  • Hello folks,
I made this video because there was alot of questions as to the drivabilty and current state of this vehicle. This video was taken today 10/29/2013. As you can see I was wrong about the last registered date as the sticker shows 2005 not 2009. This was the first start in over a month, as you can tell by the little puff of smoke and the hard start. Notice that the odometer is correct and works as it should. First drive down the road was a little slow to ensure everything was still in working order. Second time I got on it coming out the parking lot, notice the button change into high performance range. This is why you couldn't hear the shift. The buzzing noise was the curb finder (little piece of wire that makes a horrible noise when it touch's anything), It was bent, after a little tweaking so it didn't rub the ground, it was good to go. When checking the windows I remember that the drivers side rear button was broken. There is a brand new one in the trunk. Any other questions. Please ask

That is far more than a fantastic old car. That is art on wheels.

My brother still has my dads 58 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser. It has the 430 cubic inch Super Marauder engine. 3-2 barrel carburetors. The car sounds like a freight train when idle. Very deep lope. It has to have a electric fuel pump to feed those carburetors. Great car.

This is from a very special era in car production. From about 1957 to 1962 cars had this exaggerated style that is so interesting that it gives those cars enormous character through time. I would love to see it again, but of course, this represents the the beliefs and values generally held by the citizens of the US at that time. The word that comes to mind is innocence.

@@dovic2293 advancements in vehicle safety and increasing government regulations around vehicle safety systems are why everything seems to look bland.
In 20 or 30 years time we'll probably wax nostalgic about how our 2010 camry or malibu was such a nice looking car compared to the sameness of these 2050 model 15 teslas etc. etc.

I went on my first date in 1961 with a 1957 red and white version with gold trim on the side with wheel skirts. My dad's car. Thanks for the memories.

My father brought one when new in late '57. The push button transmission gave him nothing but trouble. It spent more time in the dealers garage than our drive way and my father (who was a L-M only buyer for years) hated it. Traded it in a new Chevy in 1960.

Mercury had its own identity in 1957 thru 60. Then went back to the Ford shell and chassis, and stayed there till the end.

love that speedo guage. love the way it flutates. the coolest one iv seen is on a 57-58 dodges cars and wagons. they operate similar to your merc, except they and in increments, and kinda roll up per every 5 milse per hour, instead of make one long red strip like yours does. also, if you never saw the 58 edsel ranger spedo, you have to see it. the needle stays in place, while the guage spins , and it kinda looks like a hlaf of a flying saucer too me. anyway, awesome ride!

Love the vents at the tops of the A-pillars and the Breezeway window. Too bad these were biodegradable cars -- lost 23 pounds to rust every time it rained until they disappeared completely.

This is my dad's very first car he drove when he was stationed in the US in 1967, even the same color! I saw an old picture he kept of it and have been trying to find a model car, poster or magazine feature of it ever since. Does anyone here know where to find a model car of it? I googled a lot but came up empty handed. Grateful for any tips!

Love that dash arrangement. Got to be wicked gas eater but who cares when you have old cars. Know of a 2 door in my area but the engines of these cost up to $10,000 to rebuild so may have to pass

Who cared about gasoline prices back then when the price per gallon was 15 cents! I even remember seeing signs out front of filling stations that read "gas war".

Thats when Detroit made cars for people and what WE wanted and didnt shive the soulless shite they throw at us today. Im very serious cars then were literally artwork and made with pride in workmanship. Today one needs to have an degree in computer design just to operate the damn thing. NO , not I. Ill stay with my 20yr Mustang and 70s Lincolns, Olds 98 regency etc. Sounding like an old man here?? Oh yeah I AM AN 53 YR OLD MAN. Whom owns real cars thank you great vid

430 MEL, also there was a 400 hp version of this engine, the first 400 hp american car ever. Very impressive for 1958. Those could do around 140 mph, but you would need balls of steel, suspension is jelly and brakes are slow but steady.
