R3.8bn for 'missing middle' students

The government has set aside a R3.8 billion fund to support "missing middle" students as part of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. On Sunday, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande revealed that the funding model is divided into two phases. Nzimande says the revised financial model will ensure that the missing middle can access financial support to pursue their studies. According to Nzimande, the loan is expected to fund 70% of students studying science, maths and technology programmes, while only 30% would be for humanities programmes.
