Fantastic in-depth review Joey! You deserve the sub especially for the push for the Retroid Flip 2. They can take all my money if they improve the Flip build quality and make it OLED and put the Mini/5 specs in.
The sole aspect of this review that Joey got wrong is that I only have ONE Anbernic handheld staring at me. One! It's a beautiful one too. It's the RG35XX-SP in that transparent blue. Zu and GoGameGeek partnered to do a giveaway back in July and the winner would be announced when the contest video hit certain metrics. I assume that it did because Zu reached out to me last week and said that I won. It arrived a couple of days later and it's been wonderful to play. It's pretty obvious that Joey, and probably a fair number of other people in this community, have become jaded because they've played with every H700 Anbernic under the sun; but, this is my first Anbernic and I've really been enjoying it. It's got a slick OS, it plays a lot of the stuff I care about, and it's super comfortable - comfortable to use and comfortable to front pocket with my phone. Also, the HDMI port is an inspired addition that adds a lot of flexibility. Every handheld and phone should have some form of wired video out. I'm pretty enthused about the Retroid Pocket Mini thanks in large part to receiving that SP from Zu. Getting the Anbernic SP made me realize that the perfect handheld for me isn't a big chunky boy with a lunch tray sized screen. Rather; the perfect handheld is a reasonably compact unit with a 3.5-4.0 inch screen, solid power, decent battery life, and "video out" capabilities. Why lug around a monster sized device sporting a monster sized screen all of the time? Or why go through the trouble of buying multiple sizes of handhelds and then have to go through the trouble of syncing saves, learning the ins-and-outs of multiple OSes, and whatnot? Why do this when you can just buy one right sized device that's big enough to see and hold comfortably, small enough to be pocket portable, and that can be expanded greatly in scope simply by plugging it into a TV or monitor that one already has? The Mini, not the 5, is peak Retroid. A Pocket Mini SP would be even better. Do it, Retroid. Do it!

Glad to have you back. I'm sure you will enjoy the rp5, considering its a like a 556 controls and screen wise, with performances, autonomy and compatibility of this one.
3:14 made me realize how overprotective I am of my handhelds. My heart rate went up a little when I saw you tilting them directly on what looks like jagged concrete 😅
The OLED display turns off the black pixels automatically, because it's part of the organic pixels technology. So I just bought the black Retroid Pocket 5, and it will be perfect to play 4:3 games, because the device is all black, and the borders will get turned off, it's much better to play on a lager screen like this than with the Retroid Pocket Mini. Though, the RPMini is perfect for portability. It's the size of a PSP, but running Nintendo Switch games.
Usually I have some misgivings about switching from one Retroid to the next, like preferring the analog stick on top, or the sliders on the Flip. Switching from the 2S to the Mini is the first one where there is NO downside for me. Even one of my biggest gripes with the 3 and 2S models (the walls around the analog sticks obstructing rubber grips) isn't an issue anymore. I thought I preferred the boxy design of the 2+ and 2S models, but just holding this thing is way more comfortable. The glass screen doesn't have me constantly cleaning smudges off of it, now does the shell itself, which was especially bad on the black 2+. The analog sticks have some give to them and don't feel overly sensitive.
Joey I know you’re the most honest guy on RUclips and actually respond to your chat. So I was wondering should I get the retroid 5 or Odin 2 I want to get one of them..
Ah that's interesting! I can't say yet on the 5, but ask me again after that review in a few weeks if I don't answer it :) I wouldn't pull the trigger just yet on the O2 as the 5 might just be a great choice.
Thank you so much I’ll check back then I heard it will be better then the Odin 2 I don’t want the mini I see how much you like this device so I know it’s good just need bigger screen for my eyes..😊
@@Lisa313shoe It won't be better than the Odin 2 performance wise or battery, but the screen should be and the performance should be good enough. It'll be a good comparison!
I will definitely say that where the Pocket MiNi & Pocket 5 is at. It’s safe to say that I’m good here even though not all 3DS, Switch, or even PS Vita would work good on here. I pretty much wanted to play PS2 & GameCube on the Go anyway.
Got the GC colorway RP5 early bird instead of the RP Mini cuz the 4:3 3.7 inch screen is just a lil bit too small for what I want to play which is mainly PS2 & GC. I still might get an RP Mini sometime next year just because the SFC colorway looks so good to me (although the 16 bit European Super Nintendo colorway looks great too). Glad that the gameplay is awesome and the screen looks great
Good to have you back Joey ! I've enjoyed your review ! I'm so torned with the Rp5, i have to make quick before the promotion code end's up but i also want to wait for your review :'(
Dude , you are always my go-to for reviews and vids. Great job on this video. I need you to do a comparison between retrobat, launchbox, emudeck and the other windows front ends. I can't decide which to use for my Rog ally x
Nice review, mate. Don't usually comment but I ordered one through your link to help out a bit. Just like with my silly faith in the Miyoo Flip over the Anbernic SP, I was holding out on Anbernic's inevitable answer to this with the RG406P for the bigger screen (I'm not fussed about OLED). However, the likelihood of it having 'just another' T820 chip and a less-likely revision of their obnoxiously loud buttons from recent devices pushed me to just buy this as the definitive 4:3 device. Yes, it would have been perfect at 4-4.5" but it's the closest we're going to get for a little while I believe. I also don't think Anbernic has the same build quality it once had since the 353 line and below. Whereas Retroid did great with the RP4/Pro and has fine tuned controls now. Anbernic, sadly, seem to constantly make devices with at least one glaring concession. On a separate note, I'd like to see Retroid try a Mini Flip! The sticks recessed into a pocketable SP frame (slimmer than the 35XX SP) with their signature d-pad would be incredible.
My 353p just died. I genuinely loved it. The look, the feel, the idea of dual booting ArkOS and Android. I even had the play store up and running on it, but the android side was really rough to use. Motherboard died on me though, I got a little under a year out of it. Thinking this is my more expensive drop in replacement. I guess we'll see.
I would really love a device like this is if didn't a a full-face glass front. That is the only reason I didn't order one and what ruined it for me. Smudges all day
After seeing RGC's review of this device, and now seeing you just beaming talking about it, i think i might have to pull the trigger and get my first Android handheld (and first Android device overall tbh). For what it is, it just seems so perfect. You just don't see complete home-run releases like this in this hobby. (And i'm not super interested in getting a widescreen device since i don't feel like i would really utilize the extra space.) I would also be super interested in the three-way head-to-head between this, the Odin 2 Mini, and the RP5 when it comes out. I was previously tempted by the Odin 2 Mini, but the price tag scared me off.
It's nice to see Super mario sunshine looks gorgeous on this screen. Though I wouldn't be surprised if this video returns later with a bunch of games blurred out.
I think RP this year done a good job. Instead giving us "+" or Pro variant, they give Mini 4:3 variant. Same performance with different taste. Im toward 16:9 screen because of convenient. Well they can go crazy with Flip, using mainscreen from 5, and secondary from Mini. If they can.
Best review of this handheld along side retro game corps. But i have to say this review is wonderful and more straightforward! 🤝 i cant wait to see ur review on the rp5 im planning to get that for my older brother for Christmas!
what sold me on the Mini is that most of the games I'm gonna play are 4:3 and the size of the play field will be the same on the RP5 but with larger letterboxing
It's not though. A 5.5" 16:9 screen is 2.7" tall (with 3.6" width of 4:3 content at that height) - exactly equally to a 4.5" screen at 4:3 ratio. Would have a .6" letterbox on either side (full screen is 4.8" wide) A 3.7" 4:3 screen is 2.2" tall (and 3" wide). That's almost 25% more height and 33% more 4:3 screen area (6.6sqin vs 9.72sqin) on the RP5. Plus a lot of those newer consoles can be ran with widescreen hacks if they didn't support it natively, plus consoles like 3DS benefit from extra screen space. Anyways, this is very much wrong
How's the software vs the ayaneo pocket S? - it's going to be very hard going back to retroid's clunky software if they hadn't improved from the 4 pro. I HATED shifting back and forth between the two controller layouts in the settings. With the ayaneo it just *worked*. Is that fixed on this?
Joey's back! Hope your enjoyed your vacay! Edit: 0:18, DUDE! Do you really wanna do that? 3:35 Dude... you might wanna re-upload this, I'm worried for you!
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Welcome back! You sure about showing Nintendo IP? I know you've been gone a while but you had to be on top of the news lately lol. Dude... I'd feel much better if you just blurred the video at parts or something, don't take the chance, man. Looks like you're rubbing it in Nintendo's face. I dunno, man! I dunno!
The H700 devices have their place. In my country, $200 plus shipping is just way too much for a device like this. I have a Switch wich used is a great value, and as a secondary handheld the cheap RG35XX-H is a perfect combo for my needs. On my Switch, I play first-party and older third-party games like Red Dead and Bioshock, and the H is my PS1 machine. I don't need a device for GameCube or PS2 because on the road, I don’t have the time to play big games. But if I use the train for longer distances, I usually bring my Switch with me.
Retroid and AYN are kings in retro handhelds. I love my retroid pocket flip and I have also been waiting for the 2 to come out in the future! The future of gaming and portability will be clamshells I feel and retroid has the best one in the flip. I want more powerful retro handheld that is android or even Linux if they can pull it off! You forgot to mention we may get batocera and Xbox support for this and the 5!!
If it's a handheld & it's QD-Mini LED Full Array Backlight LCD & not just Mini LED LCD, then I prefer that over OLED because it will get brighter for outdoor play & no burn-in worries. Plus QD-Mini LED colors are just about as vibrant if not IMHO & blacks are almost as dark. But this handheld is just too small for me, I prefer something around 5.5" to 7" big.
Can't wait to get my preorder. Even considering a second unit because I love 2 of the colorways equally (Black & Saturn). The 5 looks fantastic but I specifically want a small, pocketable device.
It is less, noisy than my Xbox controller, good to see you, I hope your vacation was good. The fan is similar to my other devices. this guy will be my pocket device, I'm excited.
im pretty much sold on this guy, just waiting for comparisons with the 5 and to see android 13 and linux perform on it. going to be upgrading from a flip
Thanks for sharing, Joey. How is the battery life? With a 4000 mAh battery, how many hours can you game for, for the different systems? Can you please do a battery test and report the findings, as I feel that this a significant factor to many people. Thanks!
I love this review so much and I love the device a lot... Which made me want to buy the upcoming RP5 even more :D I will take the larger screen over portability! have a nice day

Is the fire dungeon in Zelda WW laggy ? Are there sone tweaks we should know about to enjoy WW fully with munimum issues ? Can't wait to receive mine ☺️ thanks for the review !!
Only thing I wish they could offer is the option to have the joystick and dpad switched. For whatever reason I don't mind playing d-pad centric games when it is lower but playing joystick games when the left joystick is down low is just so uncomfortable to me. Probably still gonna buy it tho, finally a 4:3 device that has some beef.
The retroid pocket 5 is going to be the best device for the price, the odin 2 and 2 mini still will be the best device if money isnt a concern and if you want switch or pc emulation.
Really wish Anbernic releases a successor to the RG280V with the same exact build quality but better color options, wifi, and processor to flawlessly play PS1 titles
Joey, thanks for showing us a little Switch! I know the Odin 2's are significantly more powerful, but do you think Switch performance is similar between this Retroid processor and the Odin 2's? 🍻
Odin 2 mini hurt my hands. I hated the power and the d-pad on the 2s, loved the form factor. I'm curious about the AyaNeo Pocket Micro. Looking forward to see the RP5. I don't know why they launch this with Android 10. I think that was bad just hold the launch into you update the software.
Great review of a very exciting device! The screen on the RP Mini is a little small for my liking though, so I'm currently trying to decide between an RP5 or an Odin 2 Mini. I'll probably end up with the Odin 2 Mini though, since a couple of my absolute favorite GameCube games are extraordinarily difficult to emulate and I've yet to find any Android handheld chipset other than the SD8 Gen 2 that can throw enough power at them to make them run well and not crash. I'll definitely be looking forward to the RP5 and Odin 2 Mini comparison though! ...And yes, I currently have three H700 devices and an RG556 staring at me XD
@@Neon_Plasma The one everyone knows is Rogue Squadron II, but the big one for me is Star Fox Adventures. That one seems to play just fine on most devices until you get about 20 minutes into it when you take control of Fox McCloud down on Dinosaur Planet, at which point it starts glitching out and crashing every couple minutes on every device I've tried it on except for the Odin 2. Neither the RG556 or RP4 Pro can run it without crashing constantly once you get past the intro and take control of Fox.
I personally can't use handled consoles under 7 inch 😄 This is why I love my steam deck oled for emulation. But this little beautiful handled is great for trips because of the small size.😃
Joey, do you think they will release a metal version of this one ? When i watched your rp2s metal video i fell in love with it but now i am wondering if a rpmini metal will come out. On the other side the rp2s metal is $120 now so do you think the extra cost worth the performance increase?

Even one of my biggest gripes with the 3 and 2S models (the walls around the analog sticks obstructing rubber grips) isn't an issue anymore.
I thought I preferred the boxy design of the 2+ and 2S models, but just holding this thing is way more comfortable.
The glass screen doesn't have me constantly cleaning smudges off of it, now does the shell itself, which was especially bad on the black 2+.
The analog sticks have some give to them and don't feel overly sensitive.
This gets me really hype for the 5. I’m impressed with the performance here
Every RP mini reviews convinced me to get the RP5.
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Oh ok well I thought it was a better chip or something Iam definitely not buying until I hear a review from you ..
I'm so torned with the Rp5, i have to make quick before the promotion code end's up but i also want to wait for your review :'(
Welcome back Joey!
Welcome back man. I missed your videos.
It really looks awesome. Just imagine having this available already 3 or 4 years ago 🤯
Joey telling me I have 5 anbernic devices staring at me hits hard hahaha glad I ordered this one. Hope there are no issues.
900TH LIKE. For sure upgrading form the RP4P to the 5. The screen looks amazing.
Smudges all day
RP2S is an awesome value at $89. One of the best ever.
I love that you have the balls to show switch footage 😂... Mario switch footage lll
Joey is BAAACCKKKK!
Wow Joeys goin in raw dog with NS gameplay 🤣🤣 we support you mate 🫡
After seeing RGC's review of this device, and now seeing you just beaming talking about it, i think i might have to pull the trigger and get my first Android handheld (and first Android device overall tbh). For what it is, it just seems so perfect. You just don't see complete home-run releases like this in this hobby. (And i'm not super interested in getting a widescreen device since i don't feel like i would really utilize the extra space.)
I would also be super interested in the three-way head-to-head between this, the Odin 2 Mini, and the RP5 when it comes out. I was previously tempted by the Odin 2 Mini, but the price tag scared me off.
It's nice to see Super mario sunshine looks gorgeous on this screen. Though I wouldn't be surprised if this video returns later with a bunch of games blurred out.
is this better than the anbernic 406v?
I think RP this year done a good job. Instead giving us "+" or Pro variant, they give Mini 4:3 variant. Same performance with different taste. Im toward 16:9 screen because of convenient.
Well they can go crazy with Flip, using mainscreen from 5, and secondary from Mini. If they can.
Best review of this handheld along side retro game corps. But i have to say this review is wonderful and more straightforward! 🤝 i cant wait to see ur review on the rp5 im planning to get that for my older brother for Christmas!
Yeah I'm tapping out on two videos of 45 mins. No man, I don't wanna do it.
what sold me on the Mini is that most of the games I'm gonna play are 4:3 and the size of the play field will be the same on the RP5 but with larger letterboxing
It's not though. A 5.5" 16:9 screen is 2.7" tall (with 3.6" width of 4:3 content at that height) - exactly equally to a 4.5" screen at 4:3 ratio. Would have a .6" letterbox on either side (full screen is 4.8" wide)
A 3.7" 4:3 screen is 2.2" tall (and 3" wide).
Might be missing something, but it's a toggle on Retroid from swiping down, and on Ayaneo it's in their sidebar then you have to head in a few menus.
Joey's back!
Hope your enjoyed your vacay!
Edit: 0:18, DUDE! Do you really wanna do that?
3:35 Dude... you might wanna re-upload this, I'm worried for you!
I'm back BABY
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Welcome back!
You sure about showing Nintendo IP? I know you've been gone a while but you had to be on top of the news lately lol. Dude... I'd feel much better if you just blurred the video at parts or something, don't take the chance, man.
Looks like you're rubbing it in Nintendo's face. I dunno, man! I dunno!
@@KyleRuggles I'll talk about this briefly on the Newscast, but tldr, nothing changing for me!
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Alright! 🤞🤞🤞🤞
I thought they were shipping now?
Had to check back to see if this is still up. And it is!
Phew! For now.
lol it's not going anyway, that issue was an individual issue, not widespread
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds Well it looks to appear so!
Targeted.
Now when you get as big as Russ, they may come after you too.
Which do you like better Odin 2 mini or Retroid pocket 5 mini? I have an Odin 2 mini and I love it!
Best reviewer out there - no contest.
This is a food review thanks! I don't know why no one show ps vita emulation
Thanks for sharing, Joey. How is the battery life? With a 4000 mAh battery, how many hours can you game for, for the different systems? Can you please do a battery test and report the findings, as I feel that this a significant factor to many people. Thanks!
I like what Retroid is doing but for me the screen is just too small for my old ass eyes. I rather buy the RP5 honestly
I love this review so much and I love the device a lot... Which made me want to buy the upcoming RP5 even more :D I will take the larger screen over portability!
have a nice day
In every review I see you smiling. In fact, it's rare that you don't smile. By the way, how do you combine being nerd and having a lot of tattoos on your body?
Great review! Have you tried Pokemon sword or shield on this? Mainly only want to pay this and a few other switch games on this.
Is the fire dungeon in Zelda WW laggy ? Are there sone tweaks we should know about to enjoy WW fully with munimum issues ? Can't wait to receive mine ☺️ thanks for the review !!
I specifically went for the Mini to replace my RP2S
I bought my RP2S after your review, 3 people want to buy it, and I think I'm going to keep it and tuck it away, just in case.
Fan noise is deal breaker for me, I love quiet machines.
Guess I'm gonna stay tuned!
No, I wouldn't say so, the SD8Gen 2 is pretty far ahead still.
The problem is that AYN don't send anymore to Mexico...
Which custom drivers did you use? Yuzu android 10 or current?
A10 with the recommended ones in that Github.
Probably latest turnip drivers and a A10 yuzu fork
@@JoeysRetroHandhelds thank you my good man!
whats wrong with the retroid 4+?
I was gonna hold off until I saw how Linux was on this, but I think I'll just bite the bullet.
Everything about the RP Mini is my endgame Retro HH.
I personally can't use handled consoles under 7 inch 😄
This is why I love my steam deck oled for emulation. But this little beautiful handled is great for trips because of the small size.😃
Do you just frame the edges of the peg boards with lights or do you put some lights in the middle too?
Just frame!
Joey, do you think they will release a metal version of this one ?
When i watched your rp2s metal video i fell in love with it but now i am wondering if a rpmini metal will come out. On the other side the rp2s metal is $120 now so do you think the extra cost worth the performance increase?
I don't think they're going to continue doing metal versions unfortunately, I don't believe they sold well.
