotland. This was not for his ability to command man, but for his mastery of fear as a tool of war and his personal ferocity in battle. There were very few English men that crossed swords with Douglas and lived to tell the tale. Many in Scotland knew him as Good Sir James as he had always championed Bruce’s claim for the throne. For years Douglas would hold the border between Scotland and England. On many occasions he would lead raiding parities south into Northumbria. The English of the border feared Sir Douglas so much, they thought of his as some form of demon. It was then he was given the moniker of the Black Douglas, since all the people of England knew that death followed wherever the Douglas went. One Night while the Black Douglas was stationed in Jedburgh, he met a strange old woman who engaged him in a quest of revenge.

My all time hero. I took my 3 daughters to visit his tomb in Teba Spain where he fell fighting the Moors on his journey with Bruce’s heart to the holy land.
❤❤❤ Surname Dicks and Sir James Douglas is one of my ancestors as well!❤️❤️❤️
A great telling of a Classic tale...my ancient relatives ,
My 20th Great Grandfather - very proud family, we're Douglas, Stuarts and Bruces.
American Douglas here. Love learning our history. 🏴
I’m proud to say I’m a descendent of Sir James Douglas! We’ve got the family tree and ancestry paperwork to prove it. Even the 23 & Me results I did in high school for a family tree project shows my family is mostly from the area. My granddad along the Douglas line has an antique sample of the Tartan, not from that long ago but a bit later when most of the family was still in the area. I want to visit his ruined tower one day…
If you ever win a fight make sure you yell in your opponent’s face “Say my fookin name!”
Sweet Potato the Black
He"s my 15th great grandfather. You're probably one of my distant cousins. Small word.
I also am a direct descendant of the great sir James thanks for doing such a great video
im not sure im a direct descendant but pretty close, good to see yall.
The more Scottish history that I learn the more I love respect Scotland and its people bunch of badasses from America respect
One thing I love to reflect on is the fact we have never truly been conquered. The Romans, the Norse, and the English all tried to conquer but they best they could do was either build big walls to keep us out or sign treaties. Albeit those treaties ended up not being so good for the Scots.
The Norse men did settle in parts of Scotland & our islands
Douglas doesn’t get enough credit respect for getting our history out there mate
i am a proud Dickson.I know of my ancestors The Keith's and Douglas and am proud of Thomas and the Good Sir Douglas
I'm also proud to say Sir James is approximately my 20th Great grandfather. This is an excellent video. Thank you.
Stephen Douglas Greer ll
Love my ancestors, love my ancestory , if it were not for them I would not be here! Sending love from Canada to all my Douglas clansmen and Descendents of Scotland
A wonderful tale in Scottish Folklore, well told Liath Wolf. In particular of the bold and brave Border Laird Sir James Douglas.
My direct ancestor Thomas Dickson fought alongside Sir James Douglas in the retaking of Castle Douglas in 1307. Unfortunately Thomas Dickson received a wound across his belly and was seen holding his belly to hold his guts in while fighting on with his sword with his other hand. He finally succumbed to his wounds that day Sunday 1307. He and his family were givin lands from Robert the Bruce for his loyalty and bravery in battle in perpetuity.
Awesome story. I actually know the tale quite well, Thomas was a great warrior and brave fighter.
@@LiathWolf I actually seen this battle in a movie recently...It was called the Outlaw King on Netflix. I am coming to Scotland in June to visit for 10 days. I hope to visit the Douglas area and St Brides churchyard where they both are buried. Thank you for your great content.
As a Drysdale, my roots trace back to the Douglas clan. Three Douglas brothers in the 1400s got into a territorial dispute with the Johnston clan and a number of Johnston's ended up dead. The King of Scotland at the time was friends with the Johnston clan, and sought to bring retribution to the Douglas Brothers. They fled and hid from the King. They settled near a small river called the dryfe River and changed their name to Drysdale. Today the Drysdale parish sits near Lockerbie Scotland and is a location of a memorial built for passengers that died from the Lockerbie bombing.
As a descendant of Sir James Douglas, I thank you for keeping his legend alive.
So much for the taunt of a knight of gascony.
That black douglas shield and outfit is so cool. I think Scotland should use it more. I'm going to get that flag.
A Douglas! A Douglas! Clan DICKSON checking in
Hail Sir William
Hail King Robert
Remember the name Douglas
Douglas, an absolute legend.
Totally I live on whats left of one of his many .
We knew him as the good... only the English he was black
. He was a killer...
Given thanks at the hero's tomb in Douglas a few times. May we never forget.
I'm a BALLANTYNE Scottish and Welsh BALLANTYNE come from Lanarkshire and they come from clan Douglas we are still here us Celtic from are families
My grandmother was a Douglass. ❤ She was strong and good. When I was young a bull came in our yard. I was scared! But she just walked out there and told it to go home and it did quickly. I thought she was magic.. Thank you very much.
We might be related then if she was related to the black Douglas you're Grandma sounds brave cool story
Douglass isn’t as common these days the second S seems to have been dropped at some point when I start my family tree I’ll find hopefully if this is the case as my paternal gran is a Douglas . But I’m dead curious to find out who else is in my tree on both sides Scotland & Ireland.
The Black Douglas and their likes fill your arms with goosebumps and our hearts with thanks. Great story telling laddie.
You're a true storyteller. I hope the success you deserve finds you.
This was brilliant. Thank you. Please consider doing one on the Battle of the North Inch.
Scottish history has always fascinated me. I could listen to a Scottish accent telling stories forever! Thanks for the great content.
I feel exactly the same. There's something magical in the air when I listen to Scottish legends, stories with Scottish accent.
Came here after rewatching The Outlaw King. I was so hoping that they’d make a sequel starring Jame Douglas. It would have been gruesomely epic!
Douglas, Edmund , Wallace , Bruce all warriors. If only someone will take to the sword today.
Would you join them mo chara?
Great story, and love the use of Monty Python. Not to mention Black Adder.
This was recommended by my mom and im not disappointed !
I'm a descendant of him. The coat of arms is on top of our dresser and we have the Douglas book, which has the family tree. my grandmother also brandished the surname of Douglas and my brothers first and middle name is James Douglas. According to my father it is the only Douglas book.
5:36 LMAO😂 I did not expect to see such a period-accurate portrayal of the messenger! Bravo, you got me good with that one.
Thanks for your Video. I am of the line of the Black Douglas through my maternal Grandmother who was the Cousin of Lord Douglas, She married my Grandfather who was of the line of Gunn. My coat of arms that Sir James Father William hung over the gates of Berwick when he tried in vain to defend it against Edward the beast Longshanks Army. the over ran the town butchering everyone,, leaving their bodies where they fell for months as punishment. He also sent William Douglas to London to die in the Bloody tower. In Berwick he had a Bulls privates cut off and nailed onto the white area beneath the three stars on the Douglas Sheild over the city gates. An insult neither forgiven nor forgotten by my family.
A true hero of a grateful nation
These are great pal, from a transplanted Scot in Canada.
It's great to hear of the histories of my ancestor the black douglas
You're also a descendent of the Black Douglas?
@@aidan341 yes down my mother's line, to what extent I have know idea, but my grandad, always talked about it when I was growing up
I myself am a Douglass and have never been happier to hear folklore about my family in my life! Amazing video!

Love the videos big yin, I can imagine the Black Douglas would be spinning in his grave if he saw Scotland now
Thankyou for this incredible story. Sincerely, a proud Douglas!
this legend gave me chills! He granted the lady her vengeance without even realizing it.
The Messenger, haha. Your clips are great. Great work, thank you so much.
Just found this. Thank you for this story.
Thank you for keeping our storytelling tradition alive. JR
Thank you. High time his story was told.
That the English thought he was a supernatural demon tells you of his martial prowess.
Love this video!
Fantastic....Enlightening...Keep it up Bro...
My Grandmother was (deceased) a Des Moines, Iowa Douglas, direct descendence. Live in Minnesota.
Thank you I love hearing you tell these story's your voice reminds me of my grandmumpsies it brings a lot of pride hearing these story's.
We are in great need of story tellers. You are indeed one of them! Thank you!
I am part of the Fae folk. This warms the cockles of my heart. Thank you. Gail McFarlane
Thank you for this story..
I'm just a whisper past the ten minute mark. I'm hoping the Douglas planted on of the old ladies arrows into each of the killing strikes on the three English leaders. I don't recall the woman saying she wanted the arrows to be the cause of death? Didn't she simply say she wanted to return the arrows to the English the same way they came to her?
Back to the tale.
Love the Holy Grail footage!
You had 1000 subs when you made this. You now have 10,000💪🏻

Thank you for an informative, entertaining video. My mother was a Douglas. I can confirm that the last thing you would want to do is cross a Douglas.
thank ya great vid bradley james
Excellent. it's nice to learn more about Scotland.
I found this story fascinating for the truth part and the folk tale too as a descendet of Sir James Douglas I am proud and honored
Your episode on our Cat-Sidhe and Ghillie Dhu was enough to win me over. May the Cat-Sidhe bless your efforts and the Ghillie Dhu clear your path.
Thanks
Our ancestry paper shows our great great great ancestor Sir Duncan Adam was with Sir James Douglas with the task of carrying Robert the Bruce's heart to the Holyland
Truly captivating
fascinating.
I love hearing about brave men like Douglass! I love hearing about anyone who would stand up to the English.
I can't help but think, though, that the old woman was inspired by one of the war goddesses. Her appearance, her commission, and the coincidence of the English coming to fight the Douglass just afterwards sounds like one of the war goddesses' machinations.
Very fun tale!
Your channel is criminally under-subscribed. 🙄 Love your stories - keep up the good work.
Thank you! 😊
Fabulous tale.. and well told thank you..

Such a dark story full of history of violence and war told in such a beautiful manner! Thank you!
I've been watching several of your videos. I subscribed just before the end of this tale. Visiting Scotland is a "bucket list dream" of mine. If I never get that opportunity, you and you're wonderful ability to to tell a great story have taken my heart there already. I wish you success, and I look forward to following your channel. I call you...blessed ❤
Video was awesome brother. Thank you for this.
My pleasure, thanks for watching
Great video thanks
Great video, a story I hadn’t heard until now but glad i’ve come across it 🏴
I do love The Black Douglas, as well as his arch Nemesis, Beaumont. The Scots would remember forever the way he taught them, up on Dupplin Moor, after De Brus had passed. They paid dearly for their arrogance and pride up there, they were left in steaming heaps, a spear's length in height. The English out-maneuvered, out-played, and out-fought them, all whilst outnumbered and cut off from escape or supply. James Douglas wouldn't have made much difference up there, but he was a canny fox, that's for sure. You're welcome. 💯👁💪
Wow thanks,
That was great.
My mother on her father's side is Scottish. Im 5th gen in America. Know very very little about that whole side.Always wishes to Know more.. But alas.
They came in through Canada. The first relatives here, their son was born on the ship. For that he (baby) was offered free passage for life time. But never went back.
Instead he( name was James) went on to fight for the north in the civil war. Amd obviously lived.... And thats my story.thats all i know.
Thanks for listening.
Blessings to you.🌎
Thanks and thats a great story. There were many who left scotland during the clearances and a large proportion went to Canada.

As a Serbian i most respect Scotish and Irish people! I'm telling you, we are the same! Come close to the serbian history, and you will find the answer!
Just commenting to help out the channel a bit more !! But really am loving they good clear concise way youre telling the stories , for me, I'd be happy with a few more in depth stories thrown in every now and then , ie documentary type style ? Like 45 minute videos, going full deep dive into certain things that deserve it, even some of the subjects you've covered already I want to hear even kmore about them ! Anyway keep it up youre doing a great job of getting our lore out there !
