- In this video, we'll take a look at a piece of vintage Heathkit test equipment, the IT-5283 Signal Tracer. I'll discuss the history and features of this instrument, and we'll look at the front panel controls and inside circuitry. I'll cover the restoration of the unit, and say something about the circuit design it used. We'll see a demonstration of the instrument in operation, and then wrap things up with a summary.

Hey, an example of review ! Congratulations 73
Good stuff, valuable to have a knowledgeable individual review vintage equipment in a clear and concise fashion.
Another excellent video.
You now have the whole set.
Congratulations!
Informative and very well done! Thank You!
Very well done video. Thank You.
Well done!
Great stuff.
Can you do a video using it to troubleshoot a receiver?
In several videos you mention buying equipment on KAGG. I cannot find this site; do you have the URL and if so will you please share it? Thanks.
I’ve got one of these on eBay recently. Seems to be in perfect order, but how can I test the probe on rf mode? I have a rf generator with internal mod. When I touch the output with the probe (ground on ground and tip on central spot) I can hear the note in dc mode and in rf mode either.
When you use the signal tracer for RF signal tracing, turn the probe switch to the RF position and the function switch to the signal tracer position. You may still hear some demodulated output in the DC mode as well if the gain is high enough. Mine didn't come with the actual probe, so I borrowed one from a Heathkit VTVM.
I have this signal tracer, but haven't used it in years. I bought & built them in the late 70's I believe. I lost the manuals and the RF probe when we moved, what value was the capacitor & diode for the RF probe?
It has a 1000 pF capacitor and 1N4149 diode in series.
Thanks!
It looks like I will have to make me the probes is there a value for the diode?Thank you very informative video I also have this signal tracer.
@@jefftranter how do I use the signal tracer to find out what caused a channel to go out in a receiver?
Thank you
@@SDsailor7 Google for "signal tracing" and you should find some articles and videos that will help you.
Jeff, this is a question regarding the IT-12 signal tracer but I was hoping you could help under this video. Do you know replacement pot details (Mouser etc) that can be used for the level control in the IT-12 Signal Tracer that would allow proper fitment?
You want a Potentiometer, 100K, linear taper, solder lugs.
You likely won't find one with exactly the same shaft type, but it is not critical.
This one would be suitable, for example: mou.sr/4aucJ5J
Jeff, as always, thanks for the feedback!!!😁
Where can I get a resistance decade box like the one at 7:54?
