    Somehow I missed that this Case for Making version of indigo is actually the synthetic version!

      Sadie! I ordered some Warm Indigo from Arkaar Creations on etsy and boy am I Pleased! Thank You so Much for doing this video! I didn't know my pallet was missing this Beautiful color but am Terribly glad I have it now! I got two pans and then with shipping it really wasn't all that outrageous, quite affordable! I'm "Saturday Night Live dancing" happy! 💃🤹‍♀️🤸‍♀️🎨🖌😄🤗😄👍👍

      Indigo's always been a favorite of mine! I haven't heard of most of these paints. I have the Sennelier and QoR, and am starting a black panther closeup (to raise awareness and get them out of zoos into the wild again, which they _mostly_ are but imo none should be locked up). *Realized they were jaguars with brown fur rosettes!* and found an excellent photo (a non-zooed animal)... but realized indigo, or "my" indigos, wouldn't work. (Eh, you learn something; that's cool.)
      So I opted for a Payne's grey and am painting like, one hair at a time almost (cause I'm new to wc still and want it 'right'). Glad you showed a Payne's grey as an option: I was guessing and didn't want ink or black. Getting these (very dark) browns "in" the fur of payne's grey just can't make my guy "Muddy Panther!" #HaveNoIdeaWhatImDoing 😂❤️️ LOVE your pigment infos! Subbed. Love!

    This is a good showcase for how great monotones are for botanical subjects! I grow all sorts of orchids, being a lifelong orchid and botany nerd, but was never satisfied with my paintings of them until I did one using just Payne's grey. Using just variations of tone and hydration to render form and texture made everything pop like never before. So I do much more monotone and very restricted palette stuff now. (O how it makes me feel sophisticated and superior LOL! No but it does put a spring in my step when a sketch is that exciting and rewarding.)

    So far, hands down , u have created THE BEST color/pigment schooling on you tube. In my humble opinion, better than all the rest.

    Thank you for making this video.This video was super helpful. And that quick landscape was gorgeous too. Indigo is one of my favourites and also one that I was really interested in knowing more about. I wanted a genuine indigo for so long and came across the arkaar one. The warm indigo is just really gorgeous. I love Indigo being a part of an earth tone palette too. I love that colour right alongside sepia(another fav) . I have a cooler Payne's grey so I often drop both indigo and Payne's grey on wet paper to create really dramatic skies. Indigo just never disappoints 😍.

    It's incredible how dark the case for making and stoneworks indigo paints are. I wish I could wave a magic wand and make most of these lightfast lol. I love DS Kyanite and Sodalite for this type of color for the granulation and the freedom to sell art without worrying about the lightfastness, but I am very tempted to just play with that lovely Vivianite by Limn! This was an incredibly in-depth comparison, so many swatches. Gorgeous painting and thank you so much for all this info!!!

    • @SadieSavestheDay
      @SadieSavestheDay  5 лет назад

      OMG aren’t they so crazy dark? I had to be really careful when mixing because they would overpower Mixes all the time. I haven’t tried sodalite yet, but I really want to. It looks so nice. Limn’s vivianite is 👌🏿! Thank you so much! 😊

    awesomely helpful & informative video! I don't know why, but I'm really drawn to those intensely dark, somewhat muted colors like Indigo, perylene green, perylene & Napthamide maroon, Indanthrone Blue & Prussian Blue.
    I love that you show tons of comparison swatches and mixtures! It's especially nice for those lovely colors that are unfortunately not lightfast.

      I love learning about the natural elements that are used for coloring. It was funny when you said stinky was ok, it made me think of pigments made with crushed bugs. I'll have to look up what they use for indigo, I'm not sure I'm familiar with it. As a graphic designer I was always told blue and orange were the hardest colors to achieve naturally.

    Fascinating and loved your paintings too, especially the little landscape. I have a couple of real indigos and a synthetic one. I don't think the latter really recreates the colour or the way it handles. One of my reals is the Nila Colori which I am saving for a particular project, as many of their colours will be fragile in spite of the work that has gone into them. I just love how different they are. The only other thing I have found that gives the kind of payoff real indigo has isn't a paint at all it is a Japanese ink. Some of your examples of the real thing are beautiful.

    Thank you for showing how close some of the Paynes Grays are to true indigo, especially QoR's. I have always liked their Paynes Gray but didn't think of it when I was considering mixing my own indigo hue. I think it is closer than anything I could mix! Interestingly, their Indigo uses the same pigments as their Paynes Grey, but the Paynes seems closer looking to real indigo; their indigo is rather more blue-green. (A mix of their Indigo and their Paynes might be perfect - except for the pigment separation, which I love but isn't true to real indigo.) Anyway, this is such a great video - thanks!

    Very comprehensive, and explained very clearly. A great service for the watercolour community! Would have loved to see a notation next to each, giving lightfastness info. Even if it’s just opinion, I know it’s tricky with different assessment spectrums. I love indigo so much, but refuse to use fugitive pigments (I have enough issues with my talent, I don’t need my decent paintings to fade/change over time!). I wonder if anyone can suggest a ‘top 3’ most lightfast Indigo-ish options from the list? I’d be sooooo grateful!

    Love indigo, thanks for the spotlight on handmade colors and explaining about the natural and synthetic indigos. FYI, Maimeri Blu has a NB1 indigo in their line, which might be a little more accessible for many as handmade colors are often out of stock or too expensive for many artists. Also, can you please explain about what brands have PY174 (or did you mean PY74?) and PO25 from the mixing chart? Couldn't find any info on those pigments. Thanks!
