My number 4 cylinder misfire is due to oil getting into my spark plug tubes...it's getting soaked in cylinder 2 and 4 it would be a great summer fix but it's cold in the Northeast so I'm taking it to a shop....
After just going through this and the issue NOT being coils, ECU, PCM, coil connector or wiring, vacuum leak etc. I found that is was a broken spark plug. I'm sure I did this either during installation or when I was trouble shooting. ALWAYS, ALWAYS check the spark plug! Mine was cracked! $5-$10 fix. It was throwing up codes for cylinder 4 misfire and cylinder one misfire, when this cracked plug was on cylinder one. Have not figured that part of it out yet.
The reason why it was throwing codes for #1 and #4 cylinder misfire eventhough the bad spark plug was in cylinder #1 is because this is a "waste spark" type ignition system. The spark for both #1 & #4 cylinders is provided by the same coil, so both #1 & #4 spark plugs create a spark when #1 is on the compression stroke and vice versa. When #1 is on the compression stroke, #4 is on the exhaust stroke so although #4 sparks, it doesn't have an air/fuel mixture to ignite. Cylinders #1 & #4 share the same feedback to the ECM so that's why you get codes for both. Hope this helps.
@@bernardocisneros4402 Awesome information!! I ended up replacing the intake manifold gasket after my original post. It has not thrown a misfire code since. Thanks again!
if you only have 1 cylinder misfire code, can it still be the coil pack that handles 2 cylinders on the 98 Tacoma...Ive replaces the plugs and wires so far but still the engine still falls into a misfire situation every couple days.. sometimes for a couple minutes, then snaps back to running fine...Thoughts??? Thanks
If you already replaced plugs and plug wires, then I would replace the coil. That should fix it assuming problem cylinder has good compression and fuel injector is working properly.
If my engine was misfiring, replacing a coil wouldn't be my first option. Getting a misfire code on let's say both #1 & #4 cylinders doesn't necessarily mean their coil is faulty. It could be one of the plugs or one of the wires that's failing. Camry's 1997 through 2001 use a "waste spark" type of ignition system. This means that both cylinders on a coil get a spark regardless of which one is on the compression stroke. Also the 2 cylinders on a coil share the same feedback path to the ECM. This path can't differentiate which cylender misfired so if only #1 is misfiring, the computer will throw codes for #1 & #4. I would first rule out spark plugs and plug wires. Plugs and wires are easier to remove and cheaper to replace. I would first remove the spark plugs from #1 & #4 and put them in #2 & #3. Put plugs from #2 & #3 into #1& #4. If you still get the same cylinders misfiring then check resistance on plug wires and replace them if out of spec or just replace them if you don't want to check resistance. If after replacing wires, the same cylinders are still misfiring, then check to make sure coil is getting power, ground, and signal from ECM signaling it to fire. If all is good there, then replace the coil. More than likely it's the coil, so if you don't know how to check if coil is getting power, ground, or signal, then just replace coil. If replacing coil doesn't fix it, then it's a problem with power, ground, and/or signal from ECM. All this is assuming you have good compression and fuel injectors are working properly in cylinders that are misfiring. I hope it helps
Hello sir .i have problem , #3 & #2 no spark. But if i swap the two coil cables then #3 will spark and #4 #1 wont spark. Any advice please .thank you....
@@skarsdhark4846If when you say that you swap the 2 coil cables, you mean you swap the 2 spark plug wires from 2 & 3 to #1 & #4 and now you no longer have spark on 1 & 4 but now you have spark on 2 & 3, then that means the spark plug wires are bad. Buy and install new spark plug wires. The spark plugs should be replaced with new ones also because sometimes wires and coils fail because of old spark plugs.

The one reason I watched this video is to find out how the hell you get the rear 1 off as the bolts are facing the firewall and its VERY tight back there. And of course it's the one thing you don't show. Awesome.
10 mm shallow socket, 1/4 inch drive ratchet with 6 inch extension. Takes about 5 minutes to take both bolts off and you don't have to remove anything to get to them.

I will call bullshit on removing it in 30 seconds. Especially if it's the first coil pack. Why? the bottom 10 mm bolt is tucked behind the thermostat housing. There is no clear shot at it. You have to remove the thermostat housing and pop off the hose.
JamieJones TheCarMan All I’m saying is what made you think it was the coil. What if it was a fuel pump and you replaced it without doing a fuel pressure test? The problem of today is we have a lot of folks changing parts without the appropriate diagnosis and or testing procedures.
So how did you gain access to and remove the bolts on the BACK coil?
I had a very intermittent P0354 #4 cylinder misfire. It was fixed by replacing a very dry and worn out intake manifold gasket. $20.00
